Covering by the period from the 1980s to the present, it is organized around the notions of text, context and metatext, meaning poetry, its socio-political and cultural surroundings, and critical discourse in . Authors and issues studied include Han Dong, L Haizi, Xi Chuan, Yu Jian, Sun Wenbo, Yang Lian, Wang Jiaxin, Bei Dao, Yin Lichuan, Shen Haobo and Yan Jun, and everything from the subtleties of poetic rhythm to exile-bashing in domestic media. This book has room for all that poetry is: cultural herit- age, symbolic capital, intellectual endeavor, social commentary, emotional expression, music and the materiality of language – art, in a word. Maghiel van Crevel (PhD in Chinese Literature: Leiden, 1996) lectured at the University of Sydney (1996-1999) and is currently Professor of Chinese Language & Literature at Leiden University. His publications include Language Shattered: Contemporary Chinese Poetry and Duoduo (CNWS, 1996). et al. et ‘This monograph fully confi rms Maghiel van Crevel’s status as the world’s leading expert on contemporary Chinese poetry. Bei Dao’s poetry is composed in what he calls the “translation style,” a poetic form that originated with translation work done in underground literary circles in Beijing during the Cultural Revolution. The gap in scholarship regarding analysis of this integral aspect of Bei Dao’s poetics has led to critique of the translation style without acknowledging its origins and features. In order to effectively analyze Bei Dao’s poetry, an understanding of the translation style and its features is necessary. In this thesis I propose to define the translation style and categorize it into four manifestations: abrasion, dislocation, immunization, and inflammation. These manifestations are indicative of the consequences of and the methods of resistance to the restrictions imposed on language during the Cultural Revolution. I use close readings of five poems and categorize them by these four manifestations to examine the poetic performance of the translation style in Bei Dao’s work.

In 2004, Zhang Xide, a former county-level Communist Party boss, sued the authors of a best selling book, An Investigation into China's Peasants. The book exposed official malfeasance on Zhang's watch and the resultant peasant hardships. Zhang demanded an apology from the book's authors and publisher, excision of the offending chapter, 200,000 yuan (approximately U.S.$25,000)' for emotional damages, and a share of profits from sales of the book.
