Maghiel van Crevel Mayhem and Money E S Van Crevel · Crevel Van dited by dited Chinese Poetry in Times of Mind, Mayhem and Money is a ground- – breaking contribution to scholarship, well-suited to classroom use in that it combines rigorous analysis with a lively style. Covering by the period from the 1980s to the present, it is organized around the notions of text, context and metatext, meaning poetry, its socio-political and cultural surroundings, and critical discourse in . Maghiel van Crevel ChineseTimes Poetry Mayhemof Mind, and in Money the broadest sense. Authors and issues studied include Han Dong, L Haizi, Xi Chuan, Yu Jian, Sun Wenbo, Yang Lian, Wang Jiaxin, Bei Dao, Yin Lichuan, Shen Haobo and Yan Jun, and everything from the subtleties of poetic rhythm to exile-bashing in domestic media. This book has room for all that poetry is: cultural herit- age, symbolic capital, intellectual endeavor, social commentary, emotional expression, music and the materiality of language – art, in a word. Maghiel van Crevel (PhD in Chinese Literature: Leiden, 1996) lectured at the University of Sydney (1996-1999) and is currently Professor of Chinese Language & Literature at Leiden University. His publications include Language Shattered: Contemporary Chinese Poetry and Duoduo (CNWS, 1996). et al. et ‘This monograph fully confi rms Maghiel van Crevel’s status as the world’s leading expert on contemporary Chinese poetry. His extremely meticulous documentation, his unbiased approach to a wide range of poets and poems, his terminological consistency and theoretical originality all combine to make this book outclass anything written previously on this topic, whether by western scholars or by Chinese scholars.’ Michel Hockx, Professor of Chinese, SOAS, University of London ---- This book is volume in the series - Maghiel van Crevel - 978-90-47-44273-8 www.brill.nl/sinl Downloaded from Brill.com08/10/2019 11:29:17AM via free access B_BRILL003-8 SINL 86_Van Crevel.indd 1 19-08-2008 16:30:27 Maghiel van Crevel - 978-90-47-44273-8 Downloaded from Brill.com08/10/2019 11:29:17AM via free access Chinese Poetry in Times of Mind, Mayhem and Money Conn Te Ts ConTenTs v PReFACe ix ACknowledgMenTs xi ConvenTions xiii lisT oF illusTRATions xvii ChAPTeR one 1 AvAnT-gARde PoeTRy FRoM ChinA: TexT, ConTexT And MeTATexT 1 1. For additional resources on East Asia, contact Sarah Arehart, Outreach Coordinator, University of Chicago Center for East Asian Studies, at [email protected] Afghanistan A. Read Nadia Anjuman’s “The Silenced” from Language for a New Century: Contemporary Poetry from Asia, the Middle East & Beyond (W.W. Norton & Co.): “The Silenced” by Nadia Anjuman I have no desire for talking, my tongue is tied up. Now that I am abhorred by my time, do I sing or not? What could I say about honey, when my mouth is as bitter as poison. Alas! The group of tyrants have muffled my mouth. This corner of imprisonment, grief, failure and regrets— I was born for nothing that my mouth should stay sealed. I know O! my heart, It is springtime and the time for joy. What could I, a bound bird, do without flight. Although, I have been silent for long, I have not forgotten to sing, Because my songs whispered in the solitude of my heart. Oh, I will love the day when I break out of this cage, Escape this solitary exile and sing wildly. I am not that weak willow twisted by every breeze. I am an Afghan girl and known to the whole world.

翻译文体的问题: THE MANIFESTATION OF THE TRANSLATION STYLE IN BEI DAO’S POETICS by Erin Heather Deitzel Honors Thesis Appalachian State University Submitted to the Department of English and The Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts May, 2019 Approved by: Germán Campos-Muñoz, Ph.D, Thesis Director Başak Çandar, Ph.D, Reader Xiaofei Tu, Ph.D, Reader Jennifer Wilson, Ph.D, Departmental Honors Director Jefford Vahlbusch, Ph.D., Dean, The Honors College Deitzel 1 Abstract: Bei Dao, a 20th century Chinese poet, occupies a unique place in the context of contemporary Chinese poetry as a representative of the Misty poetry movement from the 1970s and 80s. Bei Dao’s poetry is composed in what he calls the “translation style,” a poetic form that originated with translation work done in underground literary circles in Beijing during the Cultural Revolution. The gap in scholarship regarding analysis of this integral aspect of Bei Dao’s poetics has led to critique of the translation style without acknowledging its origins and features. In order to effectively analyze Bei Dao’s poetry, an understanding of the translation style and its features is necessary. In this thesis I propose to define the translation style and categorize it into four manifestations: abrasion, dislocation, immunization, and inflammation. These manifestations are indicative of the consequences of and the methods of resistance to the restrictions imposed on language during the Cultural Revolution. I use close readings of five poems and categorize them by these four manifestations to examine the poetic performance of the translation style in Bei Dao’s work.

VOLUME 47, NUMBER 1, WINTER 2006 Innovation Through Intimidation: An Empirical Account of Defamation Litigation in China Benjamin L. Liebman* INTRODUCTION Consider two recent defamation cases in Chinese courts. In 2004, Zhang Xide, a former county-level Communist Party boss, sued the authors of a best selling book, An Investigation into China's Peasants. The book exposed official malfeasance on Zhang's watch and the resultant peasant hardships. Zhang demanded an apology from the book's authors and publisher, excision of the offending chapter, 200,000 yuan (approximately U.S.$25,000)' for emotional damages, and a share of profits from sales of the book. Zhang sued 2 in a local court on which, not coincidentally, his son sat as a judge. * Associate Professor of Law and Director, Center for Chinese Legal Studies, Columbia Law School.
