Intensive instruction was relieved by entertainment in the evenings and by day excursions to places of scenic or historical interest. We had scheduled a trip up Mount Snowdon on a particular Wednesday, but on the Tuesday evening it rained heav- ily. Around 10 o’clock that night, during the after-dinner dancing, a dozen or so Finns approached me and suggested that we cancel the excursion, as it would be no fun climbing the muddy slopes of Snowdon in heavy rain. I, of course, agreed and announced the cancellation. Immediately I was surrounded by protesting Italians disputing the decision. Why cancel the trip—they had been looking forward to it (escape from lessons), they had paid for it in their all-inclusive fee, a little rain would not hurt anyone and what was the matter with the Finns anyway—weren’t they supposed to be tough people? A little embarrassed, I consulted the Japanese contingent. They were very, very nice. If the Italians wanted to go, they would go, too. If, on the other hand, we cancelled the trip they would be quite happy to stay in and take more lessons. The Italians jeered at the Finns, the Finns mumbled and scowled, and eventually, in order not to lose face, agreed they would go. The excursion was declared on. It rained torrentially all night and also while I took a quick breakfast. The bus was scheduled to leave at half past eight, and at twenty-five past, taking my umbrella in the downpour, I ran to the vehicle. Inside were 18 scowling Finns, 12 smiling Japanese, and no Italians. We left on time and had a terrible day. The rain never let up, we lunched in cloud at the summit, and returned covered in mud at 5 o’clock, in time to see the Italians taking tea and # bli d f li 31573 01 i-xxiv 1-176 r13rm 8/18/05 2:56 PM Page xvi xvi WHEN CULTURES COLLIDE chocolate biscuits. They had sensibly stayed in bed. When the Finns asked them why, they said because it was raining... Getting to Grips with Cultural Diversity Cultural diversity is not something that is going to go away tomorrow, enabling us to plan our strategies on the assumption of mutual understanding.

    Representations of Rural England in Contemporary Folk Song

    Representations of Rural England in Contemporary Folk Song Heather Skinner Institute of Place Management, UK [email protected] Purpose: This paper explores aural representations of the countryside and English rurality through the contemporary cultural product of folk song. Methodology: A textual analysis was undertaken of the sleeve notes and lyrics of Steve Knightley, songwriter and founder member of the folk/roots band Show of Hands. Findings: The concept of the rural idyll is thoroughly debunked in the majority of these lyrics. Many songs make specific reference to place, and these, in the main, focus on the historical and contemporary hardships of living in rural England, in many cases also making explicit reference to the historical or contemporary social issues deemed by the lyricist to be at the root of the problems faced by people living in English rural communities. Research limitations: This article analyses data obtained in lyrics of only one songwriter within only one music genre, but the artist is one of the most respected within the contemporary folk genre, and Show of Hands have won a number of prestigious nationally recognised folk awards. Originality/value: The extant literature contains little concerning aural representations of place identities through song. The contribution this paper makes is therefore in presenting a conceptual framework that shows how folk song, as a contemporary cultural product contributes to the construction and communication of rural place identities. To assist in the detection of spurious and the correction of inaccu- rate pedigrees, is one of the purposes of the present publication, in which respect the first Volume has been of acknowledged utility. The two together, it is hoped, will form a comprehensive and tole- rably correct Register of Pedigrees. It will be observed that some of the Mares which appeared in the last Supplement (whereof this is a republication and continua- tion) stand as they did there, i. e. without any additions to their produce since 1813 or 1814. — It has been ascertained that several of them were about that time sold by public auction, and as all attempts to trace them have failed, the probability is that they have either been converted to some other use, or been sent abroad. If any proof were wanting of the superiority of the English breed of horses over that of every other country, it might be found in the avidity with which they are sought by Foreigners. The exportation of them to Russia, France, Germany, etc. for the last five years has been so considerable, as to render it an object of some importance in a commercial point of view.

    Department of Law Spring Term 2015 Master’s Thesis in International Law 30 ECTS Statelessness and Nationality The Case of Non-Citizens in Latvia Author: Maria Hellborg Supervisor: Professor Inger Österdahl Summary Following its restoration as an independent state in the 1990s, the new Republic of Latvia inherited a significant population of former citizens of the Soviet Union who resided legally in the country, but were not given Latvian citizenship. The situation of these "non-citizens" of Latvia remains an unresolved issue, which has bearing on international law by its close connection to the concepts of nationality and statelessness. The issue also holds importance because of its implications for Latvia as a country, and for its consequences in relation to regional stability. From a perspective of contemporary international law this thesis will examine whether the non-citizens of Latvia are to be considered as constituting stateless individuals. The thesis will also address the question of whether the Latvian non-citizens are, through their legal status, limited in their access to human rights. Finally the thesis will discuss how the issue of non- citizens affects regional stability through the Latvia-Russia relationship.
