APPEARANCES OF HORROR HOSTS AND HOSTESSES IN MAGAZINES Article by Jim Knusch Zach postage stamp by Jim Mattern Premier admat of SHOCK! in TV Guide In the 'golden age' the late 1950s and early 1960s of monster fandom a lot was happening. A generation weaned on television and made fearful of the evils of communism and the reality of nuclear war was coming of age. That is, they were into their teens. Both the USA and Great Britain began to resurrect (in more ways than one) and breathe a new life into many of these classic monsters in updated productions for the big screen. These new offerings were embellished with color and gore. Life magazine of Nov 11, 1957 featured a two page spread promoting new and upcoming horror and scifi releases from AmericanInternational Pictures. Big screen horror and monsters were in. Vintage horror movies, especially of the 1930s, were finding a welcome audience on the tube. This acceptance was so strong that it led to a repackaging of select titles being syndicated and offered weekly under the title of SHOCK! The SHOCK! TV package was seen in some areas as SHOCK THEATRE, NIGHTMARE and HOUSE OF HORROR. As was suggested by the SHOCK! promo book, some of these were hosted locally by bizarre personalities. These personalities in themselves became phenomenally popular. This was evidenced by major pictorial articles in national magazines, hundreds of fan clubs, the marketing of premiums andmost importantlyhigh TV ratings. To the teenage fan caught up in all of this a trip to the local newsstand would result in the purchase of a comic book, a humor magazine or an occasional 'Tales of the Crypt' type of periodical that was somewhere in between a comic book and pulp magazine. -

October 2013 Office of Facilities Engineering and Operations October 2013 Arts and Industries Building Revitalization Phase 1 - Shell Mission/Scope: On May 5, 2008, the Board of Regents decided not to pursue a public private partnership and to seek other resources in order to fund the revitalization of the Arts & Industries Building. The project will comprise three phases: the Shell, the Interior, and the Program. While the program is being developed, work on the Shell has moved forward –the replacement of the roof exceeding 10,000 M2 and more than 800 windows and structural improvements to address snow, wind, seismic and blast loads is under construction. The cost of the Shell improvements is approximately $50M. The 2009 American Recovery & Reinvestment Act funded $5.1M of additional masonry repairs and interior demolition and hazmat removal. John Zacherle, One of the First of the Late-Night Television Horror-Movie
OBITUARIES 10/29/2016 By WILLIAM GRIMES John Zacherle as the playfully spooky Zacherley in the 1950s. Louis Nemeth John Zacherle, one of the first of the late-night television horror-movie hosts, who played a crypt-dwelling undertaker with a booming graveyard laugh on stations in Philadelphia and New York in the late 1950s and early ’60s, died on Thursday at his home in Manhattan. He was 98. His death was announced by friends and a fan website. Mr. Zacherle, billed as Zacherley in New York, was not the first horror host — that honor goes to Maila Nurmi, the Finnish-born actress who began camping it up as Vampira on KABC-TV in Los Angeles in 1954 — but he was the most famous, inspiring a host of imitators at local stations around the country. As Roland in Philadelphia (pronounced ro-LAHND) and Zacherley in New York, he added grisly theatrics and absurdist humor to the entertainment on offer, which more often than not was less than Oscar quality. He became a cult figure, making star appearances at horror conventions across the Northeast. Dressed in a long black frock coat decorated with a large medal from the government of Transylvania, Roland introduced, and interrupted, the evening’s film with comic bits involving characters who existed only as props in his crypt-cum-laboratory. The transport of sand and dust by wind is a potent erosional force, creates sand dunes and ripples, and loads the atmosphere with suspended dust aerosols. This article presents an extensive review of the physics of wind-blown sand and dust on Earth and Mars. Specifically, we review the physics of aeolian saltation, the formation and development of sand dunes and ripples, the physics of dust aerosol emission, the weather phenomena that trigger dust storms, and the lifting of dust by dust devils and other small- scale vortices. We also discuss the physics of wind-blown sand and dune formation on Venus and Titan. INVISIBLE CITY Philadelphia and the Vernacular Avant-garde Invisible City: Philadelphia and the Vernacular Avant-garde NOTES ON THE UNDERGROUND 252 Sid Sachs 253 Invisible City: Philadelphia and the Vernacular Avant-garde Notes on the Underground Sid Sachs In the mid-twentieth century, Philadelphia was a publishing center, its populism epito- mized by Curtis Publishing Company’s The Saturday Evening Post and Ladies Home Journal and Walter Annenberg’s TV Guide and Seventeen. The everyday American worldview—the Norman Rockwell and N.C. Wyeth versions of America—originated from these publishers. These were not aristocratic visions but, rather, the iconography of popular culture (as defined by sociologist Herbert Gans).1 In addition to Annenberg’s Triangle Publications and Curtis, Philadelphia was home to J.B. Lippincott, smaller specialty publishers such as Chilton and Cypher Press, and many others.2 Over these years, Philadelphia culture produced artifacts variously affiliated with the Beat writers, pulp fiction, experimental poetry, popular music, and a proto-punk ethos. Indeed, Philadelphia encompassed many worlds, from the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania and its elite Quaker satellite schools to Philip Barry’s patrician Tracey Lords; it brooked an even darker proletarian underworld. David Lynch noticed this chthonic condition during his Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) years in the late 1960s and Sun Ra decried the city, saying, “To save the planet, I had to go to the worst spot on Earth, and that was Philadelphia, which is death’s headquarters.”3 That sinister underbelly was best illustrated by David Goodis, an important pulp-fiction writer. -
