The current version is prepared for CBS News. As with the original, the goal here is to provide useful information on U.S. and Russian space flights so reporters and producers will not be forced to rely on government or industry public affairs officers at times when it might be difficult to get timely responses. All of these data are available elsewhere, of course, but not necessarily in one place. The STS-132 version of the CBS News Space Reporter's Handbook was compiled from NASA news releases, JSC flight plans, the Shuttle Flight Data and In-Flight Anomaly List, NASA Public Affairs and the Flight Dynamics office (abort boundaries) at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Sections of NASA's STS-132 press kit, crew bios and the mission TV schedule are downloaded via the Internet, formatted and included in this document. Word-for-word passages (other than lists) are clearly indicated. The SRH is a work in progress and while every effort is made to insure accuracy, errors are inevitable in a document of this nature and readers should double check critical data before publication. CBS News Space Reporter's Handbook - Mission Supplement NASA Media Information NASA Television Transmission NASA Television is now carried on an MPEG-2 digital signal accessed via satellite AMC-6, at 72 degrees west longitude, transponder 17C, 4040 MHz, vertical polarization. A Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) - compliant Integrated Receiver Decoder (IRD) with modulation of QPSK/DBV, data rate of 36.86 and FEC 3/4 is needed for reception. NASA TV Multichannel Broadcast includes: Public Services Channel (Channel 101); the Education Channel (Channel 102) and the Media Services Channel (Channel 103). The new Digital NASA TV will have four digital channels: 1. NASA Public Service ("Free to Air"), featuring documentaries, archival programming, and coverage of NASA missions and events; 2. NASA Education Services ("Free to Air/Addressable"), dedicated to providing educational programming to schools, educational institutions and museums; 3. NASA Media Services ("Addressable"), for broadcast news organizations; and 4. NASA Mission Operations (Internal Only) The new digital NASA Public Service Channel will be streamed on the Web. All you'll need is access to a computer. You may want to check with your local cable or satellite service provider whether it plans to continue carrying the NASA Public Service "Free to Air" Channel. If your C-Band-sized satellite dish is capable of receiving digital television signals, you'll still need a Digital Video Broadcast (DVB)-compliant MPEG-2 Integrated Receiver Decoder, or IRD, to get the new Digital NASA's Public Service "Free to Air" Channel. An IRD that receives "Free to Air" programming like the new Digital NASA Public Service Channel can be purchased from many sources, including "off-the-shelf" at your local electronics store. The new Digital NASA TV will be on the same satellite (AMC 6) as current analog NASA TV, but on a different transponder (17). In Alaska and Hawaii, we'll be on AMC 7, Transponder 18. The STS-123 and Expedition 16 crews will bid one another farewell, and the hatches between the two spacecraft will close at 5:13 p.m. EDT. Endeavour is scheduled to undock from the International Space Station at 7:56 p.m., ending its 12-day stay at the orbital outpost. STS-123 arrived at the station March 12, delivering the Japanese Logistics Module - Pressurized Section, the first pressurized component of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Kibo laboratory, to the station. The crew of Endeavour also delivered the final element of the station’s Mobile Servicing System, the Canadian-built Dextre, also known as the Special Purpose Dextrous Manipulator.     0106C Christa McAuliffe 10/26/05 10:43 PM Page 40 Christa McAuliffe, Teacher Astronaut S ONE OF her training exercises in becoming the first teacher astronaut, A Christa McAuliffe had to curl up inside a 36-inch-diameter nylon ball. When she was zipped up, she found herself in total darkness. She didn’t know when she’d be let out. Christa wore electrodes and transmitters to see how she would react to being closed in, since on the space shuttle she’d have to share a living space that measured only 10 by 13 feet (the size of her kitchen) with six people, and she and the other astronauts would eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, work, and relax there; it was no place for someone with claustrophobia. Christa thought she would start yelling and try to claw her way out, but she lay back, folded her arms across her stomach, and imagined herself floating in space. As Christa McAuliffe a result, the 15 minutes she spent inside the nylon ball were very peaceful. At the end of the exercise, she asked if she could take the ball home. “When things start to get crazy, I can just set the timer and tell the kids, ‘O.K., Mom’s going into the sphere now.’” Christa, a high-school social studies teacher from New Hampshire, first heard about the teacher astronaut program on the radio while driving with her husband, Steve. The smile that lit Christa’s face told Steve she was interested. “Go for it,” he said. When she put off filling out the Women astronauts stand with the Personal Rescue Enclosure (the rescue ball).

Though more than a score of years after the loss of Challenger’s crew, STS-118 was a reminder of the morning of January 28, 1986. That week Christa McAuliffe planned to perform both live and filmed science lessons. These lost lessons, prepared for the nation and world’s school children, were never done. This project delves into those undone educational activities. Indeed, after studying its content, all will appreciate NASA’s, Christa’s and Barbara’s efforts as well as Bob Mayfield’s in carefully researching, preparing and training for the performance of the six “Challenger lost lessons.” Though lost in the sense that they perished with Challenger and her crew, recounting, redoing, and examining them is, in a sense, a resurrection.
