It goes from the humidity of the Amazon Region, the dry heat of the Northeastern region and the permanently pleasant warm weather of most of the coastal area, to cool evening temperatures in many parts of the plateau and a temperate climate in the South. The seasons in Brazil, are the opposite way round to the Northern Hemisphere seasons of Europe and the United States. The medium annual temperature is 28°C in the North and 20°C in the South. During the months of May and June, in Rio de Janeiro, the average temperature is 25°C. VISAS & PASSPORTS: An entry visa is not required for holders of passports from European or South American countries. As a matter of reciprocity, a visa is required for those from North America. For further information about the necessary documentation and where visas can be obtained, please consult your local Brazilian embassy. Tourist visas can be renewed for a period of 180 days per year. Passports must be valid for at least six months after the planned date of arrival in Brazil. CURRENCY: The currency in Brazil is the Real (abbreviated to R$). Dollars and traveler's checks can be easily changed in hotels, authorized banks and travel agencies. International credit cards are accepted in most hotels, shops and restaurants, however always notify your bank beforbeforee you travel to avoid your card being blocked when you try to use it in Brazil.Brazil. The exchange rate fluctuates regularly. The American dollar, in the past months, has been around R$ 3,00. TIME ZONES: Brazil covers three time zones. The time in Brasilia is the official time in Brazil, usually 3 hours behind GMT (London). This changes with the start of Summer Time (the clocks go forward an hour). SHOPPING: Brazil offers a great variety of shopping: from boutiques to hippie markets; from precious and semi-precious stones, to creative handicrafts. Shopping centers are open from 10am to 10pm from Monday to Saturday and from 3pm to 9m on Sundays. LANGUAGE: The national language of Brazil is Portuguese. HEALTH: It is recommended to have the vaccination against yellow fever, for tourists that intend to visit the following Brazilian states: Acre, Amazonas, Amapa, Federal District, Goias, Maranhao, Mato Grosso do Sul, Para, Rondonia, Roraima and Tocantins. If you have recently visited a country, which is known to suffer from outbreaks of Yellow Fever, you will need to show that you have been vaccinated against the disease. TIPS: The service charge of 10% is included in the bills in most restaurants and bars. Therefore, additional tips are optional and are usually between 10% and 15% of the bill. For tour guides and drivers, tips are recommended at the client's discretion. CUISINE: The Brazilian cuisine is rich and varied with Portuguese and African influences. The most typical Brazilian dish is the "feijoada": served in big casseroles, it is a stew of black beans with beef and pork. Usually it is served with manioc flour, rice and slices of fresh orange. There is also the famous Brazilian barbecue, usually served in restaurant in a "rodizio" 2 system, where several kinds of grilled meats are brought to the tables on a skewer and cut directly on the plates of the costumers. The food from Bahia has stronger flavors. There is the famous "Vatapa": made with shrimps, fish oil, coconut milk, bread and oil. The national drink is the famous "Caipirinha": made with sugar cane alcohol called cachaca, mixed with lime, sugar and ice. AIRPORT TAXES: International and domestic airport taxes are charged. Most of the time, these taxes are already included in your air ticket. However please verify it is included before departure. CLOTHING: Light clothes and comfortable shoes are recommended. Passengers should take sun glasses, sun block with a high UV rating and swimming clothes. A jacket is recommended as many places have strong air conditioning. ELECTRICITY: The electric current in most of Brazil is 110 V. Many hotels have adaptors if necessary, although it is recommended to bring your own travel adaptors. TELEPHONES: Public telephones accept phone cards that cost around R$ 20,00 (approx. U$9,00) and can be bought at local newspaper stands. Mobile phones: The main providers of GSM 1800 technologies are: TIM Brasil, OI and Claro. The international dialling code for Brazil is 00 + 55. Emphasizing Silveira’s ongoing formal experimentation and conceptual interventions in architecture, the works on view provide an overview of site-specific installations and public art projects that were never realized in physical space. Regina Silveira: Unrealized / Não feito is the Gallery’s fifth solo presentation of Silveira’s work, and celebrates a decade since her first Gallery exhibition in 2009. A pioneering figure in Brazilian art, for over five decades Silveira has utilized surprise and illusion as methodologies for the destabilization of perspective and reality. Silveira began her career in the 1950s under the tutelage of expressionist Brazilian painter Iberê Camargo, studying lithography and woodcut, as well as painting. In the 1970s, Silveira experimented with printmaking and video, spearheading a movement of radical artistic production during a time of military repression in Brazil. Since the 1980s, Silveira has executed numerous large-scale installations in libraries, public plazas, roadways, parks, museum facades, public transit centers, and other institutional sites. The works on view in Unrealized / Não feito offer a unique glimpse into Silveira’s process and methodology and catalyze possibilities for future experimentation.

Sao Paulo, Brasil Director of Training Center: Dr Gustavo Mantovani Ruggiero Date of Scholarship: 02/02 – 30/03/2015 During two moths I had the privilege to stay in Sao Paulo Hand Center (Hospital BeneFicencia Portuguesa) in Brazil under the supervision oF Dr Gustavo Mantovani Ruggiero, Focusing mainly on Hand Surgery. São Paulo is the capital oF the state oF São Paulo, located in southeastern Brazil. The city has signiFicant cultural, economic and political inFluence both nationally and internationally. It is home to several important monuments, parks and museums such as the Latin American Memorial, the Ibirapuera Park, Museum oF Ipiranga, São Paulo Museum oF Art, and the Museum oF the Portuguese Language. The city holds high proFile events, like the São Paulo Art Biennial, the Brazilian Grand PriX, São Paulo Fashion Week and the ATP Brasil Open. Beneficência Portuguesa Hospital of São Paulo was Founded in 1859, is now considered the largest and most advanced private hospital compleX in Latin America. It consists oF two units: the Hospital of Sao Joaquim and the Hospital de Sao Jose. With a total area of 143 thousand square meters and 1,165 beds and 35 operating rooms. During this time I also had the chance to witness many shoulder, elbow and hand surgeries with the Shoulder Group of Hospital Santa Caterina (Dr José Carlos García Jr) and the Hand, Microsurgery and Replantation Group oF the Hospital das Clinicas (Dr Alvaro Baik Cho) My weekly planning was quite varied and variable depending on the surgeries of diFFerent groups.

São Paulo, São Paulo, Brasil Resumo: A brioflora está empobrecendo em muitos países e, no entanto, forma um grupo de plantas importante para a sustentabilidade da sociedade. O presente artigo trata das briófitas do parque Ibirapuera – que possui áreas com bosque heterogêneo, entre áreas onde predominam edificações, córrego e lagos –, na cidade de São Paulo. O material totaliza 688 exsicatas depositadas no Herbário Maria Eneyda Pacheco Kauffmann Fidalgo, do Instituto de Botânica, além de duplicatas, no Herbário da Prefeitura do Município de São Paulo. O parque Ibirapuera possui 63 espécies de briófitas. Muitas delas se restringem a determinadas áreas do parque, onde várias ocorrem ainda em locais únicos. A maior riqueza da brioflora nas áreas com bosque heterogêneo, em relação às áreas onde predominam as edificações, comprova que as primeiras áreas servem como refúgio para várias espécies de briófitas, no parque Ibirapuera. Esses resultados demonstram a importância que a arborização tem para a conservação da brioflora do parque, a qual – agora conhecida – pode contribuir para o monitoramento da qualidade ambiental do local. A flora de briófitas destaca-se por apresentar uma variedade e uma espécie endêmicas do Brasil, duas espécies ameaçadas de extinção, sendo uma delas citada pela primeira vez para o país.     Metro: the best way to know São Paulo There is no better option than the Metro to visit the countless tourist sites in the largest city in Brazil – and one of the largest in the world. Note: many attractions can be reached on a single metro ride. For more distant locations, metro integrated bus lines are available. Running 74.3 kilometers of rail through 64 stations, the São Paulo metro is your best bet for getting to the host of tourist and cultural attractions located throughout this sprawling metropolis. Some of these locations, including Paulista and Liberdade Avenues ("the Eastern district"), can be accessed directly by metro.
