A total of 223 individuals of C. virgatum and 6 of C. hunteri in 19 clumps were attached to the snake's body. The barnacles ranged in size from 1.4 mm (cypris larvae) to 18.2 mm in capitulum length in C. virgatum, and from 10.7 to 14.4 mm in C. hunteri. The size of the smallest gravid individuals in both species was between 10 and 11 mm. The distribution of C. virgatum on the snake was non-random both longitudinally and dorso-ventrally, with more barnacles in the posterior region and on the ventral side of the snake, respectively. The proportion of gravid individuals increased towards the tail. -

Turner Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Kenneth P. Sebens Department of Biology Predation is a strong driver of community assembly, particularly in marine systems. Rockfish and other large fishes are the dominant predators in the rocky subtidal habitats of the San Juan Archipelago in NW Washington State. Here I examine the consumptive effects of these predatory fishes, beginning with a study of rockfish diet, and following with tests of the direct influence of predation on prey species and the indirect influence on other community members. In the first chapter I conducted a study of the diet of copper rockfish. Food web models benefit from recent and local data, and in this study I compared my findings with historic diet data from the Salish Sea and other localities along the US West Coast. Additionally, non-lethal methods of diet sampling are necessary to protect depleted rockfish populations, and I successfully used gastric lavage to sample these fish. Copper rockfish from this study fed primarily on shrimp and other demersal crustaceans, and teleosts made up a very small portion of their diet. Compared to previous studies, I found much higher consumption of shrimp and much iii lower consumption of teleosts, a difference that is likely due in part to geographic or temporal differences in prey availability. -

Cypris settled predominantly on the carapace (67%), mostly on the gastric area (40%), on the left or right orbital areas (35%), on the head appendages, and on the pereiopods 1–3. Encrusting individuals were mostly small (84%); medium-sized specimens accounted for 11% and large for 5%. On the cephalothorax, most were observed in branchial (661) and orbital areas (240). Only 40–41 individuals were found on gastric and cardiac areas. Some individuals (246), mostly small (95%), were observed on the dorsal portion of somites. -

Galil Abstract: The effects of the invasive rhizocephalan parasite Heterosaccus dollfusi on the agonistic behavior of the in- vasive swimming crab Charybdis longicollis were quantitatively analyzed under standardized conditions. The behavior of uninfected male crabs contained more aggressive elements than that of uninfected females. In encounters between infected males, markedly fewer and less aggressive elements were displayed than in encounters between uninfected males, whereas in encounters between infected females, more aggressive elements were displayed than in encounters between uninfected females. It is suggested that the presence of the parasite reduces belligerence in male crabs, possi- bly to avoid injury and to enhance the life expectancy of host and parasite. Résumé : Les effets d’Heterosaccus dollfusi, un parasite rhizocéphale envahissant, sur le comportement agonistique du crabe nageur envahissant Charybdis longicollis ont été soumis à une analyse quantitative dans des conditions contrô- lées. Les crabes mâles sains montrent plus d’éléments d’un comportement agressif que les femelles saines. Les rencon- tres entre mâles infectés comptent moins d’éléments de comportement agressif et l’agressivité y est moins intense qu’au cours de rencontres entre des mâles sains. Les femelles infectées montrent plus d’éléments de comportement agressif les unes envers les autres que les femelles saines entre elles. Il apparaît donc que la présence du parasite rend les crabes mâles moins belligérants, peut-être pour éviter les blessures et pour améliorer l’espérance de vie des parasi- tes et de leurs hôtes. -

We’ve passed our working week in San Terenzo (28.5. 2006-2.6.2006) which is also part of Lerici. These two bays belong to the province of La Spezia and the region is called Liguria. There are two burgs which show the ends of Lerici. Further north of the coast is the province Cinque Terre. Some of us will visit this place in the afternoon of our last day. For us Lerici is very friendly, because of the coloured houses and the Mediterranean at- mosphere. There are some little beaches which are made by human working. The sand didn’t find his way by himself, the sand was transporting by a crane. If you look around you can see a lot of green. We like this pure na- ture. There are also a lot of nice restaurants with de- licious Italian food. The area is called the Poet’s Gulf, because of two famous poets who have lived here. -
Urchin Rocks-NW Island Transect Study 2020
The Long-term Effect of Trampling on Rocky Intertidal Zone Communities: A Comparison of Urchin Rocks and Northwest Island, WA. A Class Project for BIOL 475, Marine Invertebrates Rosario Beach Marine Laboratory, summer 2020 Dr. David Cowles and Class 1 ABSTRACT In the summer of 2020 the Rosario Beach Marine Laboratory Marine Invertebrates class studied the intertidal community of Urchin Rocks (UR), part of Deception Pass State Park. The intertidal zone at Urchin Rocks is mainly bedrock, is easily reached, and is a very popular place for visitors to enjoy seeing the intertidal life. Visits to the Location have become so intense that Deception Pass State Park has established a walking trail and docent guides in the area in order to minimize trampling of the marine life while still allowing visitors. No documentation exists for the state of the marine community before visits became common, but an analogous Location with similar substrate exists just offshore on Northwest Island (NWI). Using a belt transect divided into 1 m2 quadrats, the class quantified the algae, barnacle, and other invertebrate components of the communities at the two locations and compared them. Algal cover at both sites increased at lower tide levels but while the cover consisted of macroalgae at NWI, at Urchin Rocks the lower intertidal algae were dominated by diatom mats instead. Barnacles were abundant at both sites but at Urchin Rocks they were even more abundant but mostly of the smallest size classes. Small barnacles were especially abundant at Urchin Rocks near where the walking trail crosses the transect. Barnacles may be benefitting from areas cleared of macroalgae by trampling but in turn not be able to grow to large size at Urchin Rocks. -
