Monterey Submarine Canyon forms a deep gash beneath the waters of Monterey Bay. At the risk of beating submarine canyons to death, I’m going to try to wrap up this discussion with some final thoughts on why we have one of the world’s largest submarine canyons in our backyard. Monterey Submarine Canyon has been known for over a century, and as with other offshore drainage systems, there has been considerable speculation over the years as to why we have this huge chasm cutting across the seafloor. Most submarine canyons align with river systems, but Elkhorn Slough hardly provides an adequate onshore source for such a massive feature. We do know that prior to 1910 the Salinas River discharged six miles north of its present mouth into Elkhorn Slough, closer to the head of Monterey Submarine Canyons. But even the Salinas River is not of the scale we would expect for an offshore feature as large as the Grand Canyon. Over 50 years ago, two geologists discovered the presence of a deep buried inland canyon beneath the Santa Cruz Mountains from oil company drill holes. This combined with other geological and geophysical observations strongly suggested that this canyon was eroded by an ancient river drainage system that played a critical role in the initial formation of the Monterey Submarine Canyon. This buried canyon, named Pajaro Gorge by some, was the route that the drainage from California’s vast Central Valley followed to the ocean for million of years. -

Taranto, Taranto, Italy; cDipartimento di Biologia Animale ed Ambientale, Università di Bari, Bari, Italy (Received 17 May 2009; final version received 14 December 2009) Thirty-eight nonindigenous marine species (NIS) (macroalgae, sponges, hydrozoans, molluscs, polychaetes, crustaceans, ascidiaceans and fish), are reported from the Apulian coast of Italy. Shipping, aquaculture and migration through the Suez Canal are the main pathways of introduction of the NIS. In Apulian waters, 21% of NIS are occasional, 18% are invasive and 61% are well-established. It is highly probable that more NIS will arrive from warm-water regions, because Mediterranean waters are warming. Furthermore, some of the successful NIS must have the ability to become dormant in order to survive adverse conditions, either seasonal or during long journeys in ballast waters. The identification of NIS depends greatly on the available taxonomic expertise; hence the paucity of taxonomists hinders our knowl- edge of NIS in our seas. We propose the creation and maintenance of a network of observatories across the Mediterranean to monitor the changes that take place along its coasts. The deltaic plain (32,000 km'), through which the modern river cuts diagon ally !Fig , 1), consists of vast wetlands and waterbodies. With eleva tions ranging from sea level up to 1.5 m, it is interrupted by natural levee ridges which decrease distally until they disappear beneath the marsh surface. The downdrift chenier plain of southwest Louisiana (8,000 km') consists of marshes, large round-to-oblong lakes, and stranded, oak covered beach ridges known as cheniers (Howe et al. 1935). This landscape is the result of alternating long-term phases of shoreline accretion and erosion that were dependent upon the proximit of an active sediment-laden river, and a low-energy marine environment (Byrne et al. 1959). Since the dyking of the Mississippi River, fluvial sedimentation in the deltaic plain has effectively been halted. Today, most Missis sippi River sediment is deposited on the outer continental shelf; only at the mouth of the Atchafalaya River distributary is deltaic sedimen tation subaerially significant (Adams and Baumann 1980). Over mos of the coastal zone, subsidence, saltwater intrusion, wave erosion, canalization, and other hydrologic modification have led to a rapid increase in the surface area of water (Davis 1986, Walker e al. -

We prove the existence of large-scale gravitational phenomena of the Crotone Basin, a forearc basin located on the Ionian side of Calabria (southern Italy), by seismic, morpho-bathymetric and well data. Our study reveals that the Crotone Megalandslide started moving between Late Zanclean and Early Piacenzian and was triggered by a contractional tectonic event leading to the basin inversion. Seaward gliding of the megalandslide continued until roughly Late Gelasian, and then resumed since Middle Pleistocene with a modest rate. Interestingly, the onshore part of the basin does not show a gravity-driven deformation comparable to that observed in the marine area, and this peculiar evidence allows some speculations on the origin of the megalandslide. Kilometer- to tens of km-scale submarine gravitational collapses, here referred to as megalandslides, consist of land movements involving up to 1 km (or even more) thick sedimentary successions sliding on a basal surface that may classify as ‘basal overpressured shale detachment’ or ‘salt detachment’1. Gravity gliding may be instanta- neous, associated with mass wasting and shallow detachment, or slow, in connection with a deep detachment and long-term geological processes such as high sedimentation rates or uplif in adjacent areas1. -

Napoli", Italy ' CRdC "Innova", Department of Cultural Heritage, University of Salemo, Italy ' Independent Software Developer ABSTRACT This paper concerns about the spatial organization and the thematic management of the Poseidonia and Paestum's urban funeral areas. The wide archaeological heritage, investigated since the beginning of XIX century, had been studied using different research methodologies. These studies led to several inhomogeneous documents. First of all, we have to notice the absence of a general topographical map concerning the exact localization of each grave. In front of this scenario, the aim for the researcher consisted in the documentary source's collection and the integration in order to construct an unique cartographical base to use as a corner stone for the Paestum 's plain. This base has been realized through the acquisition of multi-temporal and multi- scalar supports. These different data have been organized within a Geographical Information System, according to the same cartographical projection system. The burial ground's geo-localisation has been realized through survey control operations, carried out by a satellite positioning system (GPS- Glonass) with subcentrimetrical resolution. The second phase of the research aimed to the database construction in order to collect analytical records, relevant to each tomb, and to link the archaeological data to the geographical entities previously created. The target was to create an informative layer, selective and comprehensive at the same time, able to process specific thematic questions, analysis of singular funerary context and comparative examination of the entire necropolis. -

We’ve passed our working week in San Terenzo (28.5. 2006-2.6.2006) which is also part of Lerici. These two bays belong to the province of La Spezia and the region is called Liguria. There are two burgs which show the ends of Lerici. Further north of the coast is the province Cinque Terre. Some of us will visit this place in the afternoon of our last day. For us Lerici is very friendly, because of the coloured houses and the Mediterranean at- mosphere. There are some little beaches which are made by human working. The sand didn’t find his way by himself, the sand was transporting by a crane. If you look around you can see a lot of green. We like this pure na- ture. There are also a lot of nice restaurants with de- licious Italian food. The area is called the Poet’s Gulf, because of two famous poets who have lived here. -

While several other physicians had, previous to Marie, spoken about this disease, starting with the Dutch physician Johann Wier (ca. 1515-1588),1 numerous representations of the human figure with characteristics of acromegaly were fashioned by an- cient Greek and Hellenistic craftsmen.
