The modifi cation at the beginning of the 17th century has given the castle the appearence it has today. The growth of the city arose from the days of the power seeking Savo- ia family. A visit here is well worthwhile to see the Industrial Museum which was the pride and joy of modernism in the last century and is still a centre of activity nowadays. There are two aspects to nineteenth century Spezia, the technological side connected to the military development in the Gulf, and the residential facet that has given rise to the development of parks and public places. The Public Gardens that lie between the via Chiodo arcades and the palmlined seafront, are symbolic of the aesthetic growth of La Spezia. The botanical gardens were fi rst designed in 1825 and are today well used by the citizenship. The Law Courts to the East of the city designed by Ignazio Gardella are a solid example of the latter style, and in front of this building, almost in contrast, a sculpture by Klein depicts man’s uncertainty. Museums certainly house most of the city’s archaeological and artistic history, but one can always be fascinated by artistic features on public buildings and chur- ches. Just such an example can be seen in the glazed terracotta by Andrea della Robbia in Santa Maria Assunta in Piazza Beverini. In Villa Marmori now the Giaco- mo Puccini Music Academy in via XX Settembre, the rooms are fl ooded with light that fi lters through brightly coloured stained glass. In the Public Gardens near the Town Hall building, stands the impressive “Winged Victory” statue by A. del San- to. In this 17th century Convento dei Paolotti, as well as a well furnished art collection, there are collections of jewellery, ivory, minia- tures, glass and sculptures. The paintings are displayed in chrono- logical order from 13th century Florence to excellent examples of 18th century views of Rome and Venice. And then, the ancient castle houses a museum that goes further back in time to preistoric and primitive eras. There are shi- ning examples from the site in Luni and fi nds from medieval times. Through the castle, the Stele Statues (carved stones that go back to 4000 B.C.) stand on guard, reminding us of distant times. Then back the Ethnographic Museum, composed at the end of the 19th century by Giovanni Podenzana, where the main focus is on countrylife. At the Palazzina delle Arti, art exibitions change throughout the year, and there is also a curious museum of seals (Museo del Sigillo) within the same building that boasts the largest collection of its kind. Onto the Technical Naval Museum where an impressive collection of fi gureheads can be admired as well as glorious reminders of naval history, and model ships that give us a clear picture of the development of navigation.

    Participatory Approach to Natural Hazard Education for Hydrological Risk Reduction Giovanna Lucia Piangiamore and Gemma Musacchio Abstract Modern Society needs interactive public discussion to provide an effective way of focusing on hydrological hazards and their consequences. Embracing a holistic Earth system Science approach, we experiment since 2004 different stimulating educational/communicative model which emotionally involves the participants to raise awareness on the social dimension of the disaster hydrogeological risk reduction, pointing out that human behavior is the crucial factor in the degree of vulnerability and the likelihood of disasters taking place. The implementation of strategies for risk mitigation must include educational aspects, as well as economical and societal ones. Education is the bridge between knowledge and understanding and the key to raise risk perception. Children’s involvement might trigger a chain reaction that reinforce and spread the culture of risk. No matter how heavy was the rain that hit our land in the past and recent seasons, we still are not prepared. If on one hand we need to fight against worsening Global Warming that trigger extreme meteorological events, we should also work on sustainable land use and promote landscape preservation. Since science can work on improving knowledge of phenomena, technology can provide modern tool to reduce the impact of disasters, children and adults education is the flywheel to provide the change. We present here two cases selected among the wide range of educational activities that we have tested and to which more than 2,000 students and adults have participated within a period of 12 years. They include learn-by-playing, hands-on, emotional-learning activities, open questions seminars, learning paths, curiosity-driven approaches, special venues and science outreach.

In the first part the concept of language, minority language, and dialect is discussed; in the second part the official position towards local or regional varieties in Europe and in Italy is considered; in the third part attitudes of speakers towards actions aimed at safeguarding their local or regional varieties are analyzed. The conclusion offers a comparison of the results of the surveys and a discussion on how things may develop in the future. We’ve passed our working week in San Terenzo (28.5. 2006-2.6.2006) which is also part of Lerici. These two bays belong to the province of La Spezia and the region is called Liguria. There are two burgs which show the ends of Lerici. Further north of the coast is the province Cinque Terre. Some of us will visit this place in the afternoon of our last day. For us Lerici is very friendly, because of the coloured houses and the Mediterranean at- mosphere. There are some little beaches which are made by human working. The sand didn’t find his way by himself, the sand was transporting by a crane. If you look around you can see a lot of green. We like this pure na- ture. There are also a lot of nice restaurants with de- licious Italian food. The area is called the Poet’s Gulf, because of two famous poets who have lived here.

    Ronzitti: Gulf of Taranto IS THE GULF OF TARANTO AN HISTORIC BAY?* Natalino Ronzitti** I. INTRODUCTION Italy's shores bordering the Ionian Sea, particularly the seg­ ment joining Cape Spartivento to Cape Santa Maria di Leuca, form a coastline which is deeply indented and cut into. The Gulf of Taranto is the major indentation along the Ionian coast. The line joining the two points of the entrance of the Gulf (Alice Point­ Cape Santa Maria di Leuca) is approximately sixty nautical miles in length. At its mid-point, the line joining Alice Point to Cape Santa Maria di Leuca is approximately sixty-three nautical miles from the innermost low-water line of the Gulf of Taranto coast. The Gulf of Taranto is a juridical bay because it meets the semi­ circular test set up by Article 7(2) of the 1958 Geneva Convention on the Territorial Sea and the Contiguous Zone. 1 Indeed, the waters embodied by the Gulf cover an area larger than that of the semi­ circle whose diameter is the line Alice Point-Cape Santa Maria di Leuca (the line joining the mouth of the Gulf). On April 26, 1977, Italy enacted a Decree causing straight baselines to be drawn along the coastline of the Italian Peninsula.2 A straight baseline, about sixty nautical miles long, was drawn along the entrance of the Gulf of Taranto between Cape Santa Maria di Leuca and Alice Point. The 1977 Decree justified the drawing of such a line by proclaiming the Gulf of Taranto an historic bay.3 The Decree, however, did not specify the grounds upon which the Gulf of Taranto was declared an historic bay.
