  • The Lowell Line 1
Assessing the Untapped Potential of the Lowell Line 1 Abstract: Lowell, MA, is a city of 108,000 residents located an hour north of Boston and near the Massachusetts/New Hampshire State Line. More than a quarter of its residents are foreign-born, including significant refugee populations. Lowell is also home to the University of Massachusetts, Lowell campus. One of Lowell’s greatest assets is its commuter rail connection to Boston. The line largely serves as a method to get workers from Lowell to Boston and back home at night. But further analysis shows nearly 50,000 jobs within one mile of a stops between Lowell and Massachusetts. Is there untapped potential to connect Lowell residents— particularly immigrant and refugee populations— with jobs along the line? Further, recent developments have restarted talks about expanding the Lowell line north into New Hampshire. This route would run right past UMass Lowell, offering the potential to add a new station that both better serves university students and staff as well as the bordering Highlands neighborhood and its significant immigrant and refugee populations. This study analyzes the possible siting of that station and its potential benefits. Assessing the Untapped Potential of the Lowell Line 2 The Lowell Line Among Lowell’s greatest transportation assets is its following precisely along the canal. This new commuter rail line to Boston, known as the Lowell rail lane, one of the first permanent railroads Line. The 25.4-mile rail line connects Lowell to in the United States, quickly proved superior North Station in Boston, as well as seven stops in to the canal, taking much of the canal’s freight between, on a 45-minute journey that runs seven business with it.2 Early on, local service was days a week.

  • Chapter 2 Existing Conditions
___________________________________________________ Interstate 495 Corridor Transportation Study 2.0 Existing Conditions 2.1 Introduction The purposes of this study are (1) to identify transportation problems along the study corridor and (2) to propose improvement projects and/or remediation strategies for those identified problems. Identified issues may be currently existing or projected for the year 2030, this study’s future year. This chapter will provide an understanding of how I-495 operates now and will identify the natural resources and socio-economic environments surrounding the roadway, ultimately enabling the reader to develop an understanding of the corridor’s environs and how transportation within the I-495 corridor and at its 25 interchanges operates. A description in this chapter of the physical and traffic operational characteristics of I-495’s interchanges is followed by a discussion on the crash history at these same locations. Additionally, this chapter looks at existing public transportation services in the area and their ridership, as well as the area’s Intelligent Transportation Systems capabilities. As there is a direct relationship between land use and transportation demands, this chapter then outlines the existing land use characteristics along the I-495 corridor, focusing on a one-mile radius at each of the corridor’s interchanges. Additionally, an examination of socio-economic conditions along the corridor and a summary of the natural resources located adjacent to I-495 are discussed. 2.2 I-495’s Diverse Roles Travel demand on the I-495 corridor is strong, which is due to the fact that the Interstate fulfills a variety of critical functions.

  • Index to the Boston & Maine Railroad (Employees
Index to the Boston & Maine Railroad (Employees’) Magazine (version 010511) ©2010 Bradford G. Blodget Introductory Notes The Boston & Maine Railroad Employees’ Magazine was a digest-sized magazine published by the railroad for 36 years beginning in April 1924 and continuing to a last issue dated April–Jun 1960. Issues were published monthly for 15 years, quarterly for 12 years and bi- monthly or in mixed frequencies for the other nine years. The least number of issues appeared in 1939 (3) and 1960 (2). Over the magazine’s life, there were 284 issues, most frequently containing 32 pages. Early in the life of the magazine, the volume numbers somehow became confounded, rendering them of limited usefulness. Thus, for greater clarity, an abbreviated month and year are used in this compilation instead of a volume and issue number to identify individual issues. For example, Aug51:2-5,18 refers to pages 2-5 and 18 in the August 1951 issue. The magazine was used quite effectively to tie the railroad family–at one time well over 20,000 people–together. The 36-year run of the magazine offers a company perspective of the railroad’s triumphs and struggles over this period. Being a company magazine it is a treasure of historical information about the Boston & Maine Railroad, albeit somewhat sanitized. One must look elsewhere to read about train wrecks, employee scandals and other company misadventures. Yet the magazine is a window into the period, showing how the railroad functioned and related to its customers and the communities it served. It reveals much about what real railroad people were doing at the railroad and in their personal lives.
