A dataset consisting of news articles written in Albanian has been constructed for this purpose. We noticed a considerable decrease of accuracy when using test documents that miss the Albanian alphabet letters “Ë” and “Ç” and created a custom training corpus that solved this problem by achieving an accuracy of more than 99%. Based on our experiments, the most performing language identification methods for Albanian use a naïve Bayes classifier and n-gram based classification features. Përmbledhje Në këtë punim shqyrtohet saktësia e disa metodave standarde dhe bashkëkohore në identifikimin e gjuhës shqipe në dokumente tekstuale. Për këtë qëllim është ndërtuar një bashkësi të dhënash testuese e cila përmban artikuj lajmesh të shkruara në shqip. Për tekstet shqipe që nuk përmbajnë gërmat “Ë” dhe “Ç” u vu re një zbritje e konsiderueshme e saktësisë së identifikimit të gjuhës. Për këtë arsye u krijua një korpus trajnues i posaçëm që e zgjidhi këtë problem duke arritur një saktësi prej më shumë se 99%. Bazuar në eksperimentet e kryera, metodat më të sakta për identifikimin e gjuhës shqipe përdorin një klasifikues “naive Bayes” dhe veçori klasifikuese të bazuara në n-grame. -

Signature 2 To the five Albanian families for opening their homes and sharing their stories with me. 3 Abstract My research explores the dialectical relationship between identity and the conceptualisation/creation of history and heritage in migration by studying a socially excluded group in Greece, that of Albanian families. Even though the Albanian community has more than twenty years of presence in the country, its stories, often invested with otherness, remain hidden in the Greek ‘mono-cultural’ landscape. In opposition to these stigmatising discourses, my study draws on movements democratising the past and calling for engagements from below by endorsing the socially constructed nature of identity and the denationalisation of memory. A nine-month fieldwork with five Albanian families took place in their domestic and neighbourhood settings in the areas of Athens and Piraeus. Based on critical ethnography, data collection was derived from participant observation, conversational interviews and participatory techniques. From an individual and family group point of view the notion of habitus led to diverse conceptions of ethnic identity, taking transnational dimensions in families’ literal and metaphorical back- and-forth movements between Greece and Albania. -

National Myths in Interdependence: The Narratives of the Ancient Past among Macedonians and Albanians in the Republic of Macedonia after 1991 By Matvey Lomonosov Submitted to Central European University Nationalism Studies Program In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts CEU eTD Collection Advisor: Professor Maria Kovács Budapest, Hungary 2012 Abstract The scholarship on national mythology primarily focuses on the construction of historical narratives within separate “nations,” and oftentimes presents the particular national ist elites as single authors and undisputable controllers of mythological versions of the past. However, the authorship and authority of the dominant national ist elites in designing particular narratives of the communal history is limited. The national past, at least in non- totalitarian societies, is widely negotiated, and its interpretation is always heteroglot . The particular narratives that come out of the dominant elites’ “think-tanks” get into a polyphonic discursive milieu discussing the past. Thus they become addressed to alternative narratives, agree with them, deny them or reinterpret them. The existence of those “other” narratives as well as the others’ authorship constitutes a specific factor in shaping mythopoeic activities of dominant political and intellectual national elites. Then, achieving personal or “national” goals by nationalists usually means doing so at the expense or in relations to the others. If in this confrontation the rivals use historical myths, the evolution of the later will depend on mutual responses. Thus national historical myths are constructed in dialogue, contain voices of the others, and have “other” “authors” from within and from without the nation in addition to “own” dominant national ist elite. -

The members of the Cultural National Clubs were determined to reach their purposes. Clubs were broad democratic organizations which consisted on intellectuals, officers of the state apparatus teachers, representatives of civil bourgeoisie, the small producers and traders of the city and the village, the landowners, the officers and the people who were associated with the Ottoman rulers. INTRODUCTION The efforts of learning the Albanian Language with a single and common Albanian alphabet for all Albanians were not separated from the war for the rising of the Albanian people through the spread of knowledge in their native language, by opening of the Albanian schools. By opening and establishing of the Albanian schools, the spread of the national education, the rising of national Albanians and the country's progress that faced to many difficulties were impossible. By the time that was prevented the spread of learning the Albanian language, the government of the Sultan, allowed the opening of the foreign schools in Albania, especially Italian and Austrian Catholic schools. At the end of the XIX century and at the beginning of XX century, Austria-Hungary established schools in some cities of Albania such as in Tirana Shkoder, Durres, Milot, etc. -

European Scientific Journal December edition vol. 7, No.26 ISSN: 1857 - 7881 (Print) e - ISSN 1857- 7431 UDC: 327.8(436:496.5)"18/19" THE UNIFICATION OF THE ALBANIAN ALPHABET AND THE ROLE OF AUSTRIA Kozeta Sala, PhD Elvira Shapllo, PhD Faculty of Education and Social Sciences, “Eqrem Cabej” University, Gjirokastra, Albania Abstract: In the second half of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX century, Austria, known as Austro-Hungary since 1867, became Albania’s most powerful and supportive ally in the in the demanding process of establishing the Albanian state, the efforts to achieve its independence as well as to protect its territorial integrity within the boundaries settled by the London Conference of Ambassadors in 1913. The attitude of Austro- Hungary towards the Albanian national issue was a logical result as well as an integral part of a consequential policy adopted by them since centuries ago. Ultimately, this attitude would help Austro-Hungary to achieve one of its objectives as a political power with definite interests in the Balkans. The Albanian policy of Austro-Hungary in the second half of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX century was a major factor, which positively influenced the developments of the time at the most significant moments for Albania and the Albanians. One of those noteworthy moments was the Austro-Hungarian support and the exceptionally positive approach to the issue of the Unification of the Albanian Alphabet. Concerning the issue of the Unification of the Albanian Alphabet, Russia together with other chauvinistic Balkan countries on one side and Austro-Hungary on the other side had two diametrically opposed attitudes. -

Introduction. A number of 18th-and 19th-century orthographies exist for Albanian; one of the more significant ones given its corpus is called Todhri ([ˈtoðri]), from the nickname of the man who devised it, Dhaskal Todhri ‘teacher Todhri’, whose name was Theodor Haxhifilipi (§1730–1805). Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to work with the late Robert Elsie on this proposal, which never benefitted from his expertise due to his untimely death. I give below here the introduction to the script from Elsie 2017: The Todhri alphabet is an original writing system that was used for Albanian in the central Albanian region of Elbasan in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It consists of 36 letters (plus nine ligatures and six rare graphemes). This script is attributed to one Dhaskal Todhri ("teacher Todhri"), whose full name was Theodor Haxhifilipi (ca. 1730-1805), and who stemmed from Elbasan. The biblical texts in this Todhri alphabet were discovered by the Austrian consul in Janina, Johann Georg von Hahn (1811-1869), who announced his finding in an article entitled Bericht über die Auffindung eines uralten albanesischen Alphabetes (Report on the Discovery of an Ancient Albanian Alphabet), submitted to the Austrian Academy of Sciences in November 1849. -

Oral Histories and the Dialectal Research in Albania
DOI: 10.17469/O2106AISV000007 DANIELA-CARMEN STOICA, ANYLA SARAÇI Oral Histories and the Dialectal Research in Albania The present article discusses the use of oral histories as a key methodological tool in lin- guistic and dialectal research in Albania, and as a crucial part of historical documentation. The article draws mainly on the empirical experience of both authors, who have performed research mainly in the Korça area, an area of complex linguistic contacts (Albanian-Slavic Macedonian-Greek). The two researchers recorded a number of oral histories in two distinct speeches; one belonging to the Tosk dialect of the Albanian language and the other belonging to the Aromanian dialect of the Romanian language. These two speeches are in danger of becoming extinct for two main reasons: the first being due to the linguistic homogenization of the Albanian dialects into the standard variant (Shkurtaj, 1999), the other being due to the cultural and linguistic assimilation of the Aromanians living in Albania (Capidan, 1943). Introduction The present article aims to discuss the advantages and limitations of oral histories (in the form of both video recordings and interviews), as sociolinguists’ main tools for linguistic and dialectal research, as well as for historians to document various histor- ical moments in Albania. The oral histories analyzed in the article were collected be- tween 2007 and 2010 (for the Devoll speech) and during the period 2010-2015 (for the Farsherot speech1) mainly in the Korça area, situated in South-Eastern Albania, an area of complex linguistic contacts (Albanian-Slavic, Macedonian-Greek), where the Tosk dialect of the Albanian language and its various speeches also come in con- tact with the Aromanian dialect, particularly with its Farsherot speech. -

V6T 1W5, Canada September 4, 1974 ii ABSTRACT In Part One the composition of Book 45 of Livy's Ab Urbe Condita is studied and an attempt is made to trace portions of the book to a small number of principal sources. It is demonstrated that Livy used the work of the Greek historian Polybius for his account of Roman activities in the Hellenistic east and for Roman relations with the Hellenistic states. Livy's Latin sources in this book were the Sullan annalists Valerius Antias and Q. Claudius Quadrigarius, of whom Claudius may have been the more prominent. Livy used these late annalists for his account of events in Rome and the west, and for administrative details such as lists of magistrates.
