Ki şinin dı ş ko şullardan ba ğımsız olarak ya şamını sürdürebilmesi, erdemlerini koruyabilmesi, mutlulu ğu kendi içinde bulabilmesi, kendi kendine yeterli olabilmesi ve bilgece bir ya şam sürebilmesi için nasıl bir yol izlemesi gerekti ği Seneca’nın ba şta De Constantia Sapientis ’i olmak üzere di ğer bazı felsefî eserlerinden yapılan alıntılardan da yararlanılarak Stoa felsefesi ı şığında ele alınmı ştır. Ayrıca tezde “erdem” ( arete; Lat . virtus ), “dinginlik” ( ataraxia/ euthymia; Lat . tranquillitas ), “duygulanımsızlık” ( apathia; Lat. impassibilitas ) gibi kavramlar üzerinde de durularak içsel özgürlü ğün ki şiye kazandırdıkları anlatılmaya çalı şılmı ştır. iii THE INNER FREEDOM IN SENECA’S DE CONSTANTIA SAPIENTIS Elif Burcu ÖZKAN ABSTRACT In this thesis, Seneca’s notion of “ inner freedom ” and “ apathy” are analyzed by using his De Constantia Sapientis (The Constancy of The Sage) and Stoic ethic. For the ability of one’s living free from external circumstances, protecting virtues, attaining happiness inward, being self- sufficient and living a life wisely, what kind of a way one should follow are handled by using especially Seneca’s De Constantia Sapientis , also quotations from some other his philosophical works in the light of Stoic philosophy. In this thesis also by analyzing the concepts like “virtue” ( arete; Lat . virtus ), “ataraxy” ( ataraxia/ euthymia; Lat . tranquillitas ) and “apathy” ( apatheia; Lat. impassibilitas ), have been tried to explain the things which the inner freedom gains to. iv ÖNSÖZ Mutlulu ğu dı ş dünyada, maddede, yüzeysel durum ve tutkularda aramanın artık bir gelenek halini aldı ğı ça ğımızda, insanın asıl ihtiyacı olan huzurun aslında kendi içinde oldu ğu gerçe ğini, aklı izleyerek evrenin nedenselli ğini anlayarak ya şamanın önemini vurgulayan bir çalı şma hazırlamak istedim. Tutku ve aşırılıklardan uzak kalarak; olaylara ba ğlı mutlulu ğun aslında yapay bir teselliden ba şka bir şey olmadı ğını bilerek ya şamanın önemine inandı ğım için kalıcı de ğerlerden biri üzerinde çalı şmayı uygun gördüm. Evreni, ya şamı ve gerçe ği tanımada felsefî e ğitim ve dü şüncenin gereklili ğine inandı ğım için, insanın iç dünyasının ve giderek bilgeli ğin kapılarını aralayan ‘insanın içsel özgürlü ğü’ kavramı çalı şmamızın esasını olu şturmaktadır. Bu metni yazmaktaki amacım, gerçek ya şamın ve mutlulu ğun yalnızca felsefî dü şünce sayesinde; do ğaya uygun, tatminkâr, olayların nedenselli ğini görerek ve dingin ya şayarak elde edilebilece ğine inandı ğım ve Stoa felsefesini de bu anlamda kendime en yakın gördü ğüm için; Stoa ahlâk öğretisini ele alıp, Seneca’nın metinlerinin, özellikle de içsel özgürlük ve sarsılmazlık idealini anlatmak için yazdı ğı De Constantia Sapientis adlı eserinin ışığında bir arada sunmaktır. Bu eserin en önemli elyazması, Seneca’nın di ğer 11 felsefî eseriyle birlikte “Dialogi” (Konu şmalar- Diyaloglar) ba şlı ğı altında bir arada olup, 10-11. yy’da İtalya-Milano’da hazırlanmı ş olan Codex Ambrosianus ’ta bulunur. İlk edisyonu ise 1475 tarihli Napoli edisyonudur. Bu çalı şmayla birlikte De Constantia Sapientis eseri Latince’den Türkçe’ye ilk kez çevrilmi ştir. Antik kaynaklardan yapılan alıntıların Türkçe’ye çevirileri de tarafımdan yapılmı ştır. Bu çalı şmada, Stoa ahlâkının ‘insanın ba ğımsızlı ğı’ ( libertas ) ilkesinden yola çıkarak, Latince’de ‘ liberum arbitrium ’ tamlamasıyla kar şılanan 1; Seneca’nın da “ libertas ” kelimesini kullanarak, kimi zaman da “ apathia ” ve “tranquillitas ” gibi içsel özgürlü ğün sa ğladı ğı erdemleri anlatarak önemini her zaman vurguladı ğı ve akla ve do ğaya uygun ya şamda en önemli ereklerden saydı ğı ‘insanın içsel özgürlü ğü’ kavramını incelemek üzere, Seneca’nın De Constantia Sapientis (Bilgenin Sarsılmazlı ğı) eseri temel olarak alınmı ştır. Ayrıca, Seneca’nın De Providentia , Epistulae Morales, De Brevitate Vitae, De Vita Beata, De Tranquillitate Animi adlı felsefî eserlerinden ve Medea trajedisinden de konuyla ilgili alıntılar yaptım. Bazı Yunanca felsefî terimlerin Latince kar şılıkları için etimoloji ve felsefe sözlüklerinin yanı sıra, Y. Kenan Yonarsoy’un Cicero’nun Felsefî Terminolojisi adlı doktora tezinden de yararlandım. 2 Gerek mutlulukta, gerekse kötü durumlarda ki şinin dı ş olay ve etkilerden ba ğımsız olmasında, iç dünyasını özgürle ştirmesinde ve kalıcı huzuru yakalamasında en önemli etkenlerden biri oldu ğu için, içsel olarak özgür olabilmenin yollarının ve bu özgürlü ğün sa ğladıklarının, felsefî görü şlerin ve Antik metinlerin ı şığında anlatıldı ğı bu çalı şmada, içsel özgürlü ğe kavu şup, di ğer felsefî çalı şmalarla ruhunu eğitti ği sürece, ki şiye bilgeli ğin ve dinginli ğin kapılarını aralayacak olan “impassibilitas”/ “apathia” (duygulanımlardan, tutkulardan uzak olma), “tranquillitas” (dinginlik), “ temperantia/ moderatio” (ölçülülük, kendini tutma, ılımlılık), “ ataraxia ” (dinginlik, sarsılmazlık) gibi erdemlere ve nihayetinde “sapientia” ya (bilgelik) ula şma a şamaları da Seneca’nın konuya ili şkin dü şünceleri temel alınarak anlatılmı ştır.     Julia Preuß Vita Senecae Eine deutsch-lateinische Kurzbiographie auf Grundlage der Epistulae morales 1. Herkunft und Ausbildung Lucius Annaeus Seneca wurde um die Zeitenwende in der südspanischen Stadt Corduba, welche damals die Hauptstadt der römischen Provinz Baetica war, geboren. Sein Geburtsjahr lässt sich nicht exakt bestimmen: Es lag zwischen 4 vor und 1 nach Christi Geburt, wahrscheinlich 1 v. Chr. Seine Familie gehörte dem Ritterstand an und war recht begütert. Senecas Vater, Lucius Annaeus Seneca der Ältere (ca. 55 v. Chr. bis 37 n. Chr.) war in der kaiserlichen Verwaltung tätig und darüber hinaus Redelehrer und Redner. Sein rhetorisches Hauptwerk, welches ihm auch den Namen ‚Seneca Rhetor‘ einbrachte, ist ein Zeugnis für die rhetorische Praxis in der Kaiserzeit. Senecas Mutter Helvia, die deutlich jünger als ihr Gatte war, schien eine kluge und an den Wissenschaften interessierte Frau gewesen zu sein, was bei den römischen Männern jedoch im Allgemeinen als verpönt galt. Seneca bedauert später in einem Brief, den er seiner Mutter aus dem Exil schickte, dass diese aufgrund der konservativen Engstirnigkeit seines Vaters keine intensivere Ausbildung genossen habe. Sie kümmerte sich stattdessen in erster Linie um das Familienvermögen und hielt sich auch sonst eher im Hintergrund. Seneca hatte noch zwei Brüder, den älteren Novatus, später Statthalter der römischen Provinz Achaia in Griechenland, und den jüngeren Mela, den Vater des berühmten Dichters Lucan. Seine spanische Herkunft erwähnt Seneca selbst nicht explizit, was vielleicht auch der Tatsache geschuldet ist, dass die Familie kurz nach Senecas Geburt wegen der angestrebten Ausbildung und Karriere der drei Söhne nach Rom umzog. Hier erwarb Seneca zunächst wie üblich Grundkenntnisse beim Elementarlehrer, dem grammaticus, sowie eine rhetorische Ausbildung.

    GUILT, REDEMPTION AND RECEPTION: REPRESENTING ROMAN FEMALE SUICIDE ELEANOR RUTH GLENDINNING, BA (Hons) MA Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy DECEMBER 2011 Abstract This thesis examines representations of Roman female suicide in a variety of genres and periods from the history and poetry of the Augustan age (especially Livy, Ovid, Horace, Propertius and Vergil), through the drama and history of the early Principate (particularly Seneca and Tacitus), to some of the Church fathers (Tertullian, Jerome and Augustine) and martyr acts of Late Antiquity. The thesis explores how the highly ambiguous and provocative act of female suicide was developed, adapted and reformulated in historical, poetic, dramatic and political narratives. The writers of antiquity continually appropriated this controversial motif in order to comment on and evoke debates about issues relating to the moral, social and political concerns of their day: the ethics of a voluntary death, attitudes towards female sexuality, the uses and abuses of power, and traditionally expected female behaviour. The empirical focus is the metrical structure of Seneca's anapaestic odes. On the basis of a detailed formal analysis, in which special attention is paid to the delimitation and internal structure of metrical periods, I argue against the dimeter colometry traditionally assumed. This conclusion in turn is based on a second, more methodological claim, namely that in establishing the colometry of an ancient piece of poetry, the modern metrician is only allowed to set apart a given string of metrical elements as a separate metron, colon or period, if this postulated metrical entity could 'aurally' be distinguished as such by the hearer.

    Don’t Stand So Close To Me: Antigone’s Pietas in Seneca’s Phoenissae Critics have long noted that Seneca foregrounds the theme of incest in his Theban dramas to a greater degree than previous authors (Fantham 1983; Hirschberg 1987; Barchiesi 1988; Frank 1995; Boyle 2011). In fact, the Oedipus of the Phoenissae – wandering in exile with his daughter Antigone – opens the play with fears about replicating his past sins with his daughter (timeo post matrem omnia, Phoen. 50). And yet despite the persistence of this theme, Seneca’s Antigone is often read as an unpolluted, singular exemplum of filial fidelity separate from her nefanda domus’ incestuous patterns (Paul 1953; Fantham 1983; Hirschberg 1987; Barchiesi 1988; Frank 1995; Mader 2010). This paper challenges this pervasive assumption by investigating how Seneca rewrites Antigone’s legendary pietas. In particular, I argue that Seneca manipulates the language of elegiac devotion to create out of Antigone’s pledges of fidelity a disturbing scene of would-be seduction that threatens to realize Oedipus’ fears. In doing so, I shed new light on how Seneca reclaims a canonical figure from the literary tradition for his own poetic program. Seneca follows tradition by having Antigone pledge to be Oedipus’s eternal companion in exile. Nevertheless, her description of their future wanderings blends this well-known aspect of the Theban legend with a further topos from Latin erotic poetry: the amator’s pledge to follow the beloved anywhere (Phoen. 61-73; cf. Prop.2.26B.29-44; Tib.1.4.41-56; Verg.Ecl.10; Ov.Am.1.9.9-16, Am.2.16.19ff and McKeown 1987 vol 2.

    Seneca on Love Anna Lydia MOTTO University of South Florida [email protected] Recibido: 15 de enero de 2007 Aceptado: 7 de marzo de 2007 omnia vincit Amor: et nos cedamus Amori Vergil1 ABSTRACT Within Seneca’s prose, one detects a deep understanding of the true feeling and significance of love in its different aspects —love for one’s family, for one’s friends, for one’s spouse, for one’s fellow men, for one’s country. Seneca’s ability to depict this human passion so vividly stems from his own good fortune to have experienced this emotion to the fullest in his own life. His philosophical writings are replete with moving descriptions of the many varieties of love that so strongly touched his own heart. True love, Seneca maintains, is, in many ways, analogous to an ideal friendship: both arise from mutual, genuine affection. In both cases, Seneca offers a simple philtre for their acquisition and their retention: si vis amari, ama. No one is deserving of love who is incapable of bestowing it upon others. Love is an undiluted emotion conferred with magnanimity; it does not look to personal convenience; it remains steadfast and is not altered by the vicissitudes of time and fortune. Such unselfish love gives gaudium to one’s soul. Our Cordoban Philosopher embraced a humanitarianism, a cosmopolitanism, and a love that included all human beings —men and women, rich and poor, masters and slaves. Keywords: Love. Friendship.
