Weber, Dean of the Graduate School iii Curriculum Vitae Lauren Donovan was born in 1981 in Illinois, and spent her formative years in Concord, Massachusetts. She earned a B. A. summa cum laude in Classics from Cornell University in 2003, with a thesis titled “Ilia and Early Imperial Rome: The Roman Origin Legend in Text and Art” and received the Department of Classics prize in Latin upon graduation. Before beginning her graduate work at Brown University, Lauren taught Latin and Greek at the high school level for two years. During her graduate career, Lauren has presented talks on many topics including the idea of learnedness in Apuleius’ Metamorphoses, the role of Prometheus in Apollonius’ Argonautica, and various aspects of her dissertation work on the Octavia. She has also been the recipient of the Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in Humanistic Studies (2005) and the Memoria Romana Dissertation Fellowship (2010). She is currently a visiting instructor at Wesleyan University. -
Notes on Seneca's Trojan Women for Vce Students
NOTES ON SENECA’S TROJAN WOMEN FOR VCE STUDENTS Betty Gabriel-Jones Seneca’s Trojan Women, is, like most of his plays, modelled on a Greek original, Eurip- ides’ Women of Troy. However, he brings a distinctly Roman attitude to his plays, an attitude no doubt at least partly formed by a life led in and around the courts of the Julio-Claudian emperors. Seneca thrived under Tiberius, fell out of favour with Caligula, returned to Rome on Caligula’s death, was exiled by Claudius, then recalled, became influential at the court of Nero (indeed was probably the second most powerful man in Rome, after the emperor) and was eventually sentenced to death by Nero. This eventful and, one assumes, stressful life surely played a part in his somewhat pessimistic view of life. It is hard to see how this could not be the case. After all, his protégé, Nero, murdered his own stepbrother, his stepsister/wife and his mother Agrippina. His second wife, whom he supposedly loved, he kicked to death in a drunken rage. Witnessing such events, even if one were not involved, would not lead one to see life as a sunny, cheerful affair. And Seneca was not uninvolved. He was no innocent, and may even have condoned the killing of Agrippina; certainly he composed a speech for Nero in which he justified his action. In addition to all this, Seneca lived in a Rome where bloody and murderous games were the staple entertainment of the masses. By philosophy, Seneca was a stoic—that is to say, he advised a life designed around ra- tional behaviour, modesty, and discipline. -

Pigoń Jakub, The Portrayal of Seneca in the Octavia and in Tacitus’ Annals The paper examines the representation of Seneca in two literary works of the late 1st and early 2nd centuries Ad, the anonymous tragedy Octavia and the Annals by Tacitus. In the Octavia Seneca appears as the emperor Nero’s upright but unhappy teacher trying in vain to inculcate salutary advice to his master. There is no question of his being responsible for the crimes of Nero; the picture of him drawn in the play is wholly favourable. The portrayal of Seneca in Tacitus’ Annals is more complex and nuanced, and only seldom does the historian give his own views about Nero’s advisor. However, it would be wrong to suppose that Seneca is harshly criticised by Tacitus. keywords: Seneca the Younger; Octavia praetexta; Tacitus; Nero; characterisation in literature; Roman literature (1st and 2nd cent. Ad); Roman Empire Seneca the Younger as a man, philosopher, statesman and writer, was judged by his contemporaries and posteriors in many various ways, arousing great emotions (both positive and negative) – and leaving few indifferent. I have written elsewhere about the way he was presented in the Roman literature of the Early Empire (from Seneca the Elder to Aulus Gellius).1 Here, I would like to take a closer look at two texts particularly important in the history of the early reception of Seneca – an unknown author’s tragedy Octavia (probably written right after Nero’s death in June 68 or in the 70s of the 1st century2), and Cornelius Tacitus’ historical work, the Annals (usually dated to the second decade of the 2nd century). -

Herkunft und Ausbildung Lucius Annaeus Seneca wurde um die Zeitenwende in der südspanischen Stadt Corduba, welche damals die Hauptstadt der römischen Provinz Baetica war, geboren. Sein Geburtsjahr lässt sich nicht exakt bestimmen: Es lag zwischen 4 vor und 1 nach Christi Geburt, wahrscheinlich 1 v. Chr. Seine Familie gehörte dem Ritterstand an und war recht begütert. Senecas Vater, Lucius Annaeus Seneca der Ältere (ca. 55 v. Chr. bis 37 n. Chr.) war in der kaiserlichen Verwaltung tätig und darüber hinaus Redelehrer und Redner. Sein rhetorisches Hauptwerk, welches ihm auch den Namen ‚Seneca Rhetor‘ einbrachte, ist ein Zeugnis für die rhetorische Praxis in der Kaiserzeit. Senecas Mutter Helvia, die deutlich jünger als ihr Gatte war, schien eine kluge und an den Wissenschaften interessierte Frau gewesen zu sein, was bei den römischen Männern jedoch im Allgemeinen als verpönt galt. Seneca bedauert später in einem Brief, den er seiner Mutter aus dem Exil schickte, dass diese aufgrund der konservativen Engstirnigkeit seines Vaters keine intensivere Ausbildung genossen habe. Sie kümmerte sich stattdessen in erster Linie um das Familienvermögen und hielt sich auch sonst eher im Hintergrund. Seneca hatte noch zwei Brüder, den älteren Novatus, später Statthalter der römischen Provinz Achaia in Griechenland, und den jüngeren Mela, den Vater des berühmten Dichters Lucan. Seine spanische Herkunft erwähnt Seneca selbst nicht explizit, was vielleicht auch der Tatsache geschuldet ist, dass die Familie kurz nach Senecas Geburt wegen der angestrebten Ausbildung und Karriere der drei Söhne nach Rom umzog. Hier erwarb Seneca zunächst wie üblich Grundkenntnisse beim Elementarlehrer, dem grammaticus, sowie eine rhetorische Ausbildung. -

The Praetorian Guard Received a Witness In the year 59 C.E., the centurion Julius and his tired soldiers led a group of prisoners into Rome. They came into the city through the Porta Capena gate. On Palatine Hill they could see the palace of Emperor Nero, which was protected by Praetorian sol- diers armed with swords. (See footnote.) The prisoners walked by the Roman Forum and up Viminal Hill. They went past a gar- RMN-Grand Palais/Art Resource, NY den with many altars to Roman gods and then past a large area used for parades and military training. One of the prisoners was the apostle Paul. Some time earlier, during a storm at sea, an angel had told Paul: “You must stand be- fore Caesar.” (Acts 27:24) Paul might have been wondering if these words would soon come true. As he looked around at the city, he may have remembered what Jesus had told him at the Tower of Antonia in Jerusalem years earlier: “Be of good courage! Claudius, built in the year 51 Perhaps Paul looked at the Praetorian camp, called the Castra Praetoria. This was a large fortress with high red-brick walls and towers. It housed 12 cohorts of the Praetorian Guard and sever- al cohorts of the city’s police, including cavalry. -

GUILT, REDEMPTION AND RECEPTION: REPRESENTING ROMAN FEMALE SUICIDE ELEANOR RUTH GLENDINNING, BA (Hons) MA Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy DECEMBER 2011 Abstract This thesis examines representations of Roman female suicide in a variety of genres and periods from the history and poetry of the Augustan age (especially Livy, Ovid, Horace, Propertius and Vergil), through the drama and history of the early Principate (particularly Seneca and Tacitus), to some of the Church fathers (Tertullian, Jerome and Augustine) and martyr acts of Late Antiquity. The thesis explores how the highly ambiguous and provocative act of female suicide was developed, adapted and reformulated in historical, poetic, dramatic and political narratives. The writers of antiquity continually appropriated this controversial motif in order to comment on and evoke debates about issues relating to the moral, social and political concerns of their day: the ethics of a voluntary death, attitudes towards female sexuality, the uses and abuses of power, and traditionally expected female behaviour. In different literary contexts, and in different periods of Roman history, writers and thinkers engaged in this same intellectual exercise by utilising the suicidal female figure in their works. ii Acknowledgments I would like to thank the Arts and Humanities Research Council for providing the financial assistance necessary for me to carry out this research. Lesser, University of Pennsylvania Associate Professor Lori Humphrey Newcomb Professor Curtis Perry Abstract Benjamin Jonson’s Works (1616) and William Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies (1623) overwhelmingly dominate studies of the English drama collection. This critical focus has revealed much of what we know about the collection as a format for dramatic texts in early modern England, but it has also concealed aspects of the format’s history. Scholars regularly assume that the Jonson and Shakespeare Folios were the first in England to gather dramatic texts in collections; others often treat the volumes as paradigms for how drama collections looked, functioned, and signified. By examining collections printed or compiled from approximately 1512 to 1623, “English Printed Drama in Collection Before Jonson and Shakespeare” offers a new conceptualization of the collection. This dissertation discovers that drama appeared in multiple collected formats other than large folio volumes and was organized around a diversity of principles of collection other than (and in addition to) “the author.” For example, drama was presented in ten-play quarto editions supporting humanist pedagogical agendas, reader-compiled octavo miscellanies created for political persuasion, and serially published sets celebrating the English church and crown. This diversity of collected forms was constructed through different material processes to support the financial and/or ideological aims of various agents, including printers, publishers, booksellers, editors, and readers. -
