  • The Community Industry: an Analysis of Reddit and /R/Socialism
THE COMMUNITY INDUSTRY: AN ANALYSIS OF REDDIT AND /R/SOCIALISM Richard Babb A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2021 Committee: Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Samuel T McAbee, Graduate Faculty Representative Lara Lengel Yanqin Lu © 2021 Richard Babb All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Social media is an increasingly important space for community formation and interactions. Coinciding with the rise of social media has been an increasing interest in leftist ideologies once outside the mainstream. This analysis seeks to understand the social media site Reddit.com’s enabling and constraining features on the community /r/socialism. Using the communicative theory of identity and Marxist media theory not only to look at Reddit and /r/socialism’s relationship, but five key functions of a media: capital-economic, media sales and media market function, commodity circulation, domination, and the audience. Employing a mixed-methods approach enabled various data to be analyzed and relationally understood. Qualitative content analysis was used to examine user’s salient topics and their uses for the community. Survey methods were deployed to the community to gather demographic data on the /r/socialism community and user opinions on the group’s relationship with Reddit. Finally, secondary documents were analyzed to provide greater context to the other findings. Findings from the content analysis of salient subjects showed a preference for contemporary capitalist critique, socialist quotations, and class issues. However, topics impacting women and other minority groups were light to nonexistent.

1 Alien Invasions, Vulnerable Bodies: Science Fiction and the Biopolitics of Embodiment from H. G. Wells to Octavia Butler By Rosalind Diaz A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Katherine Snyder, Chair Professor Mark Goble Professor Mel Chen Fall 2018 1 Alien Invasions, Vulnerable Bodies: Science Fiction and the Biopolitics of Embodiment from H. G. Wells to Octavia Butler © 2018 Rosalind Diaz 1 Abstract Alien Invasions, Vulnerable Bodies: Science Fiction and the Biopolitics of Embodiment from H. G. Wells to Octavia Butler by Rosalind Diaz Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Berkeley Professor Katherine Snyder, Chair This dissertation turns to alien invasion narratives to elucidate the social, ethical and political consequences associated with the modern body as an entity with clearly defined borders. The imperatives of liberalism and neoliberalism constitute the modern body as a white, male, heteronormative body, navigating appropriate relationships to production and consumption. How does the human body emerge as a bounded entity in science and science fiction from the nineteenth century onward? Alien invasion narratives offer a fruitful way to trace this concept and its development over time. These narratives model proper ways of attending to one’s body as well as proper ways of defending oneself—and, by extension, the planet—from alien invasion. The present inquiry focuses on three different alien invasion narratives, beginning with H. G. Wells’s influential The War of the Worlds (1897), before moving to consider a pair of twentieth- century American texts: Philip Kaufman’s film Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and Octavia Butler’s novel Fledgling (2005).

McLaughlin Associate Professor of English Benjamin M. Ogles Dean, College of Arts and Sciences Abstract KOONCE, ELIZABETH GODKE. Ph.D. August 2006. English SENSATION FICTION AND THE LAW: DANGEROUS ALTERNATIVE SOCIAL TEXTS AND CULTURAL REVOLUTION IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY BRITAIN (238 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Joseph P. McLaughlin This dissertation argues that nineteenth-century sensation fiction evoked a cultural revolution that threatened to challenge accepted norms for personal behavior and increase possibilities for scripting one’s life outside of established norms for respectable behavior. Because of the ways that it threatened to represent new scripts for personal behavior, sensation, which I term a “dangerous alternative social text,” disrupted hegemony and provided new ways of thinking amongst its Victorian British readership; it became a vehicle through which the law and government (public discourses) ended up colliding with domesticity

  • Animorphs the Threat
Animorphs The Threat Converted to E-Book by: Kamal Raniga My name is Rachel. And I was deep in this strange dream that seemed to involve me trying on dresses at my favorite department store. Only the salesladies kept bringing me things that were way, way too small. So I said, "Hey, can't you tell these aren't my size?" And the saleslady said, "Well, we don't have anything in your size." "What?" I demanded. "You don't have anything in size three hundred and twelve?" Wait a minute, I thought. / don't wear size three hundred and twelve. But at that moment I caught sight of myself in the mirror. And I was in my elephant morph. I was still growing. Bigger and bigger, till my massive bulk was pressing people against the walls and floors and ceiling. I looked down, and there, beneath one massive fold of elephant belly, was a small figure in an orange hooded sweatshirt. "Oh, my God! She killed Kenny!" someone cried. "Aaaahhhh!" I screamed. "Try Juniors on the second floor," the saleslady suggested. "Only please don't use the elevator." And then she leaped at me and started digging her fingernails into me. They were really sharp. So I got mad and I shoved her. Only when I shoved her, she suddenly wasn't a saleslady at all. She was a bird. "Aaahhh!" I yelled, sitting straight up. There, in the darkness of my room, the large gray bird fluttered back and knocked into my desk. "Tobias?" I whispered. Only it wasn't a red-tailed hawk.

  • Invasion of the Body Snatchers Kathleen Loock
6 The Return of the Pod People: Remaking Cultural Anxieties in Invasion of the Body Snatchers Kathleen Loock Don Siegel’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), based on a novel by Jack Finney, has become one of the most influential alien invasion films of all time. The film’s theme of alien paranoia—the fear that some invis- ible invaders could replace individual human beings and turn them into a collective of emotionless pod people—resonated with widespread anxieties in 1950s American culture. It has been read as an allegory of the communist threat during the Cold War but also as a commen- tary on McCarthyism, the alienating effects of capitalism, conformism, postwar radiation anxiety, the return of “brainwashed” soldiers from the Korean War, and masculine fears of “the potential social, politi- cal, and personal disenfranchisement of postwar America’s hegemonic white patriarchy” (Mann 49). 1 Engaging with the profound concerns of its time, Invasion of the Body Snatchers is widely regarded as a signature film of the 1950s. Yet despite its cultural and historical specificity, the narrative of alien-induced dehumanization has lent itself to reinterpretations and re-imaginations like few others, always shifting with the zeitgeist and replacing former cultural anxieties with more contemporary and urgent ones. Siegel’s film has inspired three cinematic remakes over the last 55 years: Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Abel Ferrara’s Body Snatchers (1993), and, most recently, Oliver Hirschbiegel’s The Invasion (2007). Bits and pieces of the film have also found their way into the American popular imagination, taking the form of intermedial refer- ences to Invasion of the Body Snatchers in movies, television series, car- toons, and video games.

In an hour or so, once I was out of sight of land, I would lower my sails and wait for a Bug fighter to come lift me off the deck. The engine backwash of the Bug fighter would capsize the boat. Or / might put the Taxxon pilot to the test and see if he could ram the low-slung boat. That would puzzle the humans. Either way, my body would never be found. My time of lying low was over. I would spearhead the invasion of Earth. I would take charge of our greatest conquest. I would stand alone atop the Yeerk military hierarchy. I was to become Visser One. Her human name is Eva. There was a time when she had a loving husband and a son, Marco. When she had a wonderful career. But that was before she was infested by Edriss 562. Before the invasion of Earth. Now, Edriss 562 lives in Eva's head and controls her every movement. And through Eva, Edriss has become the highest-ranking general in the Yeerk empire, surpassing even her arch rival, Visser Three. She is Visser One. But, it has become known that Visser One's tactics for attaining her current position were less than acceptable -- even to the Yeerks. Now she is on trial for treason. If she's found innocent she'll continue to rule. But if she's found guilty, she'll lose her life -- and possibly the life of her host, Eva.

  • THEORIES of CONFLICT and the IRAQ WAR Daniel Lieberfeld
International Journal of Peace Studies, Volume 10, Number 2, Autumn/Winter 2005 THEORIES OF CONFLICT AND THE IRAQ WAR Daniel Lieberfeld Abstract The article examines the U.S. decision to invade Iraq from a range of analytic perspectives—realism, liberalism, elite interests, ideological influences, and personal and social psychology—in order to better understand the causes of the invasion decision and implications of the particular case study for general theories of war causes. The analysis distinguishes among different types of causal influences and traces links among the various analytic perspectives. The 2003 invasion of Iraq has become the largest, longest, and most costly use of armed force by the United States since the Vietnam war. It is the first major post-Cold- war U.S. military action taken apart from an international organization and the first U.S. experience as an occupying power in a Middle Eastern country. Although the invasion decision is in some respects unprecedented, particularly concerning extensive U.S. military involvement in an Arab or Muslim country, the contention here is that the Iraq invasion is not sui generis and can be usefully understood with reference to established theories of war causes. This article considers how theories concerning the causes of war can help explain the U.S. decision. It explores how contending interpretations of this particular war can add to understanding of war causes generally, and also traces linkages among the theoretical perspectives. Table 1 summarizes the theoretical perspectives under discussion, beginning with realism, which, emphasizes motives related to national security, power, and resources. By contrast, liberalism considers differences between democracies and non-democracies to be a fundamental cause of war.
