What of this union of the seas?… What good or ill from LESSEPS’ cut Eastward and Westward shall proceed? —“Latest—From the Sphinx,” Punch, 57 (27 November 1869), 210 IN 1859 FERDINAND DE LESSEPS began his great endeavour to sunder the isthmus of Suez and connect the Mediterranean with the Red Sea, the Occident with the Orient, simultaneously altering the ge- ography of the earth and irrevocably upsetting the precarious global balance of power. Ten years later the eyes of the world were upon Egypt as the Suez Canal was inaugurated amidst extravagant Franco-Egyp- tian celebrations in which a glittering cast of international dignitar- ies participated. That the opening of the canal would be momentous was acknowledged at the time, though the nature of its impact was a matter for speculation, as the question posed above by Punch implies. While its codevelopers France and Egypt pinned great hopes on the ca- nal, Britain was understandably suspicious of an endeavor that could potentially undermine its global imperial dominance—it would bring India nearer, but also make it more vulnerable to rival powers. Seductive yet repellent, ancient yet new, the vampire is a creature of contradictions – hero, villain and victim all in one. An accomplished crosser of thresholds, the vampire has travelled from the page to the stage, and to screens both big and small. Timed for Halloween, our five-week course is devoted to vampire narratives of the last 200 years. We’ll consider the vampire’s victims – those who are ‘innocent’, those who are negligent, and those who are made complicit by their confused and confusing desires. We’ll also discuss the often strangely unattractive characters who are the vampire’s would-be destroyers, the hinterlands they inhabit and the instruction manuals they take with them. And, of course, we’ll be looking at vampires themselves, following their transformations through time and across a variety of genres and media. Amongst those making an appearance will be vampires male and female; Byronic heroes; femmes fatales; the mixed-race vampires of Victorian fiction; vampires who threaten the very psychic survival of their all-too-willing victims; and (a more recent development) comic vampires. -

Research Article Oncology Pleomorphic invasive lobular carcinoma (PILC) is an aggressive variant of invasive lobular breast cancer that is associated with poor clinical outcomes. Limited molecular data are available to explain the mechanistic basis for PILC behavior. To address this issue, targeted sequencing was performed to identify molecular alterations that define PILC. This sequencing analysis identified genes that distinguish PILC from classic ILC and invasive ductal carcinoma by the incidence of their genomic changes. In particular, insulin receptor substrate 2 (IRS2) is recurrently mutated in PILC, and pathway analysis reveals a role for the insulin receptor (IR)/insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF1R)/IRS2 signaling pathway in PILC. IRS2 mutations identified in PILC enhance invasion, revealing a role for this signaling adaptor in the aggressive nature of PILC. Steampunk movies are full of longing for science and technology and the embodiment of human rational spirit. Analysis of the worldview in its aesthetic characteristics, including postmodernist time-space view, infinite admiration of technology, rebellious speculative spirit, utopia and dystopia, and finally summarized The aesthetic significance of steampunk movies is to reflect the typical characteristics of contemporary literary thoughts. 1. Introduction Since the 1990s, a unique and fantastic art style has emerged. It emerged in the American science fiction world in the 1960s and 1970s. It was not until the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s. A science fiction novelist gradually “alienated” into an artistic style, which is steampunk. “Steam” and “Punk”, two cultural elements that are about a century apart, are integrated in the postmodernist aesthetic spirit that has emerged since the 1960s. Steampunk was born in literary works and quickly transferred to movies. It is a cross-media transfer of artistic style. Its main position for entering movies is in science fiction movies, but it does not specifically refer to science fiction movies. Other types of movies have steampunk elements. It can also be called a steampunk style movie, which is a kind of extended and fuzzy, cross-genre style movie.
