Wells to Octavia Butler by Rosalind Diaz Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Berkeley Professor Katherine Snyder, Chair This dissertation turns to alien invasion narratives to elucidate the social, ethical and political consequences associated with the modern body as an entity with clearly defined borders. The imperatives of liberalism and neoliberalism constitute the modern body as a white, male, heteronormative body, navigating appropriate relationships to production and consumption. How does the human body emerge as a bounded entity in science and science fiction from the nineteenth century onward? Alien invasion narratives offer a fruitful way to trace this concept and its development over time. These narratives model proper ways of attending to one’s body as well as proper ways of defending oneself—and, by extension, the planet—from alien invasion. The present inquiry focuses on three different alien invasion narratives, beginning with H. G. Wells’s influential The War of the Worlds (1897), before moving to consider a pair of twentieth- century American texts: Philip Kaufman’s film Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and Octavia Butler’s novel Fledgling (2005). -

p0834-835aspe-0726al 10/17/02 9:14 AM Page 834 ICAN MER A E LITERAT U R Science Fiction Reflects Cold War Fears Many writers of science fiction draw on the scientific and 1950–1959 social trends of the present to describe future societies that might arise if those trends were to continue. Nuclear proliferation, the space race, early computer technology, and the pervasive fear of known and unknown dangers during the Cold War were the realities that prompted a boom in science fiction dur- ing the 1950s and 1960s. THE BODY SNATCHERS Published in 1955 at the height of the Great Fear, Jack Finney’s The Body Snatchers (on which the movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers was based) tells of giant seed pods from outer space that descend on the inhabitants of a California town. The pods create perfect physical duplicates of the townspeople and lack only one thing—human souls. “Miles, he looks, sounds, acts, and remembers exactly like Ira. On the outside. But inside he’s different. His responses”—she stopped, hunting for the word— “aren’t emotionally right, if I can explain that. He remembers the past, in detail, and he’ll smile and say ‘You were sure a cute youngster, Willy. Bright one, too,’ just the way Uncle Ira did. But there’s something missing, and the same thing is true of Aunt Aleda, lately.” Wilma stopped, staring at nothing again, face intent, wrapped up in this, then she continued. “Uncle Ira was a father to me, from infancy, and when he talked about my childhood, Miles, there was—always—a special look in his eyes that meant he was remembering the wonderful quality of those days for him. -

6 The Return of the Pod People: Remaking Cultural Anxieties in Invasion of the Body Snatchers Kathleen Loock Don Siegel’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), based on a novel by Jack Finney, has become one of the most influential alien invasion films of all time. The film’s theme of alien paranoia—the fear that some invis- ible invaders could replace individual human beings and turn them into a collective of emotionless pod people—resonated with widespread anxieties in 1950s American culture. It has been read as an allegory of the communist threat during the Cold War but also as a commen- tary on McCarthyism, the alienating effects of capitalism, conformism, postwar radiation anxiety, the return of “brainwashed” soldiers from the Korean War, and masculine fears of “the potential social, politi- cal, and personal disenfranchisement of postwar America’s hegemonic white patriarchy” (Mann 49). 1 Engaging with the profound concerns of its time, Invasion of the Body Snatchers is widely regarded as a signature film of the 1950s. Yet despite its cultural and historical specificity, the narrative of alien-induced dehumanization has lent itself to reinterpretations and re-imaginations like few others, always shifting with the zeitgeist and replacing former cultural anxieties with more contemporary and urgent ones. Siegel’s film has inspired three cinematic remakes over the last 55 years: Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Abel Ferrara’s Body Snatchers (1993), and, most recently, Oliver Hirschbiegel’s The Invasion (2007). Bits and pieces of the film have also found their way into the American popular imagination, taking the form of intermedial refer- ences to Invasion of the Body Snatchers in movies, television series, car- toons, and video games. -

The Case of The Body Snatchers Alfonso Amendola*, Mario Tirino** Abstract: The mediology of literature is a disciplinary approach to the study of the complex literary forms of digital society (Ragone 2014). This approach is based on the theories about the literary medium developed by Marshall McLuhan (1954, 1962, 1964, 2011). This paper aims to investigate how the mediological approach can help to analyze contemporary narrative ecosystems (Innocenti, Pescatore 2017, 2014, 2012). These ecosystems are structured by wide-ranging media processes: convergence (Jenkins 2006), serialization, and transmediality (Scolari 2013, 2009, Freeman, Gambarato 2018). Through the analysis of the narrative ecosystem centered on the novel The Body Snatchers (1954), our research aims to highlight how literature produces universal cultural myths, how these myths evolve through interaction with media, technological and social environments, how media metaphors can anticipate and foreshadow the cultural processes of the digital society. -
The Contemporary American Horror Film Remake, 2003-2013
RE-ANIMATED: THE CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN HORROR FILM REMAKE, 2003-2013 Thesis submitted by Laura Mee In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy De Montfort University, March 2014 Abstract This doctoral thesis is a study of American horror remakes produced in the years 2003-2013, and it represents a significant academic intervention into an understanding of the horror remaking trend. It addresses the remaking process as one of adaptation, examines the remakes as texts in their own right, and situates them within key cultural, industry and reception contexts. It also shows how remakes have contributed to the horror genre’s evolution over the last decade, despite their frequent denigration by critics and scholars. Chapter One introduces the topic, and sets out the context, scope and approach of the work. Chapter Two reviews the key literature which informs this study, considering studies in adaptation, remaking, horror remakes specifically, and the genre more broadly. Chapter Three explores broad theoretical questions surrounding the remake’s position in a wider culture of cinematic recycling and repetition, and issues of fidelity and taxonomy. Chapter Four examines the ‘reboots’ of one key production company, exploring how changes are made across versions even as promotion relies on nostalgic connections with the originals. Chapter Five discusses a diverse range of slasher film remakes to show how they represent variety and contribute to genre development. Chapter Six considers socio-political themes in 1970s horror films and their contemporary post-9/11 remakes, and Chapter Seven focuses on gender representation and recent genre trends in the rape-revenge remake. -

From smartphones to surveillance states the technology we use permeates our lives. As the nature of our technology changes our relationship with it shifts from suspicion to assured and back again. These shifts are responses to new inventions, social movements, and great conflicts. This paper will explore the intimate link between a society’s relationship with technology and how this relationship manifests in the science fiction literature produced by that culture. We need to define science fiction in order to constrain what literature will be addressed in this paper. -
