The Community Industry: an Analysis of Reddit and /R/Socialism
THE COMMUNITY INDUSTRY: AN ANALYSIS OF REDDIT AND /R/SOCIALISM Richard Babb A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2021 Committee: Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Samuel T McAbee, Graduate Faculty Representative Lara Lengel Yanqin Lu © 2021 Richard Babb All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Social media is an increasingly important space for community formation and interactions. Coinciding with the rise of social media has been an increasing interest in leftist ideologies once outside the mainstream. This analysis seeks to understand the social media site Reddit.com’s enabling and constraining features on the community /r/socialism. Using the communicative theory of identity and Marxist media theory not only to look at Reddit and /r/socialism’s relationship, but five key functions of a media: capital-economic, media sales and media market function, commodity circulation, domination, and the audience. Employing a mixed-methods approach enabled various data to be analyzed and relationally understood. Qualitative content analysis was used to examine user’s salient topics and their uses for the community. Survey methods were deployed to the community to gather demographic data on the /r/socialism community and user opinions on the group’s relationship with Reddit. Finally, secondary documents were analyzed to provide greater context to the other findings. Findings from the content analysis of salient subjects showed a preference for contemporary capitalist critique, socialist quotations, and class issues. However, topics impacting women and other minority groups were light to nonexistent. -

The 64 Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs Mikiso Hane Undergraduate Student Prize Paper I Want to Go Far Away: Discover Japan
Studies on Asia Series V, Vol. 1, No. 1 (Spring 2016) The 64th Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs Mikiso Hane Undergraduate Student Prize Paper I Want to Go Far Away: Discover Japan and Japanese Identity Tourism in the 1970s Sawyer Middeleer Carleton College The Japan of 1970 was caught at the convergence point of two cresting socio-political waves. From one direction surged the optimism of a decade of high-speed economic growth propelled by involvement in Western international trade. Progress towards modernization rushed forward at a lightning clip after World War II with Prime Minister’s declaration of the “official” end of the “postwar era” in 1956, the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, achievement of the world’s third-highest GDP in 1968, and Osaka’s Expo ’70.1 Much of Japan’s modern development went hand in hand with Americanization. On a structural level, this meant the Japanese government was forced to reform itself to conform to American Cold War policy. Simultaneously, Japanese society saw the rapid growth of an urban middle-class, popularization of American forms of entertainment, and commonplace consumption of American goods. In the eyes of many Japanese and foreign observers alike, the “New Japan” had finally legitimized itself as a member of the modern global community. However, there came from the other direction a rising tide of disillusionment with urban materialism and the less desirable legacies of a quarter-century of American hegemonic guardianship. As the material benefits of Showa era high-speed growth became more conspicuous and more pervasive, growing infatuation with American 1 See Michael Schaller, Altered States: The United States and Japan Since the Occupation (New York: Oxford University Press, 1997); Carol Gluck, “The Past in the Present,” in Postwar Japan as History, ed. -

Animorphs the Threat
Animorphs The Threat Converted to E-Book by: Kamal Raniga My name is Rachel. And I was deep in this strange dream that seemed to involve me trying on dresses at my favorite department store. Only the salesladies kept bringing me things that were way, way too small. So I said, "Hey, can't you tell these aren't my size?" And the saleslady said, "Well, we don't have anything in your size." "What?" I demanded. "You don't have anything in size three hundred and twelve?" Wait a minute, I thought. / don't wear size three hundred and twelve. But at that moment I caught sight of myself in the mirror. And I was in my elephant morph. I was still growing. Bigger and bigger, till my massive bulk was pressing people against the walls and floors and ceiling. I looked down, and there, beneath one massive fold of elephant belly, was a small figure in an orange hooded sweatshirt. "Oh, my God! She killed Kenny!" someone cried. "Aaaahhhh!" I screamed. "Try Juniors on the second floor," the saleslady suggested. "Only please don't use the elevator." And then she leaped at me and started digging her fingernails into me. They were really sharp. So I got mad and I shoved her. Only when I shoved her, she suddenly wasn't a saleslady at all. She was a bird. "Aaahhh!" I yelled, sitting straight up. There, in the darkness of my room, the large gray bird fluttered back and knocked into my desk. "Tobias?" I whispered. Only it wasn't a red-tailed hawk. -

The History and Evolution of Dynamic Psychiatry Henri F. Ellenberger (1970) Chapter Two: the Emergence of Dynamic Psychiatry
The Discovery of the Unconscious: The History and Evolution of Dynamic Psychiatry Henri F. Ellenberger (1970) Chapter Two: The Emergence of Dynamic Psychiatry The emergence of dynamic psychiatry can be traced to the year 1775, to a clash between the physician Mesmer and the exorcist Gassner. Gassner, an immensely successful and popular healer, personified the forces of tradition. He had mastered an age-old technique that he applied in the name of the established religion, but the spirit of the times was against him. Mesmer, a son of the "Enlightenment," had new ideas, new techniques, and great hopes for the future. He was instrumental in defeating Gassner and believed that the time was propitious for the onset of the scientific revolution that he had in mind. However, the overthrow of a declining tradition does not in itself inaugurate a new one. Mesmer's theories were rejected, the organization he had founded was short-lived, and his therapeutic techniques were modified by his disciples. Nonetheless, he had provided the decisive impulse toward the elaboration of dynamic psychiatry, even though it would be a century before the findings of his disciples were to he integrated into the official corpus of neuropsychiatry by Charcot and his contemporaries. Gassner and Mesmer In the first months of 1775, crowds of people, rich and poor, noblemen and peasants, including among them patients of all kinds, swarmed to the small town of Ellwangen, in Wurttemberg, to see Father Johann Joseph Gassner, one of the most famous healers of all time. He exorcized patients in the presence of Catholic and Protestant church authorities, physicians, noblemen of all ranks, members of the bourgeoisie, and sceptics as well as believers. -

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Visser by K.A. Applegate Visser — K.A
Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Visser by K.A. Applegate Visser — K.A. Applegate. In an hour or so, once I was out of sight of land, I would lower my sails and wait for a Bug fighter to come lift me off the deck. The engine backwash of the Bug fighter would capsize the boat. Or / might put the Taxxon pilot to the test and see if he could ram the low-slung boat. That would puzzle the humans. Either way, my body would never be found. My time of lying low was over. I would spearhead the invasion of Earth. I would take charge of our greatest conquest. I would stand alone atop the Yeerk military hierarchy. I was to become Visser One. Her human name is Eva. There was a time when she had a loving husband and a son, Marco. When she had a wonderful career. But that was before she was infested by Edriss 562. Before the invasion of Earth. Now, Edriss 562 lives in Eva's head and controls her every movement. And through Eva, Edriss has become the highest-ranking general in the Yeerk empire, surpassing even her arch rival, Visser Three. She is Visser One. But, it has become known that Visser One's tactics for attaining her current position were less than acceptable -- even to the Yeerks. Now she is on trial for treason. If she's found innocent she'll continue to rule. But if she's found guilty, she'll lose her life -- and possibly the life of her host, Eva.
