Durithunga – Growing, nurturing, challenging and supporting urban Indigenous leadership in education i Language Weaves As highlighted in the following thesis, there are a number of key words and phrases that are typographically different from the rest of the thesis writing. Shifts in font and style are used to accent Indigenous world view and give clear signification to the higher order thought and conceptual processing of words and their deeper meaning within the context of this thesis (Martin, 2008). For ease of transition into this thesis, I have created the “Language Weaves” list of key words and phrases that flow through the following chapters. The list below has been woven in Migloo alphabetical order. The challenge, as I explore in detail in Chapter 5 of this thesis, is for next generations of Indigenous Australian writers to relay textual information in the languages of our people from our unique tumba tjinas. Dissecting my language usage in this way and creating a Language Weaves list has been very challenging, but is part of sharing the unique messages of this Indigenous Education field research to a broader, non- Indigenous and international audience. The following weaves list consists of words taken directly from the thesis. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of Southern Queensland ePrints [2005] ANZLH E-Journal Traditional law and Indigenous Resistance at Moreton Bay 1842-1855 LIBBY CONNORS* On the morning of 5 January 1855 when the British settlers of Moreton Bay publicly executed the Dalla-Djindubari man, Dundalli, they made sure that every member of the Brisbane town police was on duty alongside a detachment of native police under their British officer, Lieutenant Irving. Dundalli had been kept in chains and in solitary for the seven months of his confinement in Brisbane Gaol. Clearly the British, including the judge who condemned him, Sir Roger Therry, were in awe of him. The authorities insisted that these precautions were necessary because they feared escape or rescue by his people, a large number of whom had gathered in the scrub opposite the gaol to witness the hanging. Of the ten public executions in Brisbane between 1839 and 1859, including six of Indigenous men, none had excited this much interest from both the European and Indigenous communities.1 British satisfaction over Dundalli’s death is all the more puzzling when the evidence concerning his involvement in the murders for which he was condemned is examined. Dundalli was accused of the murders of Mary Shannon and her employer the pastoralist Andrew Gregor in October 1846, the sawyer William Waller in September 1847 and wounding with intent the lay missionary John Hausmann in 1845. In the first two cases the only witnesses were Mary Shannon’s five year old daughter and a “half- caste” boy living with Gregor whose age was uncertain but described as about ten or eleven years old. -

Global changes to address these questions are certainly important, but at the same time, inspiring, innovative and practical answers are also being developed in local communities around the world, supported by people of good will across all sectors. We pay our respect to these lands that provide for us. We acknowledge and pay respect to the ancestors that walked and managed these lands for many generations. Our Native Title determination on the 4th of July 2011 was built on the leadership of our ancestors and Elders – their wisdom and spirit continue to guide us. We acknowledge that Native Title is a significant way of recognising our rights to Country. Our Peoples continue to strive to further secure our rights and we honour their resolve. We hold a special place in our hearts for our historical Aboriginal families – we cherish their ongoing place in our community. We also welcome our mainstream neighbours and visitors to our Country. Strategic Advancement Group Committee Members Cameron Costello – CEO, Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation Cameron is a Quandamooka man from Moreton Bay off the coast of Brisbane in South East Queensland. Cameron is a law graduate from the University of Queensland and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Leisure Management. He has worked previously in the legal industry and for more than 15 years in local and state governments delivering Indigenous policies and programs including the Backing Indigenous Arts Program and the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair. Cameron is currently the CEO for the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation – the Native Title Body and cultural heritage body for Moreton Bay including Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) that jointly manages the Naree Budjong Djarra (My Mother Earth) National Park, runs Quandamooka Coast Tourism experiences and the Quandamooka Festival. He is on the Board of Minjerribah Camping, and a representative on the QTIC Indigenous Champions Network, Redland City Councils Tourism Sub Committee, North Stradbroke Island Economic Transition Strategy Committee, Queensland Koala Advisory Council and Moreton Bay Foundation Board. Chern'ee Sutton – Contemporary Indigenous Artist, Chern’ee Sutton Art Chern’ee is a proud contemporary Indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from Mt Isa. She started painting at the age of thirteen and is very passionate about sharing stories of her families’ culture and history with the rest of the world. Chern’ee has been fortunate enough to work with various departments and organisations including The Queensland Government, THE NRL, Tennis Australia and the Proudly supported by: Commonwealth Games. The Games saw her artwork on the mascot Borobi’s paws, feet, surfboard, name and advertising signage. -

Crowds both white and black were gathering to witness what was to be one of the last official public hangings in the colony of New South Wales. As the white residents made their way to the northern end of Queen Street, large numbers of Turrbal, Ningy Ningy and Djindubari were gathering in the scrubs on the hill which the Central Railway Station now occupies. The convict system was almost defunct as the last of the lifers’ terms were drawing to completion and the authorities were now confident that such brutal displays were no longer necessary to convince the public of the state’s power to discipline and control.1 Yet Brisbane officials were nowhere near as confident as their southern counterparts this morning. A detachment of Native Police and every town constable had been called out on duty. It was not the emancipist class but the Indigenous community that the Brisbane officials feared. One newly arrived settler, Robert Lane, 61 years later recalled for the Brisbane Courier the tensions in the town. ‘I was ordered to get out of the city,’ he claimed, ‘as the blacks might be hostile.’2 Extra precautions had been put in place for the hanging of the Indigenous leader Dundalli accused of several murders, but in the end sentenced to suffer death for just one, a sawyer by the name of William Boller. -
Reconstructing the Battle of 'Narawai (Moongalba)
Reconstructing the Battle of ’Narawai (Moongalba) Ray Kerkhove [email protected] Abstract The Battle of ’Narawai on North Stradbroke Island, and skirmishes that culminated in this event (c. 1827–32) have been sidelined in recent decades, based on the assumption that the event was more likely a massacre, and that sources are too conflicted to build a workable narrative. Here we utilise known and unexamined sources, and the untapped oral tradition and environ- mental knowledge of Stradbroke Island Aboriginal peoples, to reconstruct both the build-up and phases of the confrontation. We find that our primary sources for this incident ultimately derive from Aboriginal informants; together with current Aboriginal perspectives, these allow a more nuanced and Aboriginal- driven narrative than is normally possible for a frontier wars skirmish. It is argued that the Battle of ’Narawai was not a one-sided massacre but rather a well- planned operation by Aboriginal combatants, orchestrated to provide tactical advantages. We contend that the battle merged tactics of traditional pullen- pullen (inter-tribal tournaments) with strategies more suited to the demands of the frontier wars, and that it was perceived as a victory by Aboriginal Stradbroke Islanders. Introduction Twenty years ago, Chilla Bullbeck called for the violent incidents within Australia’s frontier wars to be better memorialized.1 More recently, Raynald Lemelin has urged historians to develop Indigenous-based narratives concerning these events, to atone for the relative absence of this perspective.2 Subsequently, there have been cooper- ative studies with Aboriginal families, aimed at providing more nuanced detail. A good example is Heather Burke’s spatial reconstruction of the Rufus River incidents (1841). -

GST) Overseas AUD $110.00 This edited volume represents the first book- length study of the history of research on Australian Aboriginal languages, and collects together 18 original papers on a wide variety of topics, spanning the period from first settlement to the present day. The introduction sets the scene for the book by presenting an overview of the history of histories of research on the languages of Australia, and identifying some of the major issues in Aboriginal linguistic historiography as well as directions for future investigations. Part 1 presents three detailed investigations of the history of work on particular languages and regions. The eight papers of Part 2 study and re- evaluate the contributions of particular individuals, most of who are somewhat marginal or have been marginalised in Aboriginal linguistics. Part 3 consists of six studies specific linguistic topics: sign language research, language revival, pidgins and creoles, fieldwork, Fr. Schmidt’s work on personal pronouns, and the discovery that Australia was a multilingual continent. Overall, the volume presents two major challenges to Australianist orthodoxy. First, the papers challenge the typically anachronistic approaches to the history of Aboriginal linguistics, and reveal the need to examine previous research in the context of their times — and the advantages of doing so to contemporary understanding and language documentation.
