Saku Export 2019
SAKU BREWERY EXPORT PORTFOLIO A guide to the Estonian brewery and its beverages ESTONIA Refreshing drinks from pure nature stonia is a small country situated in the upper right E corner of the European Union. Our neighbours are Finland to the north, Sweden to the west, the other Baltic states to the south and Russia to the east. We feel closest in spirit to the Scandinavian countries through our national identity and Nordic climate. Estonia has a small population and its population density is quite low compared to that of Western Europe, which is why we have a lot of pure, untouched nature. About half of the country’s territory is covered with forests and bogs. The other half is mostly used for agricultural purposes; one tenth of this half is covered with densely populated areas. Our extensive agricultural background gives us a strong advantage in being a considerable player in the field of producing beer and other drinks. Brewing beer from cereals and distilling spirits have been our traditional industries for centuries. ESTONIANS A distinctive nation with distinctive tastes ith a population of a bit more than 1 million people, Estonia is one of W the least populated countries in the European Union and has enjoyed independence for just less than a hundred years. Nevertheless, as a nation, we have existed for many thousands of years, being dominated by Denmark, Germany, Sweden and Russia at different times. We have managed to preserve our language, culture and our distinctive national identity throughout all these eras. When it comes to Estonian food culture, we can’t say that Estonian cuisine is something extraordinary. -

Transcending 'Cold Intimacies' in Veiko Õunpuu's Works
BALTIC SCREEN MEDIA REVIEW 2016 / VOLUME 4 / ARTICLE Article Transcending ‘Cold Intimacies’ in Veiko Õunpuu’s Works EVA NÄRIPEA, National Archives of Estonia, Estonian Academy of Arts; email: [email protected] EWA MAZIERSKA, University of Central Lancashire, United Kingdom; email: [email protected] 60 DOI: 10.1515/bsmr-2017-0004 BALTIC SCREEN MEDIA REVIEW 2016 / VOLUME 4 / ARTICLE ABSTRACT This article examines five films by Veiko Õunpuu, Estonia’s most renowned contemporary director – Empty (Tühirand, Estonia, 2006), Autumn Ball (Sügis- ball, Estonia, 2007), Temptations of St Tony (Püha Tõnu kiusamine, Estonia/Finland/Sweden, 2009), Free Range: Ballad on Approving of the World (Free Range: ballaad maailma heakskiitmisest, Estonia, 2013) and Roukli (Estonia, 2015), focusing on his representations of neoliberalism and especially its effect on the emotional and intimate lives of the characters. We argue that the characters of his films typically reject the conventional romance promoted by neoliberal discourses, including Hollywood cinema, yet this does not make them happy, but disoriented and restless. The repudiation of ‘emotional capitalism’ also pertains to the way Õunpuu’s films are conceived and executed. Most importantly, he resists the conventions of Hollywood cinema, including a classical script and happy ending, and also sets and shoots his films in peripheral places. Our main theoretical framework is the concept of ‘emotional capitalism’ as elaborated by Eva Illouz. INTRODUCTION heakskiitmisest, Estonia, 2013) and Roukli Veiko Õunpuu has been directing films (Estonia, 2015). To our knowledge, this is for a decade, rising from an unknown the first attempt to discuss Õunpuu’s filmic ‘amateur’ to become an internationally oeuvre in its entirety. -
Subjectivity-Inducing Mechanisms in Contemporary Estonian Art Film
BALTIC SCREEN MEDIA REVIEW 2014 / VOLUME 2 / ARTICLE Article Darkness on Screen: Subjectivity-Inducing Mechanisms in Contemporary Estonian Art Film MARTIN OJA, Tallinn University Baltic Film and Media School, Estonia; email: [email protected] 76 DOI: 10.1515/bsmr-2015-0016 BALTIC SCREEN MEDIA REVIEW 2014 / VOLUME 2 / ARTICLE ABSTRACT The main purpose of the article is to bring more clarity to the concept of art fi lm, shedding light on the mechanisms of subjective reception and evaluating the presence of subjectivity-inducing segments as the grounds for defi ning art fi lm. The second aim is to take a fresh look at the little- discussed Estonian art cinema, drawing on a framework of cognitive fi lm studies in order to analyse its borders and characteristics. I will evaluate the use of darkness as a device for creating meaning, both independently of and combined with other visual or auditory devices. The dark screen, although not always a major factor in the creation of subjectivity, accompanies the core problem both directly and metaphorically: what happens to the viewer when external information is absent? I will look at the subjectiv- ity-inducing devices in the fi lms of two Estonian directors, Sulev Keedus and Veiko Õunpuu. For the theoretical back- ground, I rely mostly on Torben Grodal’s idea about the subjective mode as a main characteristic of art fi lm, and the disruption of character simulation as the basis for the fi lm viewer’s subjectivity. For Estonian cinema, the last two decades Additionally, considering the context of spe- has been a time of seeking its identity and cifi c fi lm types, we can observe the strong continuously recreating its language, which international position of independent Esto- has been characterised by a renewal of its nian animation. -
Eesti Film Estonian Film 2000-2006
