Moreover, a substan- tial number of contemporary scholarly works have erased the thin line between material evidence and its interpretation. As a consequence, the architectural remains of Polish Romanesque edifices are often considered the basis for wider comparative research. Meanwhile, fragmentarily preserved structures of Romanesque buildings have allowed scholars to conduct research on their origins and models, but they have rarely provided enough information for spatial recon- structions of them. This means that one might investigate the process of transposing patterns from the Holy Roman Empire to Poland instead of the influence of Polish masons’ lodges on each other. Therefore, this paper has two aims.     All in the family: creating a Carolingian genealogy in the eleventh century* Sarah Greer The genre of genealogical texts experienced a transformation across the tenth century. Genealogical writing had always been a part of the Judeo-Christian tradition, but the vast majority of extant genealogies from the continent before the year 1000 are preserved in narrative form, a literary account of the progression from one generation to another. There were plenty of biblical models for this kind of genealogy; the book of Genesis is explicitly structured as a genealogy tracing the generations that descended from Adam and Eve down to Joseph.1 Early medieval authors could directly imitate this biblical structure: the opening sections of Thegan’s Deeds of Louis the Pious, for example, traced the begetting of Charlemagne from St Arnulf; in England, Asser provided a similarly shaped presentation of the genealogia of King Alfred.2 In the late tenth/early eleventh century, however, secular genealogical texts witnessed an explosion of interest. Genealogies of kings began to make their way into narrative historiographical texts with much greater regularity, shaping the way that those histories themselves were structured.3 The number of textual genealogies that were written down increased exponentially and began to move outside of the royal family to include genealogies of noble families in the West Frankish kingdoms and Lotharingia.4 Perhaps most remarkable though, is that these narrative genealogies began – for the first time – to be supplemented by new diagrammatic forms. The first extant genealogical tables of royal and noble families that we possess date from exactly this period, the late tenth and eleventh centuries.5 The earliest forms of these diagrams were relatively plain.

Embora tivessem sido adquiridos vários conjuntos de flautas de bisel por instituições eclesiásticas ao longo desse período, coincidindo temporalmente com a representação na iconografia religiosa, grande parte das obras vocais sacras do século XVI não nos elucida sobre a utilização específica destes instrumentos. Dada a escassez de documentação com informação acerca do uso das flautas de bisel, várias questões persistem até à actualidade entre os músicos que procuram definir as suas escolhas informadas para a prática interpretativa. Este artigo apresenta alguns resultados da pesquisa sobre o papel assumido pelas flautas na prática musical sacra em catedrais e igrejas em Espanha, durante os séculos XVI e XVII. Através da síntese e análise dos dados arquivísticos relativamente à compra, reparação e posse de flautas de bisel, às características de alguns desses instrumentos, a contratação e actividade dos músicos que os tocavam, e detalhes da prática interpretativa que remetem especificamente para estes instrumentos. Este artigo aborda também o tópico do repertório disponível nas catedrais e igrejas espanholas que possuem registo da sua actividade e, especificamente, da música que integra as colecções para instrumentos de sopro.

Keith Putt, Ph.D. July 20 Wed Leipzig – Wittenberg Professor of Theology and Professor of Philosophy This morning we will drive to Wittenberg to visit Luther House, a UNESCO Religion, Messiah College Samford University World Heritage Site that boasts the world’s largest museum on Reformation history. Once an Augustinian monastery, the Luther House was home to Martin Luther and his family for many years. Next, we will visit the Castle Church, where Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door. Today, guests can find the 95 Theses engraved on massive bronze doors erected in memory of the act that sparked the Reformation. Our final visit will be to St. Mary’s Town Church, the “Mother Church of the Reformation.” This church is the city’s oldest building, and more importantly, it witnessed Luther’s marriage to Katharina von Bora in 1525, as well as the baptism of all their children. Stay in Leipzig. July 21 Thu Erfurt After breakfast at the hotel, we will drive to Erfurt to visit the Augustinian Monastery that Luther joined on July 17, 1505, making it one of the most important Luther sites in Germany. Then we will walk through the winding streets of the old city to Merchants’ Bridge and on to the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Severus Church next to it. We will also see the Merchants’ Bridge, one of Erfurt’s main landmarks.
