Secondary Literature 360 7 ABSTRACT This study examines some of the plague sermons of German Catholic preachers during the sixteenth century, the era of the Reformation. It takes the question, "What was preached?" and applies it to a hitherto neglected genre of sources to investigate how Catholic preachers responded to a recurring, pre-Reformation crisis—plague—and how they interpreted that crisis during an era of revolutionary religious change. Special attention is given to the themes of astrology and the causes of plague, interpretations of epidemic disease in terms of divine wrath, plague prevention and social discipline. By comparing some of the Catholic plague sermons with those of their Protestant counterparts, similarities emerge to reveal a shared "Catholic" tradition, just as differences become apparent that reflect many of the debates between the confessions in sixteenth-century Germany. The theme of Catholic preaching and the German Reformation itself, however, has received little attention in the field, despite the fact that scholars have begun to devote much research and exposition to Protestant sermons during the period. Contrary to common opinion—^that Catholics failed to measure up to their evangelical counterparts in the pulpits—^this study also sketches some of the contours of Catholic preaching during the 8 first three decades of the Reformation: major preachers, the sources, and some of the themes they emphasized. Conceived as both a thesis and as an outline for further research, it is argued here that the Catholic response fi-om the pulpits was of greater scope and higher quality than has hitherto been assumed. 9 INTRODUCTION In Frankfurt an der Oder, Gertrand Fischer had been a vibrant and. healthy young woman. Until 1536. Then, according to the city's Lutheran preacher, Andreas Ebert, she suddenly became "weak in the head" {im haupt schwach),^ a diagnosis connoting something between depression and madness in the fluid medical vocabulary of sixteenth-century Germany." A kind citizen took her in and Gertrand began to improve, until "she became possessed with that enemy of truth, Satan." Portier, Ph.D. In its analysis of mystical body of Christ theology in the twentieth century, this dissertation identifies three major streams of mystical body theology operative in the early part of the century: the Roman, the German-Romantic, and the French-Social- Liturgical. Delineating these three streams of mystical body theology sheds light on the diversity of scholarly positions concerning the heritage of mystical body theology, on its mid twentieth-century recession, as well as on Pope Pius XII’s 1943 encyclical, Mystici Corporis Christi, which enshrined “mystical body of Christ” in Catholic magisterial teaching. Further, it links the work of Virgil Michel and Louis-Marie Chauvet, two scholars remote from each other on several fronts, in the long, winding French stream.

    Balthasar Hubmaier and the Authority of the Church Fathers ANDREW P. KLAGER In Anabaptist historical scholarship, the reluctance to investigate the authority of the church fathers for individual sixteenth-century Anabaptist leaders does not appear to be intentional. Indeed, more pressing issues of a historiographical and even apologetical nature have been a justifiable priority, 1 and soon this provisional Anabaptist vision was augmented by studies assessing the possibility of various medieval chronological antecedents. 2 However, in response to Kenneth Davis’ important study, Anabaptism and Asceticism , Peter Erb rightly observed back in 1976 that “. one must not fail to review the abiding influence of the Fathers . [whose] monitions were much more familiar to our sixteenth-century ancestors than they are to us.” 3 Over thirty years later, the Anabaptist community still awaits its first published comprehensive study of the reception of the church fathers among Anabaptist leaders in the sixteenth century. 4 A natural place to start, however, is the only doctor of theology in the Anabaptist movement, Balthasar Hubmaier. In the final analysis, it becomes evident that Hubmaier does view the church fathers as authoritative, contextually understood, for some theological issues that were important to him, notably his anthropology and understanding of the freedom of the will, while he acknowledged the value of the church fathers for the corollary of free will, that is, believers’ baptism, and this for apologetico-historical purposes. This authority, however, cannot be confused with an untested, blind conformity to prescribed precepts because such a definition of authority did not exist in the sixteenth-century, even among the strongest Historical Papers 2008: Canadian Society of Church History 134 Balthasar Hubmaier admirers of the fathers.

ABSTRACT This study examines Tertullian’s references to the New Testament outside the Gospels, in order to determine whether he was citing from a Greek or Latin copy of these writings. A new collection of these references was undertaken and is explained in the Appendix. The conclusion of the analysis is that Tertullian was quoting the New Testament writings using Greek exemplars and translating anew in most instances. Tertullian was one of the first Christians to have undertaken such translation work. It is proposed that Tertullian was participating in and influenced by a broad cultural-linguistic movement called the Second Sophistic. Latin writers like Cicero, Quintilian, Varro, and Apuleius were also participants, and their translation of Greek works into Latin likely formed Tertullian to become a literary translator.

ARMIN SIEDLECKI FEB 24 - JULY 7, 2017 THE IMAGE OF A FRACTURED CHURCH AT 500 YEARS Five hundred years ago, on October 31, 1517, Martin Luther published his Ninety-Five Theses, a series of statements and proposals about the power of indulgences and the nature of repentance, forgiveness and salvation. Originally intended for academic debate, the document quickly gained popularity, garnering praise and condemnation alike, and is generally seen as the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. This exhibit presents the context of Martin Luther’s Theses, the role of indulgences in sixteenth century religious life and the use of disputations in theological education. Shown also are the early responses to Luther’s theses by both his supporters and his opponents, the impact of Luther’s Reformation, including the iconic legacy of Luther’s actions as well as current attempts by Catholics and Protestants to find common ground. Case 1: Indulgences In Catholic teaching, indulgences do not effect the forgiveness of sins but rather serve to reduce the punishment for sins that have already been forgiven. The sale of indulgences was initially intended to defray the cost of building the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome and was understood as a work of charity, because it provided monetary support for the church.     The Catholic Luther, Then & Now by Mickey L. Mattox n the anniversary year of Martin Luther’s 95 Teses, the “Luther Year,” it is important both to look back, and to look ahead. In what follows, I ofer frst an admittedly nostalgic retrospective on the reception of Luther amongI Roman Catholics. I will focus on the years just before and the couple of decades just after the Second Vatican Council, which met 1962-1965. I will speak very briefy about the prospects for a renewal of the Catholic reception of Luther today. I have been teaching Martin Luther at a Catholic university for almost 15 years now. My attempt to look ahead will draw on my experience teaching Luther to my Marquette students, as well as my work with both Catholics and Lutherans interested in his life and legacy. First the nostalgia. It is tempting to speak of the decades just before and just after Vatican II as the golden age of Catholic Luther research. We historians are wary of such generalizations, but a good case can be made for it. Catholic scholars interested in Luther were emboldened by the hopeful ecumenical stance adopted at Vatican II. Te years spanning roughly 1965 to 2000 were the real heyday of Catholic Luther research. But momentum for this research had been building for nearly a century beforehand. Teologies of ressourcement, as they were known, called for a return to the biblical and patristic sources of Christian thought in order to break free from the allegedly confning categories of modern Catholic thought. Developed frst by such nineteenth century fgures as Johan Adam Mhler and extended in the work of such twentieth century greats as Henri de Lubac and Yves Congar, this nouvelle theologie brought new and more ecumenically open possibilities to Catholic theology.

Later he proved an astute businessman and politician, serving nine terms as mayor ofNijmegen. As his eldest son, Peter received the best education available, first at the local Latin school, then at a nearby boarding establishment, and finally at the University of Cologne. Cologne was a natural choice, even though the university had fallen on evil days, for the Rhine !jnked it to Nijmegen, and Jakob Kanijs had business connections there. Among staunch Catholics such as the Kani;s family, C0- logne was renowned, as the German Rome, filled with old churches and relics of.the saints. Jakob entrusted his son to two outstanding priests, Andrew Herll and Nicholas van Esche, who introduced their fifteen-year-old charge to the Dutch and Rhenish spirituality of the late Middle Ages.
