Oversteegen December 2017 L1 PROSODY ATTRITION AMONG SPANISH-ENGLISH BILINGUALS Abstract The process of losing or changing the first language (L1) as a result of acquiring a second language (L2) is called L1 attrition. This phenomenon has been researched in many linguistic areas, yet a relatively underexposed research area is that on prosody (i.e., the rhythmic and melodic patterns that determine, for example, intonation, rhythm and stress placement). The current study investigated whether prosodic L1 attrition occurred in the speech of Sofía Vergara, a Colombian Spanish-English bilingual who has been living and working in an L2 environment for approximately two decades. A semi-automatic acoustic analysis was conducted to determine whether vowel reduction (i.e., producing unstressed vowels with a shorter duration and a different vowel quality than stressed vowels) occurred in her L1 Spanish speech to a greater extent than in the speech of Spanish monolinguals, as measured in earlier studies. The results from this analysis show that vowel reduction did occur in her L1 speech: the unstressed Spanish /a/, /i/ and /o/ vowels were significantly reduced in duration, and the unstressed /a/ and /e/ showed significant differences in vowel quality vis-à-vis stressed vowels. However, vowel reduction did not occur to a greater extent than in the speech of monolingual Spanish speakers. -

This phenomenon is analyzed in two different but complementary studies and perspectives, each of which contributes to a better understanding of the sociolinguistic factors that constrain its variation, as well as the social meanings of this feature in Argentina. Study 1 investigates whether position in the intonational phrase (IP), vowel concordance, and social class and gender condition pretonic vowel lengthening from informal conversations with native speakers (n=20). -

A typology of stress in Spanish non-verbs Mark Gibson Universidad de Navarra [email protected] Abstract This article discusses the topic of stress in Spanish and its relationship to a higher metrical category called the foot. A general typology couched in the theoretic architecture of Optimality Theory is provided. I argue and illustrate that all stress patterns in Spanish non-verbs can be justified by a ranking schema of constraints which first govern the shape of metrical feet, and later determine the alignment of these feet to the syllable. In the disyllabic token pato ‘duck’, [pa.to], for example, primary stress falls on the [a], denoted by the application of the acute accent mark «´ » [p´a.to]. Some words may also contain secondary stress which is exclusive to the phonetic level. Consider the word mariposa ‘butterfly’. Apart from primary stress, which applies over the penultimate vowel [o], this word also contains secondary stress over the first vowel [a], depicted using a grave accent mark «` », [m`a.Ri.p´o.sa]1. -

However, the role of amplitude changes in the speech signal is more controversial. In particular, the conflicting results of spectral tilt as a correlate of stress have been attributed to the effects of vowel reduction. We examined the stress correlates of duration, overall intensity and spectral tilt in Catalan and Spanish in both accented and unaccented contexts while controlling for formant frequency differences between morphologically corresponding vowels in stressed and unstressed environments by comparing vowels that maintain the same quality across stress contexts with those that do not. Duration was a consistent stress correlate in all vowels in both languages, regardless of their formant frequency differences across stress contexts and of the absence of pitch accents. In fact, stress- related formant frequency differences between corresponding vowels amplify the duration cues to the stress contrast. On the other hand, the use speakers made of intensity was not as pervasive as that of duration. Specifically, changes in spectral tilt were significant only in Catalan and in those vowels that alternate a more open and peripheral realization in stressed syllables with a mid-central realization in unstressed syllables, indicating that spectral tilt is related to the formant frequency differences linked to the centralization processes rather than to the stress contrast. -

Perception and Production of Spanish Lexical Stress by Spanish Heritage Speakers and English L2 Learners of Spanish Ji-Young Kim 1. Introduction In the literature on second language phonology, numerous studies have investigated the influence of the speech sounds from the first language (L1) to the second language (L2) (Flege et al., 1995; Flege et al., 1999; Kuhl et al., 2003), while relatively little research has been done in the opposite direction, i.e., the influence from the L2 to the L1. Thus, the present study explores a possible influence from the L2 to the L1 by focusing on heritage speakers in the United States (US).1 It is of interest whether heritage speakers, who are more dominant in English (L2; majority language) than their heritage language (L1; minority language), have their heritage language influenced by their English. The present study also examines whether heritage speakers show similar patterns in their perception and production of the heritage language. Previous studies support that language-specific patterns emerge in speech perception prior to speech production (Imada et al., 2006; Kuhl et al., 2008; Moore & Guan, 2001; Perani et al., 2003). Although heritage speakers have been exposed to the heritage language from infancy, given that the heritage language is spoken far less frequently than it is heard (Hakimzadeh & Cohn, 2007; Kim, 2010), a discrepancy between these two domains may be found. Focusing on heritage speakers of Spanish and their perception and production of Spanish lexical stress, this study investigates whether heritage speakers of Spanish are able to perceive stress contrasts in Spanish (e.g., páso ‘I pass’ vs. -

This dissertation was made entirely with Free Software. 4 Abstract Perception of novel phonetic contrasts in a second language has been stud- ied extensively, but suprasegmentals have seen relatively little attention even though difficulties at this level can strongly impact comprehension. Available studies suggest that the perception of segmental and supraseg- mental categories are subject to similar factors, but evidence is not en- tirely conclusive. Additionally, studies focusing on the perception of lexical prominence have suggested that perception across languages with different accent types might be particularly problematic, meaning that these effects in particular would be independent of the direction of language learning. This dissertation explores both of these questions by studying theper- ception of lexical prominence by second-language learners in Spanish (a stress-accent language) and Japanese (a pitch-accent language). -

On the Phonetic Realization and Distribution of Costa Rican Rhotics
Filología y Lingüística XXXII (2): 291-309, 2006 ISSN: 0377-628X ON THE PHONETIC REALIZATION AND DISTRIBUTION OF COSTA RICAN RHOTICS Luz Marina Vásquez Carranza RESUMEN La muestra analizada del español producido por hablantes del Valle Central de Costa Rica evidencia que la vibrante múltiple ha sido substituida por una rótica asibilada, al tiempo que la vibrante simple también se asibila en tres contextos fonológicos: 1) en sílabas iniciales de más de una letra con la forma /tr/, 2) en posición intermedia en la palabra en sílabas iniciales complejas que aparecen después de una coronal sonora /l/ o /n/ y 3) en grupos de tipo /Cr/ en donde la rótica está en posición final, siempre presidiendo uno o más morfemas dependientes de clítico. La vibrante simple también evidencia asibilación al final de una frase. Se propone como posible explicación de tal asibilación de la vibrante múltiple la tendencia a nivel cros-lingüístico de reducir el proceso de articulación: en vez de enunciar la vibrante múltiple la cual requiere tensión controlada, precisa y sostenida del ápice de la lengua, se reduce la magnitud de movimiento en este lugar de articulación, resultando en una asibilación de la vibrante múltiple en todos los contextos. Por su parte, la asibilación de la vibrante simple se explica en términos de co-articulación. Palabras clave: róticas, dialectos costarricenses, fonología, fonética, asibilación. ABSTraCT The analysis of the Spanish data produced by speakers from the Costa Rican Central Valley evidenced that the trill has been substituted by an assibilated rhotic, while the tap also undergoes assibilation in three contexts: 1) in complex /tr/ onset clusters, 2) word-medially in complex onsets that come after a voiced coronal /l/ or /n/, and 3) in /rC/ clusters where the rhotic is in coda position, always before one or more bound clitic morphemes.
