Oversteegen December 2017 L1 PROSODY ATTRITION AMONG SPANISH-ENGLISH BILINGUALS Abstract The process of losing or changing the first language (L1) as a result of acquiring a second language (L2) is called L1 attrition. This phenomenon has been researched in many linguistic areas, yet a relatively underexposed research area is that on prosody (i.e., the rhythmic and melodic patterns that determine, for example, intonation, rhythm and stress placement). The current study investigated whether prosodic L1 attrition occurred in the speech of Sofía Vergara, a Colombian Spanish-English bilingual who has been living and working in an L2 environment for approximately two decades. A semi-automatic acoustic analysis was conducted to determine whether vowel reduction (i.e., producing unstressed vowels with a shorter duration and a different vowel quality than stressed vowels) occurred in her L1 Spanish speech to a greater extent than in the speech of Spanish monolinguals, as measured in earlier studies. The results from this analysis show that vowel reduction did occur in her L1 speech: the unstressed Spanish /a/, /i/ and /o/ vowels were significantly reduced in duration, and the unstressed /a/ and /e/ showed significant differences in vowel quality vis-à-vis stressed vowels. However, vowel reduction did not occur to a greater extent than in the speech of monolingual Spanish speakers. -

Sonderforschungsbereich Mehrsprachigkeit International Colloquium on Convergence and Divergence in Language Contact Situations 18–20 October 2007 University of Hamburg Research Centre on Multilingualism Welcome On behalf of our Research Centre on Multilingualism (Sonderforschungsbereich Mehrsprachigkeit), generously supported by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) and the University of Hamburg, we would like to welcome you all here in Hamburg. This colloquium deals with issues related to convergence and divergence in language contact situations, issues which had been rather neglected in the past but have received much more attention in recent years. Five speakers from different countries have kindly accepted our invitation to share their expertise with us by presenting their research related to the theme of this colloquium. (One colleague from the US fell seriously ill and deeply regrets not being able to join us. Unfortunately, another invited speak- er cancelled his talk only two weeks ago.) All the other presentations are re- ports from ongoing work in the (now altogether 18) research projects in our centre. We hope that the three conference days will be informative and stimulating for all of us, and that the colloquium will be remembered for both its friendly atmosphere and its lively, controversial discussions. The organising commit- tee has done its best to ensure that this meeting with renowned colleagues from abroad will be a good place to make new friends or reinforce long-stand- ing professional contacts. There will be many opportunities for doing that – during the coffee breaks and especially during the conference dinner at an ex- cellent French restaurant on Thursday evening. -

Dative Overmarking in Basque: Evidence of Spanish-Basque Convergence Jennifer Austin University of New Jersey, Rutgers. [email protected] Abstract This paper investigates a recent change in the grammar of spoken Basque which results in the substitution of dative case and agreement for absolutive case and agreement in marking animate, specific direct objects. I argue that this pattern of use is due to convergence between the feature matrix of the functional category AGR in Spanish and Basque. In contrast to previous studies which point to interface areas as the locus of syntactic convergence, I argue that this is a change affecting the core grammar of Basque. Furthermore, I suggest that the appearance of this case marking pattern in spoken Basque is probably attributable to recent changes in the demographics of Basque speakers and that its use is related to the degree of proficiency in each language of adult bilingual speakers. This phenomenon is analyzed in two different but complementary studies and perspectives, each of which contributes to a better understanding of the sociolinguistic factors that constrain its variation, as well as the social meanings of this feature in Argentina. Study 1 investigates whether position in the intonational phrase (IP), vowel concordance, and social class and gender condition pretonic vowel lengthening from informal conversations with native speakers (n=20). -

CHAPTER EIGHT ANGLICISMS The phenomenon of the anglicism in Canadian French is an ancient one: it goes all the way back to the earliest contacts in the Eighteenth century. It is inevitable that languages in contact will borrow from each other, and Canadian English has also borrowed extensively from Canadian French: words such as portage, lacrosse, cache, and prairie, borrowed originally from Canadian French, are now part of standard English, and known around the world. Marcel Juneau (1977:49) reports that he estimated that there are some 1000 words in the Dictionary of Canadianisms that are borrowings from Canadian French. Many of the anglicisms in Canadian French are immediately noticeable, especially those that replace items of standard French vocabulary; others are more subtle, such as the use of a French word or expression in an English way: année académique for année scolaire, for example. Still others may only be spotted by highly trained observers such as Jean Darbelnet, with an extensive linguistic background in both languages, and a vast knowledge of the difference between European and North American usages. Anglicisms are also considered a problem, because those that are not used by other speakers of French are not readily understood, and may thus lead to incomprehension and confusion. The problem has frequently been grossly exaggerated, however: studies of Canadian French have shown that average conversations heard on the street contain only about 1% of anglicisms. We have already seen that certain typical pronunciations — the laxing of high vowels in closed syllables — has been quite erroneously blamed on the influence of English, and many items of grammar and lexicon have been labelled anglicisms that are likewise not from English at all. -

Specific language contact phenomena in the Habsburg Empire and their possible utilization for teaching Czech as a foreign language in Austria1 Stefan Michael Newerkla ABSTRACT: Not only does pluricentric German display characteristic features of Standard Average European, but it also comprises several distinguishing features in various contact areas with Baltic, Finno-Ugrian and Slavic languages. Like isoglosses, which constitute certain dialect areas in dialectology, bundled language contact phenomena distinguish certain contact areas from others. A major language contact area in Central Europe — merely one out of several — is the contact zone which we can associate with the former centre of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with German, Hungarian, Czech and Slovak as its core languages as well as Polish, Slovene and others as its only partially involved peripheral languages. From this contact area, a micro-area emerged in Vienna and Eastern Austria that was particularly affected by the influence of Czech on German vice versa. This contribution illustrates how the latter language contact phenomena can fruitfully contribute to the process of teaching Czech as a foreign language in Austria. KEY WORDS: Austria, Czech language, German language, language contact, language teaching In present day Austria, there are seven officially recognized minority languages, i.e. the languages of the six autochthonous ethnic groups officially recognized by the Ethnic Groups Act (Volksgruppengesetz), actually a federal act on the legal status of ethnic groups in Austria dated 7th July 1976 (Bundesgesetz vom 7. 7. 1976 über die Rechtsstellung von Volksgruppen in Österreich), plus the Austrian Sign Language (Österreichische Gebärdensprache) with approximately 9,000 speakers. Several other languages of minorities living here also play an important role. -
A Typology of Stress in Spanish Non-Verbs
A typology of stress in Spanish non-verbs Mark Gibson Universidad de Navarra [email protected] Abstract This article discusses the topic of stress in Spanish and its relationship to a higher metrical category called the foot. A general typology couched in the theoretic architecture of Optimality Theory is provided. I argue and illustrate that all stress patterns in Spanish non-verbs can be justified by a ranking schema of constraints which first govern the shape of metrical feet, and later determine the alignment of these feet to the syllable. In the disyllabic token pato ‘duck’, [pa.to], for example, primary stress falls on the [a], denoted by the application of the acute accent mark «´ » [p´a.to]. Some words may also contain secondary stress which is exclusive to the phonetic level. Consider the word mariposa ‘butterfly’. Apart from primary stress, which applies over the penultimate vowel [o], this word also contains secondary stress over the first vowel [a], depicted using a grave accent mark «` », [m`a.Ri.p´o.sa]1. -
