A Reflection From Our Pastor
My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Most of my life I have worked with kids. I often asked them of their dreams for the future. I should admit that I helped quite a few youngsters to develop a dream and to work toward its realization. A couple of years ago, while working at the Cathedral of Saint John Berchmans in Shreveport, I was stunned by the answer of a sixth grade girl to my question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” “I want to be the President of our country,” she said without hesitation. We all have ideals or dreams to chase. Think of what Jesus said to his disciples: “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.” What do we consider to be the most valuable thing in life? It’s not uncommon to hear of someone who has worked very hard for a nice house and lots of possessions, and then doesn’t have the time to devote to family and loved ones. We’re likely to invest in what we see as valuable. How tempting it is to look at what the world sees as being valuable and making great sacrifices to have those things! The world spends a lot of money on ads. Unsuspecting people quickly fall for these advertised articles and spend their hard earned money for something they later regret! How easy it is to be duped by the advertisers. We can find out that we don’t have more or better friends because of the clothes we wear. We don’t become more respected or glamorous because we smoke or drink. Expensive cars or real estate don’t necessarily make us happier or more fulfilled either. As we try to satisfy our many hungers, we find that the things which promise to do so aren’t very effective at all. So we are asked to find out what we value most in life.
