Scioneaux, Jr. (7/26) real soldier from Guipuzcua, Spain, Saint Ignatius of Loyola became a Sunday S.G. 8:30 a.m. soldier of Christ. His greatest achievement is the foundation of the Society (7/27) 11:00 a.m. Joycelyn Straub A of Jesus (Jesuits) who today have over 500 universities and colleges, 30,000 Joseph & Edwina Estrada members, and teach over 200,000 students each year. The secret of his success: The Tuesday 7:30 a.m. James J. Ryan love of Jesus in the Eucharist! (7/29) Youngest of 12 children born to a noble family, he was a page, received a military Wednesday 7:30 a.m. Candy Elston education, and was a soldier. Wounded by a cannonball at the siege of Pampeluna, (7/30) he was left partially crippled for life. In recuperation the only books he had were Thursday 7:30 a.m. The Golden Legend , a collection of lives of saints, and Life of Christ . These books, and (7/31) contemplation, changed him. On recovery he vowed chastity, hung his sword before Friday 7:30 a.m. the altar of the Virgin of Montserrat, and donned pilgrim’s robes. (8/01) Ignatius was a mystic centering his life on the foundations of Christianity—the Sanctuary Lamp Trinity, Christ, the Eucharist —best expressed in the Jesuit motto, ad majorem Dei Ad honorem * gloriam . All was guided by love of the Church and obedience to the Holy Father. He was an implacable foe of Protestantism. Yet the seeds of ecumenism may be the Jesuit influence in our diocese. found in his words: “Great care must be taken to show forth orthodox truth in such Prayer Requests a way that if any heretics happen to be present they may have an example of charity Remember in prayer those who are sick, that they may receive the and Christian moderation. No hard words should be used nor any sort of contempt healing that they need whether it be physical, mental, or spiritual. for their errors be shown.” Michael Acurio, Ermelinda Amaral, James Bascle, May Bascle, John Boatman, Last Week’s Collections and Attendance Margaret Broussard, Jeanine Chamberlin, William Cole, Joe Cramer, Edward Culliton, Kyle Dempsey, Isabelle Feliciano, Robert Gentry, Joe Greene, Melony Weekend of 20 July 2008 Gordon, Tracy Hendricks, Benée Irwin, Susan Jagot, George Johnson, Shannon Johnson, Ever Jones, Ronnie Lafitte, Doris Messina, Camden Orr, Joann Sampson, Gary Smith, Jean Schneider, Katie Lynn Shokley, Becky Sterba, Bryan Mary, Queen of Peace White, Ferrel Zeller, and all those who care for and love them. Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time “The angels will . separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace,” A Reflection From Our Pastor My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Most of my life I have worked with kids. I often asked them of their dreams for the future. I should admit that I helped quite a few youngsters to develop a dream and to work toward its realization. A couple of years ago, while working at the Cathedral of Saint John Berchmans in Shreveport, I was stunned by the answer of a sixth grade girl to my question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” “I want to be the President of our country,” she said without hesitation. We all have ideals or dreams to chase. Think of what Jesus said to his disciples: “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.” What do we consider to be the most valuable thing in life? It’s not uncommon to hear of someone who has worked very hard for a nice house and lots of possessions, and then doesn’t have the time to devote to family and loved ones. We’re likely to invest in what we see as valuable. How tempting it is to look at what the world sees as being valuable and making great sacrifices to have those things! The world spends a lot of money on ads. Unsuspecting people quickly fall for these advertised articles and spend their hard earned money for something they later regret! How easy it is to be duped by the advertisers. We can find out that we don’t have more or better friends because of the clothes we wear. We don’t become more respected or glamorous because we smoke or drink. Expensive cars or real estate don’t necessarily make us happier or more fulfilled either. As we try to satisfy our many hungers, we find that the things which promise to do so aren’t very effective at all. So we are asked to find out what we value most in life. What value do I attach to God’s love and my ability to love others? Do we have answers? Fr. Joseph Ampatt Fr.
