It was later hidden from the Moors in a cave, where it was rediscovered in 880 AD. According to the legend of the discovery, which was first recorded in the 13th century, the statue was discovered by shepherds. They saw a bright light and heard heavenly music that eventually led them to the grotto and the statue. The Bishop of Manresa, present at the discovery, suggested that it be moved to Manresa, but the small statue was discovered to be so heavy it could not be lifted. Thus the Virgin had indicated her will to stay on Montserrat to be venerated there. Many miracles were reported through the intercession of the Virgin Mary at Montserrat. Shortly after his conversion, Ignatius of Loyola was determined to join the army of Christ. In pilgrim’s garb, Ignatius kept an all-night vigil before Our Lady. He placed his sword before the Mother of God, stood, knelt, sang hymns, and prayed with the other pilgrims. Ignatius began his new life in God under the inspiration of the Black Madonna and Child Jesus A historian wrote: "In all ages the sinful, the suffering, the sorrowful, have laid their woes at the feet of Our Lady of Montserrat, and none have ever gone away unheard or unaided." Let us bring our own needs and prayers and place them at the feet of our Lady to present to her Son. REFLECTION FAITH FORMATION As we continue living in the realities of our time, let us learn from the example of St Benedict and his monastic communities as to how we might encounter God more and more in our daily lives. Cultivate Silence St. Benedict wrote, “Speaking and teaching are the master’s task; the disciple is to be silent and listen” (RB 6:8).
