(2) 1/21/19 Martin Luther King Jr. - SCHOOL IS CLOSED. (3) 1/28/19 Princess Bustier: Cut out canvas, fashion fabric, and lining using pattern with seam allowance. Cut out bias strip for bottom edge (can be fashion fabric or lining). Cut out fusible hair canvas using interfacing pattern. Draw in seam allowances for all canvas pieces using a pencil- NO PENS, it will bleed. Fuse interfacing to canvas pieces and topstitch to secure hair canvas. Homework: Bring boning to next class. (4) 2/4/19 Princess Bustier: Sew canvas bustier pieces together, sew fashion fabric bustier pieces together, and sew lining bustier pieces together. Determine strategic boning placement and sew in boning to canvas layer. Homework: Bring twill tape to next class. Complete all steps from today for next class. Any students not prepared for next step in next class will have points deducted. (5) 2/11/19 Princess Bustier: Sew canvas, fashion fabric, and lining together and secure with twill tape. Edge-stitch to prevent roll out. Press bias strip in half, sew to bottom edge of bustier- only to canvas and fashion fabric layers, and catchstitch bias strip in place. Sew CB close. (6) 2/18/19 President’s Day- SCHOOL IS CLOSED (7) 2/25/19 Princess Bustier: Sew lining close to bias strip. Punch holes and set grommets at CB. Lace up bustier and submit finished bustier on skirt/pant hanger by end of class. Due: PRINCESS BUSTIER is due at end of class. Homework: Bring all fabric and patterns for bra cup bustier. Bra cup bustier pattern must be cut out! (8) 3/4/19 Bra Cup Bustier: Cut out fashion fabric (English netting or powerstretch), bra cup fashion fabric (taffeta or dupioni), bra cup padding (batting), and bias strips (taffeta or dupioni)-must be true bias, no exceptions. Make bias strips for the entire bustier. Homework: Finish making ALL bias strips and keep in a Ziploc bag- make sure to label each set so that you don’t use the incorrect strip for each step. Bring boning bias strips to next class. Complete all steps from today for next class. Any students not prepared for next step in next class will have points deducted. 3/11/1-3/17 Spring Break- SCHOOL IS CLOSED (9) 3/18/19 Bra Cup Bustier: Sew bustier bodice together. Raw edges should be face outside. Trim seam allowance and sew bias strip on each seam line to cover raw edges. Cut and insert boning into bustier. Homework: Complete all steps from today for next class. Any students not prepared for next step in next class will have points deducted. (10) 3/25/19 Bra Cup Bustier: Sew bra cup pieces together and topstitch a design to secure batting in place. Attach bra cup to bodice with raw edges facing outwards. Trim excess raw edges and cover with bias strip. How to create an underwire using a wire hanger. Insert underwire into bias strip under bra cups. Homework: Complete all steps from today for next class. Any students not prepared for next step in next class will have points deducted. (11) 4/1/19 Bra Cup Bustier: Shorten zipper to specific and sew to CB. Cover raw edges and zipper with bias strips and sew bias strip to top and bottom of bustier. Add hook/eye at CB top. Due: BRA CUP BUSTIER is due at end of class. Homework: Bring fabric and patterns for historical bustier. Historical bustier pattern must be cut out! (12) 4/8/19 Historical Bustier: Cut out fashion fabric, lining, hair canvas (interfacing), and bias strips using fashion fabric or lining. Fuse hair canvas to fashion fabric, sew CB fashion fabric and lining together and press. Homework: Complete all steps from today for next class. Any students not prepared for next step in next class will have points deducted. (13) 4/15/19 Historical Bustier: Continue working on CB piece and topstitch from edge. Mark a second and third line that is also top stitched. Add eyelets and boning to CB pieces. How to cut boning and add boning caps or finish with fabric and Teflon tape combination demo. (14) 4/22/19 Historical Bustier: Mark spacing and sew casings to insert busk for both CF pieces. Homework: Complete all steps from today for next class. Homework: Measure, cut, and seal boning for all remaining seam allowances. Complete all steps from today for next class. Any students not prepared for next step in next class will have points deducted. (16) 5/6/19 Historical Bustier: Sew the CF pieces to CB pieces by connecting side seams together. Cover with lining and topstitch or stitch in the ditch from the right side to secure in Sew bias strips to top and bottom similar to how the bra cup. How to properly lace up historical bustier. Course & Program Information Course Instruction in the skills and techniques for creating a boned bodice. Production of strapless from Description fashion and theatrical sources through the pattern-making and construction process. Prerequisites FSHD 1324 Ready-To-Wear Construction, FSHD 1328 Flat Pattern Design I Course 1. Compile a resource notebook of pictures of strapless bodices, bodices incorporating bra-cup Learning construction, boned bodices and bodices with historical reference. Outcome 2. Create a sample book of boning application techniques and lacing eyelet samples. 3. Create strapless pattern slopers in two styles: a princess-seamed sloper and a bra-cup with seaming. 4. Create a historically cut bodice sloper. 5. Adapt these slopers for custom fit. 6. Draft a bustier pattern, fit a muslin, and complete sample garments for two strapless bodices and one historical bodice. Lab As a student, you are required a total of 80 hours of class meeting during the semester. A total of 32 hours is Requirements for lecture/demonstration which will occur at the beginning of each new lesson plan. The remaining 48 hours are for lab which will be used for supervised work on class projects. Fashion 1. Experiment with lines, colors, fabrics, patterns, textures, and styles in design and creation of original Design fashion design. Ability to produce projects to simulate a real-life industry situation. Learning 2. Apply critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills to a variety of fashion design problems. Outcomes 3. Communicate design concepts at various stages of development using the design process, sewing skills, drawing skills and/or appropriate software. 4. Instructor’s 1. Demos are shown at the beginning of class and will only be shown once. Course 2. Remainder of class time is used to complete daily assignments. This will allow you to practice new Specific techniques and be able to ask your professor or TA for guidance. Information 3. Daily class assignments are due at the end of class. They must be correct(ed) to receive a daily grade. 4. Homework is due at the start of class. They will be returned graded during class or start of next class. 5. Quizzes and exams will be graded and returned the following week for review. Student 1. You are expected to arrive and sign-in to class on time each class period. Conduct 2. Have all necessary supplies needed for the day and be ready to go by start of demos. 3. Read the board for daily class itinerary to know what we are covering in class that day. 4. Participate in class demos and discussions by taking notes & asking topic relevant questions. 5. Be courteous to you classmates, professor, and TA by not disrupting the class. This includes: loud talking, phone ringing during class (especially during demos- put on silence), loud music/videos, take a fellow classmates sewing machine or sewing space, and sew during demos. 6. The professor or TA may ask you to leave the class at anytime if you display disruptive behavior. If the situation should escalate, you will be escorted out by campus police. Electronic Students must obtain consent from the instructor in order to audio or video record any portion of classroom Devices time. Any use of such devices for purposes other than student learning is strictly prohibited. If an instructor perceives such use as disruptive and/or inappropriate, the instructor has the right to ask the student to terminate such use. Course Assignments and Grading Policies Assignments Descriptions Project Value Princess A. Students will learn how to construct a structured stand alone bustier and will be 25% Seam Bustier introduced to typical bustier and corseting materials such as: canvas, hair canvas, boning, grommet, and lacing. Bra Cup A. Students will learn how to construct an understructure bustier that is traditionally worn 25% Bustier underneath outer garments such as gowns or blouses. B. Students will be introduced to: power stretch/English netting, and apply a separating zipper. Historical A. Students will learn how to construct a traditional corset and be introduced to new 25% Bustier techniques such as self-casing. (Corset) B. Students will be introduced to: spiral boning (how to cut and cap), eyelets, and busk applications. Class A. Students must use the time in class to work on project. Failure to Attend./Particip. 25% Attendance/ Absences Grade show up or not having necessary supplies will result in an “F” for 0 100 Participation the day. 1 95 B. Students are responsible for signing in at the beginning of each 2 80 3 50 class period. Over 3 0 C. Students are considered late if arriving after the starting time. After 15 minutes of starting time, students will be counted absent. Three tardies will accumulate to one absence. D. Students may be dropped from courses for absences that exceed 12.5% of the total semester hours, usually equated to more than 4 absences in a 2-day per week class and more than 2 absences in a 1 day per week class. E. If assigned projects are not turned in by the end of class, it will have an automatic 15 points deduction. Your assignments are still late if you show up to class and leave early. You will be counted absent as well. Students with excessive absences can be dropped from this course without noticed. Basically, USE YOUR CLASS TIME WISELY! Grading Scale A. In Progress (IP) is given only in certain developmental courses. The student must re-enroll to receive credit. COM (Completed) is given in non-credit and continuing education courses. To compute grade point average (GPA), divide the total grade points by the total number of semester hours attempted. The grades “IP”, “W”, “AUD”, “COM” and “I” do not affect GPA. C. Incompletes: The grade of "I" (Incomplete) is conditional. A student receiving an "I" must arrange with the instructor to complete the course work within six months of the end of the incomplete term. After the deadline, the "I" becomes an "F." Upon completion of the coursework, the grade will be entered as I/grade on the student transcript. All "I"s must be changed to grades prior to graduation. D. Make-Up Policy: Students are responsible for turning in all work that is assigned. Work that is turned in late will automatically have 15 points deduction for each class period that it is overdue. After 2 class periods, no late work will be accepted. If you are absent on examination days, it it’s your responsibility to schedule a timeframe with your professor to make-up the missed exam.

Class Rules General Rules 1. Sign-in each class. Late students need to put the time in which they are arriving. 2. Come prepared and ready to go at class start time. 3. No food or drinks in the classroom. Students are only allowed a close cap water bottle 4. Return all borrowed school provided supplies to the locker when you’re done using the item. 5. Ask your professor or teaching assistant (TA) FIRST to borrow items from the cart and return all items borrowed. Please notify professor or TA that you have returned the item. 6. Table room is limited, only necessary supplies for class maybe on table. 7. Each student will oversee their sewing area. Clean assigned area including cutting table and machine. Points will be deducted from class participation grade if area is not maintained. 8. Don’t throw trash on the floor; put them in the trash cans. Includes: paper, thread, & fabric! 9. Select and use the same machine for each class, unless instructed otherwise by a professor or TA. If something is wrong with the sewing machine, report it to the professor immediately, so that you are is not held responsible. 10. Do not leave bobbin and bobbin case. You are responsible for keeping up with them. 11. Only the student enrolled in the current ongoing class may be allowed in the classroom. This means no children, parents, spouse and etc. 12. No talking on cell phone during class hours. They must be turned off or put on silence. If there is an emergency, please make prior arrangements with the instructor before class begins. Safety Rules 1. NEVER put your pins in your mouth! This can lead to gum infections and inadvertent swallowing. 2. Keep your eyes on what you are working on. It prevents mistakes on projects and harmful accidents. 3. If you need to adjust anything within the needle area, take foot off the pedal & place it on the floor. 4. Turn off your sewing machine completely when you are changing needles or presser foots. 5. Practice keeping your fingers as far as possible from the moving needle. If needed: the closer to the needle, the slower you will run the machine. 6. When sewing, keep fabric out in front of the machine and to the side of the presser foot. 7. Keep scissors closed and near the middle of the table when not in use. 8. Always place the iron on the silicone plate, face-down when not in use. Do not leave it anywhere else on the ironing board or it with burn.
