Often in the rush “just to get finished” with a task, we do not give the moment its proper due. Good portraits of any kind require the photographer and the subject to work together to achieve the desired look. With all the advancements in digital photography today along with the touch- up software available, the ability to create a good portrait is now greatly enhanced. Technology alone, however, can never replace the human subject and thus, it is important to be prepared for your senior portrait day to ensure good results. Come prepared with a good attitude and ENJOY the process. Do not let minor stresses and concerns spoil the day. A relaxed, happy demeanor comes through in a photo and embracing and enjoying the process will aid in helping you look your best. The photo stations will have a tablet so you can view the portraits as taken if desired. This will help yo u get yo ur best lo o k the first sessio n. Abstract This work explores norms of dress design by the use of post internet aesthetics in mens underwear. The exploration of underwear is based on methods formed to create a wider concept of how mens underwear could look like regarding shape, color, material and details. Explorations of stereotypical and significant elements of underwear such as graphics and logotypes has been reworked to create a graphical identity bound to a brand. This is made to contextualize the work aiming to present new options and variety in mens underwear rather than stating examples using symbols or stereotypic elements. In the making of the examples for this work the process goes front and back from digital to physical using different media to create compositions of color, graphic designs and outlines using transfer printer, digital print, and laser cutting machine. That was a t-shirt!!! We need tops! While cotton tops are easy to make, knit tops are the most versatile due to the forgiving stretch. Because of the challenges in working with knit fabric, updating a t-shirt is the perfect compromise. Our goal is to have someone look at our top and say “that was a t-shirt?!” All hemlines need to be removed and restyled and the neckline needs to be either ruffled (size small and some medium) or trimmed. Here are some guidelines that we are looking for. Simply sewing a decorative stitch or zigzag over the existing hemline (sleeves and bottom hem) does not make visual changes to the t-shirt. Please cut off the existing hemline and if you like, you can make it shorter. If you have a serger, you can finish the edge prior to hemming but because the knit does not ravel it is not necessary. You also do not need to turn over the edge prior to hemming. Sleeves Match the sleeves and cut off both hems at the same time. You can cut straight or at an angle and make it a cap sleeve Use a decorative stitch for the hemming, variegated thread looks great! Use either white or black thread in the bottom as variegated thread is expensive. Remember to sew on the right side with your finger on the bottom feeling for the fabric edge. Watch for those sales and coupons!! Sulky blendables, 30 weight, 100% cotton is very nice to use. If you hem with a straight stitch, make it a little longer perhaps 3.0 and add some elastic to make it gathered at the hem edge. -

164 The dress and the self: how dress styles express identities Authors Courtney Nicole Chrimes, Rosy Boardman, Helen McCormick, Gianpaolo Vignali The University of Manchester, UK Corresponding author [email protected] Keywords Clothing preference, self-concept, dress and identity, consumption and identity Abstract Clothing one’s body denotes a clear intentional behaviour. Literature highlights that females purchase certain products and clothing styles to achieve their desired body shape or to hide or flatter areas of their body. Additionally, it has been found that clothing is a tool that assists consumers in achieving an ideal appearance and has the ability to alter one’s mood, enabling them to either camouflage or bolster their self-confidence. This suggests that there is a link between an individual’s body perception and their clothing preferences, and that clothing choice reflects the individual. Building on previous studies, this paper investigates how women express their identity through different styles of dresses, exploring what a specific type of dress can say about an individual’s perception of self. A mixed methods study was conducted involving: 1. A quantitative online questionnaire, which established females’ preferred style of dress and 2. Qualitative semi-structured interviews which explored how different styles of dresses create different identities. A convenience sample of 263 (phase 1) and 15 (phase 2) UK females aged 18-34 was obtained. The questionnaire data was analysed through descriptive statistics and the qualitative interviews were analysed through a process of coding. Findings indicate that different styles of dresses are used to express different types of identity. -
