(1) 1/14/19 Introduction to Bustier Construction: Go over course outline, syllabus, and supplies list. Preparation tips: ordering supplies ahead of time, do not wait till last minute to order. Suggested places for bustier specific supplies: Amazon, http://www.corsetsupply.com/ “Dragontown”, or https://corsetmaking.com/. Trace patterns for princess bustier, bra cup bustier, and historical bustier. Homework: Cut out patterns for princess bustier. Make pattern envelope for bra cup bustier, historical bustier, and reference bustier. Buy supplies for princess bustier and began ordering online only items. (2) 1/21/19 Martin Luther King Jr. - SCHOOL IS CLOSED. (3) 1/28/19 Princess Bustier: Cut out canvas, fashion fabric, and lining using pattern with seam allowance. Cut out bias strip for bottom edge (can be fashion fabric or lining). Cut out fusible hair canvas using interfacing pattern. Draw in seam allowances for all canvas pieces using a pencil- NO PENS, it will bleed. Fuse interfacing to canvas pieces and topstitch to secure hair canvas. Homework: Bring boning to next class. Complete all steps from today for next class. Any students not prepared for next step in next class will have points deducted. (4) 2/4/19 Princess Bustier: Sew canvas bustier pieces together, sew fashion fabric bustier pieces together, and sew lining bustier pieces together. Determine strategic boning placement and sew in boning to canvas layer. Homework: Bring twill tape to next class. Complete all steps from today for next class. Any students not prepared for next step in next class will have points deducted. (5) 2/11/19 Princess Bustier: Sew canvas, fashion fabric, and lining together and secure with twill tape. Edge-stitch to prevent roll out. Press bias strip in half, sew to bottom edge of bustier- only to canvas and fashion fabric layers, and catchstitch bias strip in place. Sew CB close. Homework: Bring grommets and lace to next class. Complete all steps from today for next class. Any students not prepared for next step in next class will have points deducted. (6) 2/18/19 President’s Day- SCHOOL IS CLOSED (7) 2/25/19 Princess Bustier: Sew lining close to bias strip. Punch holes and set grommets at CB. Lace up bustier and submit finished bustier on skirt/pant hanger by end of class. Due: PRINCESS BUSTIER is due at end of class. Homework: Bring all fabric and patterns for bra cup bustier. Bra cup bustier pattern must be cut out! (8) 3/4/19 Bra Cup Bustier: Cut out bodice fashion fabric (English netting or powerstretch), bra cup fashion fabric (taffeta or dupioni), bra cup padding (batting), and bias strips (taffeta or dupioni)-must be true bias, no exceptions. Make bias strips for the entire bustier. Homework: Finish making ALL bias strips and keep in a Ziploc bag- make sure to label each set so that you don’t use the incorrect strip for each step. Bring boning bias strips to next class. Complete all steps from today for next class. Any students not prepared for next step in next class will have points deducted. 3/11/1-3/17 Spring Break- SCHOOL IS CLOSED (9) 3/18/19 Bra Cup Bustier: Sew bustier bodice together. Raw edges should be face outside. Trim seam allowance and sew bias strip on each seam line to cover raw edges. Cut and insert boning into bustier. Homework: Complete all steps from today for next class. Any students not prepared for next step in next class will have points deducted. (10) 3/25/19 Bra Cup Bustier: Sew bra cup pieces together and topstitch a design to secure batting in place. Attach bra cup to bodice with raw edges facing outwards. Trim excess raw edges and cover with bias strip. How to create an underwire using a wire hanger. Insert underwire into bias strip under bra cups. Homework: Complete all steps from today for next class. Any students not prepared for next step in next class will have points deducted. (11) 4/1/19 Bra Cup Bustier: Shorten zipper to specific and sew to CB. Cover raw edges and zipper with bias strips and sew bias strip to top and bottom of bustier. Add hook/eye at CB top. Due: BRA CUP BUSTIER is due at end of class. Homework: Bring fabric and patterns for historical bustier. Historical bustier pattern must be cut out! (12) 4/8/19 Historical Bustier: Cut out fashion fabric, lining, hair canvas (interfacing), and bias strips using fashion fabric or lining. Fuse hair canvas to fashion fabric, sew CB fashion fabric and lining together and press. Homework: Complete all steps from today for next class. Any students not prepared for next step in next class will have points deducted. (13) 4/15/19 Historical Bustier: Continue working on CB piece and topstitch from edge. Mark a second and third line that is also top stitched. Add eyelets and boning to CB pieces. How to cut boning and add boning caps or finish with fabric and Teflon tape combination demo. Homework: Complete all steps from today for next class. Any students not prepared for next step in next class will have points deducted. Begin cutting boning and sealing edges for CB casings. (14) 4/22/19 Historical Bustier: Mark spacing and sew casings to insert busk for both CF pieces. Homework: Complete all steps from today for next class. Any students not prepared for next step in next class will have points deducted. (15) 4/29/19 Historical Bustier: Stitch remaining bustier pieces to CFs and CBs leaving the side seam open. Homework: Measure, cut, and seal boning for all remaining seam allowances. Complete all steps from today for next class. Any students not prepared for next step in next class will have points deducted. (16) 5/6/19 Historical Bustier: Sew the CF pieces to CB pieces by connecting side seams together. Cover with lining and topstitch or stitch in the ditch from the right side to secure in Sew bias strips to top and bottom similar to how the bra cup. How to properly lace up historical bustier. Due: HISTORICAL BUSTIER is due at end of class. No late work is accepted. Course & Program Information Course Instruction in the skills and techniques for creating a boned bodice. Production of strapless bodices from Description fashion and theatrical sources through the pattern-making and construction process. Prerequisites FSHD 1324 Ready-To-Wear Construction, FSHD 1328 Flat Pattern Design I Course 1. Compile a resource notebook of pictures of strapless bodices, bodices incorporating bra-cup Learning construction, boned bodices and bodices with historical reference. Outcome 2. Create a sample book of boning application techniques and lacing eyelet samples. 3. Create strapless pattern slopers in two styles: a princess-seamed sloper and a bra-cup with corset seaming. 4. Create a historically cut bodice sloper. 5. Adapt these slopers for custom fit. 6. Draft a bustier pattern, fit a muslin, and complete sample garments for two strapless bodices and one historical bodice. Lab As a student, you are required a total of 80 hours of class meeting during the semester. A total of 32 hours is Requirements for lecture/demonstration which will occur at the beginning of each new lesson plan. The remaining 48 hours are for lab which will be used for supervised work on class projects. Fashion 1. Experiment with lines, colors, fabrics, patterns, textures, and styles in design and creation of original Design fashion design. Ability to produce projects to simulate a real-life industry situation. Learning 2. Apply critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills to a variety of fashion design problems. Outcomes 3. Communicate design concepts at various stages of development using the design process, sewing skills, drawing skills and/or appropriate software. 4. Demonstrate punctuality and recognize the necessity of working long hours to meet deadlines by prioritizing tasks and effective use of time.
