A PEEK INSIDE A PUMPKIN YELLOW CORSET By FRC Team This under bust corset (FRC 2013.05.001), dated 1900, is made of a rich pumpkin coloured woven jacquard cotton with a motif of staggered flower May 2, 2016 buds and stems (Note 1). The corset is lavishly trimmed with lace threaded with a similar yellow toned satin ribbon along the busk, and top and bottom edges. The centre front closes with metal slot and studs that are unmarked. The spoon busk measures 12 ¾ inches, with hand-stitching visible at the openings for surrounding each of the slots of the busk. The closed waist measures 23 inches, and there is notable discolouration along the panels along the waistline of the corset, as well as signs of wear including small stains and discolouration. Looking closely, there appears to have been four separate remnants of stitching resembling the shape of a dart, located respectively on each side of the front and back of the corset. There are 12 pairs of metal eyelets on the back to lace the corset; however the original laces are not present. The corset is lightly boned with 5 flexible bones placed directly beside each other, on each side of the corset, as well as one bone on either side of the eyelets at the back. One of the bones located on the back pokes out of the casing at revealing what appears to be ¼ inch flat white metal bone. The garment appears to have been sewn by machine; however the stitching is noticeably lacking fluidity and accuracy.

Free and open to all, the exhibition showcases the ingeniousness and creativity of French lingerie which, for over a century and a half, has been worn by millions of women worldwide. The exhibition is an immersion into the collections of eleven of the most prestigious French brands: AUBADE, BARBARA, CHANTELLE, EMPREINTE, IMPLICITE, LISE CHARMEL, LOU, LOUISA BRACQ, MAISON LEJABY, PASSIONATA and SIMONE PÉRÈLE. With both elegance and playfulness, the story of an exceptional craft unfolds in a space devoted to contemporary art. The heart of this historic exhibition takes place in the Game Room of the Sagamore Hotel. Beginning with the first corsets of the 1880’s, the presentation documents the custom-made creations of the 1930’s, showcases the lingerie of the 1950’s that was the first to use nylon, and culminates with the widespread use of Lycra® in the 1980’s, an epic era of forms and fabrics. This section focuses on contemporary and future creations; including the Lingerie Francaise sponsored competition’s winning entry by Salima Abes, a recent graduate from the university ESMOD Paris. An exclusive collection of approximately one hundred pieces will be exhibited, all of them emblematic of a technique, textile, and/or fashion innovation. A selection of landmark pieces will trace both the history of intimacy and the narrative of women’s liberation.

Both ordinances define nudity and forbid a person from appearing in a pubic state of nudity. Ludwig is an exotic dancer at The Garter Belt, Inc. d/b/a John’s Hot Spot (f/k/a Legg’s Lounge) located in Van Buren. The Garter Belt is owned by John Hamilton. Ludwig seeks monetary, declaratory and injunctive relief. She essentially claims the nudity ordinances are overbroad. As will be explained, this is one of several lawsuits challenging the nudity ordinances. Before the Court is Van Buren’s motion for summary judgment on the grounds of res judicata. In the 21st century, a brassiere is no more worn for function as it is for fashion. In order to understand the evolution of function to fashion of a brassiere, it is necessary to account for its historical journey from the beginning to where it is today. This thesis paper, titled The Evolution of Brassiere in the 20th Century will explore the history of brassiere in the last 100 years. While the paper will briefly discuss the pre-birth of the brassiere during Minoan times, French Revolution and early feminist movements, it will largely focus on historical accounts after the 1900s.

    ST GEORGE’S CHAPEL ARCHIVES & CHAPTER LIBRARY Research guides No.1 The Order of the Garter Foundation and composition The Most Noble Order of the Garter, the oldest surviving Order of Chivalry in the world, was founded by Edward III in or just before 1348. St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, became and remains the spiritual home of the Order and holds the annual Service of Thanksgiving on Garter Day which is attended by the Sovereign and Companions of the Order. The origins of the Order’s blue garter and motto, ‘Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense’ (Shame on Him Who Thinks Evil of It), are uncertain. The date of the foundation of the Order of the Garter is a subject of historiographical controversy, largely due to the absence of early records of the Order. The French chronicler Froissart, writing between 1370 and 1400 and drawing upon the account of the English ecclesiastic Adam of Murimuth, claimed that the foundation of the Order coincided with the feast held by Edward III at Windsor Castle in January or February of 1344. At this feast, according to Murimuth, Edward had declared an intention to establish a Round Table of three hundred knights ‘in the same manner and estate as the Lord Arthur, formerly King of England’. It is now widely believed that Froissart wrongly conflated the events of the feast held in 1344 with the actual foundation of the Order of the Garter, which occurred later in the 1340s and possibly coincided with the establishment of the College of St George, Windsor, in 1348.

Holding tight to a mission statement that stands first and foremost to “empower women,” and a slogan stating the brand is one to “Inspire, Empower and Indulge,” the franchise “helps customers to feel sexy, bold and powerful” (limitedbrands.com, 2010). This is being accomplished through the distribution of 400 million catalogs to homes each year, a constant array of television commercials all hours of the day, a CBS primetime show viewed by 100 million, and 1,500 mall storefront displays in the U.S. alone (VS Annual Report, 2009). And to the tune of 5 billion dollars every year, women are buying into the envelope-pushing “empowerment” sold by Victoria’s Secret, the nation’s premiere lingerie retailer. Due to Victoria’s Secret’s ubiquitous media presence and radical transformation from a modest, Victorian-era boutique to a sexed-up pop-culture phenomenon in the last decade, a critical reading of VS’s media texts is highly warranted.
