THE PONTIFICAL NORTH AMERICAN COLLEGE and the Class of 2015 Invite You on this Pilgrimage to Attend our Ordination to the Diaconate ROME September 26 - October 5, 2014 ROME & ASSISI PILGRIMAGE Friday, September 26, 2014: Our Pilgrimage to the Eternal City begins as we depart from various US Cities (see airports listed below) for our overnight flight to Rome, Italy. Meals will be served on-board. Saturday, September 27, 2014: Upon arrival into Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Airport we will be greeted by a Canterbury Tours Escort who will remain with us throughout the pilgrimage to assure a wonderful experience. We transfer via deluxe motor coach to our hotel in Central Rome. The excitement builds as we arrive into the Eternal City and take part in a walking tour of St. Peter’s Square to get us acquainted with this magnificent city, followed by lunch just a few steps from the Vatican at the Da Roberto’s restaurant on the Borgo Pio. After our leisurely noon-day meal, we set off on our deluxe motor coach for a guided tour of Ancient Rome including the Coliseum and the Roman Forum. Back to the hotel for rest and relaxation and dinner on your own. (L) Sunday, September 28, 2014: Wake up to a full buffet breakfast at the hotel. Leisurely morning followed by a full day of Roman sightseeing. We start with a visit to St. Peter’s Square to participate in the Angelus with the Holy Father. Free time for lunch followed by a visit to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls (the burial place of St. Paul, one of the five patriarchal Basilicas and the second largest church in Rome). Next, we visit the Patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major (which was built after a miraculous event and embellished to celebrate the ecumenical council of Ephesus). Late afternoon arrival at the Pontifical North American College for Sunday Mass and Reception followed by dinner. (B/D) Monday, September 29, 2014: Breakfast at the hotel followed by a guided tour of the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica. There is the possibility of taking a “Scavi Tour” of the excavations below St. Peter’s Basilica (pending confirmation.) (B) Tuesday, September 30, 2014: Following breakfast we take an excursion to visit Assisi, home of the Franciscan Order. Upon arrival in Assisi, we visit the Basilica of St. Francis (famous for its Giotto frescoes of the life of St. Francis) where our chaplain will celebrate Holy Mass for us. Next, we visit and pray at the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli and the Porziuncola (where Francis of Assisi recognized his vocation in 1208 and where he died in October 1226). Our tour of Assisi will also include a visit to the Church of Santa Chiara which is dedicated to St. Clare, the foundress of the Order of the Poor Clare’s and who followed in the footsteps of St. Francis. (B/L/D) Wednesday, October 1, 2014: Following breakfast, we depart early for St. Peter’s Square to participate in the Papal Audience (subject to the Pope’s schedule). After lunch, we depart for a tour of the Catacombs of San Callisto (where hundreds of early Christians were buried). Leisure time at the hotel before we set out for an evening prayer service (TBA) followed by dinner. (B/D) Thursday, October 2, 2014: Following breakfast, we depart for St. Peter’s Square to participate in the Diaconate Ordination (PNAC Class of 2015) at the Altar of the Chair at St. Peter’s Basilica. Following the Diaconate Ordination we transfer to the Pontifical North American College for a Reception. We then return to our hotel for leisure time to shop, enjoy a gelato or cappuccino, or to explore the beauty of “The Eternal City” on our own. (B/Light Lunch Reception) Friday, October 3, 2014: This morning we will have the opportunity to participate in the Masses of Thanksgiving at various locations (TBD). Enjoy a leisurely afternoon on your own. Canterbury Tours will offer an optional add-on guided tour of the churches in the center of Rome, including the Church of the Gesù (the mother church of the Society of Jesus and tomb of St. Ignatius), Santa Maria sopra Minerva (where St. Catherine of Siena is buried and contains many beautiful pieces of art), and the Pantheon. Dinner on your own. (B) Saturday, October 4, 2014: Today we will visit the Basilica of St. John Lateran (the cathedral Church of Rome) which stands next to the stairs taken from Pilate’s Praetorium. We then visit the Church of Santa Croce where many of the relics of the Passion of Christ are honored. Afternoon at leisure to roam Rome on your own. You may want to visit the Villa Borghese, or to wander along the Via del Corso or the Via Condotti, where you will find designer shops with famous names, stopping by the famous Spanish Steps. Tonight we gather at the hotel for a transfer to the Pontifical North American College for a final Vigil Mass and Reception followed by a Farewell Banquet Dinner at the Restaurant Cecilia Metella. (B/D) Sunday, October 5, 2014: With a renewed sense of pilgrimage and an invigorated love of our Catholic faith, we board our plane for our flight home. OPTIONAL TRIP EXTENSION: Orvieto, Florence, St. Anthony of Padua and Venice Sunday, October 5, 2014: Farewell to Rome! Early departure for Florence. En- route we will visit the hill top city of Orvieto and the beautiful Cathedral which is the home of a Eucharistic miracle dating back to 1263. Following lunch we con- tinue onward to Florence, cradle of the Renaissance for a guided tour. Overnight Florence. (B/D) Monday, October 6, 2014: Morning at leisure in Florence. You may want to visit the Academy of Fine Arts to view Michel- angelo’s “David” as well as other works of art. We continue northward to visit Padua and the basilica where Saint Anthony's body is interred. Overnight Padua. (B/D) Tuesday, October 7, 2014: Venice all day! Today we'll visit St. Marks Square, Basilica, the Bridge of Sighs, and the Palace of the Doges will highlight our tour of this mystical city, the rest of the day is at your leisure. Overnight Padua. (B/D) Wednesday, October 8, 2014: Bid farewell to Italy. We board our plane from Venice Airport for our return flight home. OPTIONAL TRIP EXTENSION: Our Lady of the Rosary, Sorrento & the Almalfi Coast Sunday, October 5, 2014: Farewell to Rome! Early departure for the beautiful coastline of Sorrento and the Almalfi Coast. Before checking into our hotel we will visit the buried ruins of Pompeii and participate in Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pompei Italy. Overnight Sorrento. (B/D) Monday, October 6, 2014: Depart Sorrento by boat as we cruise along the rocky Almalfi Coast. Our destination is Posi- tano which looks onto a small bay and has a pleasant beach backed by mountain buttresses. The houses are built on terraces among gardens. We'll visit and participate in Mass at St. Maria Assunta. Overnight Sorrento. (B/D) Tuesday, October 7, 2014: Full day at leisure. You may want to ferry over to the romantic Isle of Capri. Enchantment abounds as you explore leisurely on our own the narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and fashionable shops that abound on this idyllic isle. Overnight Sorrento. (B/D) Wednesday, October 8, 2014: We head to the Airport for our return flight home.
