Take a walking city tour to see the art and architecture of this Umbrian town. Visit the Church of St. Clare to see her tomb and the San Damiano Cross, and church of San Rufino where St. Francis and St. Clare were baptized. Make a special visit to the tomb of recently beatified Bl. Carlo Acutis who died on October 12, 2006. This modern-day saint spurs on the call to evangelization in young Catholics and is an example for all. Late afternoon free to explore this charming village with its quaint shops, churches, and squares. Dinner as a group and overnight in Assisi. Day 4: Tuesday, September 28 - Assisi • SCAVI • Rome Early departure this morning for Rome. Upon arrival, go to St. Peter’s Basilica and take a tour the SCAVI (excavations) beneath, ending at the tomb of St. Peter. Celebrate Mass at the nearby Chiesa Nuovo, St. Philip Neri’s altar, followed by time for prayer. Enjoy a group dinner tonight, then check into your religious house and overnight in Rome. Day 5: Wednesday, September 29 - Papal Audience • Ancient Rome • NAC Vigil Depart early this morning to attend the Papal Audience (pending the pope’s schedule) in St. Peter’s Square. Enjoy a pizza lunch, followed by a tour of Ancient Rome, the Coliseum (inside visit), Capitol Hill, the Roman Forum, and Circus Maximus. End with Mass at the Church of the Gesu. Day 6: Thursday, September 30 - Diaconate Ordination • Christian Rome This morning attend the Mass and Diaconate Ordination of Alex Wyvill at St. Peter’s Basilica, followed by a reception at the North American College. Later this afternoon visit the churches of Christian Rome, the basilicas of St. John Lateran and the Holy Steps, and St. Mary Major followed by time for prayer. Dinner and evening at leisure and overnight in Rome. Day 7: Friday, October 1 - Vatican Museums • St. Peter’s • Free Afternoon This morning celebrate Mass at Spirito in Sassia. On the street outside, a stranger cast a cursory glance in all directions, and finally told us that we had taken the wrong exit from the train station. Little did we realise then, that even upon finding our apartment, it would take us twice as long to settle in. Late evening sunlight slanted in through lace curtains in the studio apartment that was designed to resemble a cottage. The skylight had its own remote control that would gladden the heart of the Quartermaster from the James Bond franchise. There was a sparsely equipped kitchenette with some supplies left behind by previous residents. I opened the bathroom door, and gazed fondly at the feature that had swung our decision in favour of this apartment—a washing machine. Before setting out to buy supplies, we decided to get the washing going, only to discover that the supplies in the apartment included all manner of seasoning and two kilos of salt, but no detergent. Every supermarket we visited that evening sold detergent in quantities that were ridiculously disproportionate to the single load of laundry we intended to run.

    !21 CHAPTER I The Formation of the Missionary Gaspar’s Youth The Servant of God was born on January 6, 1786 and was baptized in the parochial church of San Martino ai Monti on the following day. On that occasion, he was given the names of the Holy Magi since the solemnity of the Epiphany was being celebrated. I received this information from the Servant of God himself during our familiar conversations. The Servant of God’s parents were Antonio Del Bufalo and Annunziata Quartieroni. I likewise learned from conversation with the father of the Servant of God as well as from him that at first Antonio was engaged in work in the fields but later, when his income was running short, he applied as a cook in service to the most excellent Altieri house. The Del Bufalos were upright people and were endowed sufficiently for their own maintenance as well as that of the family. They had two sons: one was named Luigi who married the upright young lady Paolina Castellini and were the parents of a daughter whose name was Luigia. The other son, our Servant of God. Luigi and Gaspar’s sister-in-law, as well as his father and mother, are now deceased. As far as I know, the aforementioned parents were full of faith, piety and other virtues made know to me not only by the Servant of God, honoring his father and mother, but also by Monsignor [Antonio] Santelli who was the confessor of his mother and a close friend of the Del Bufalo family.

    National Gallery of Art NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART ONLINE EDITIONS Italian Paintings of the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Centuries Master of Saint Francis Umbrian, active third quarter 13th century BIOGRAPHY Active, so far we know, solely for Franciscan churches and perhaps himself a member of the order, this anonymous artist was first identified and his oeuvre reconstructed by Henry Thode (1885).[1] The name-piece of the group of works that Thode assembled is the panel with a full-length figure of Saint Francis in the museum of the basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi. Also assigned to this painter by Thode were five frescoes with stories from the legend of Saint Francis in the lower church of the same basilica; the painted crucifix in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Perugia, dated 1272; and other works, not all of which are now recognized as works by this master. Subsequently this nucleus was first whittled down by the elimination of reattributed works, and then augmented with various other paintings, such as the fragmentary fresco (Madonna and Child with an Angel ) in the lower church of the basilica in Assisi; although the authorship of the latter is disputed, it should probably be considered the result of the painter’s first stylistic phase and as having been executed in connection with the burial of Cardinal Pietro di Barro in 1252.[2] The characteristic features of the style of the Master of Saint Francis, an artist probably trained in Umbria, are rapid and energetic drawing, brilliant color, and the effort to capture the character and state of mind of the personages represented, who express themselves with vivid and elegant gestures.

    John Murphy Critical Approaches to Art History Fall 05 Pozzo’s Perspective: Visual Hagiography in the Church of St. Ignatius, Rome The Order of the Society Jesus was among the foremost creators and commissioners of Counter-Reformation Baroque art. Founded in 1534 by St. Ignatius of Loyola, the Jesuits came to be regarded as one of the most potent forces of the Counter-Reformation, due at least in part to the order’s high visibility through their worldwide network of building projects. Part of art history’s continuing fascination with the Jesuits involves the controversial search for a “Jesuit Style” of art, an approach to image production that is immediately identifiable as Jesuitical. Though a thorough discussion of the Jesuit style is outside the limits of this paper, the Jesuit worldview (including the Jesuit perception of the role of art) is central to interpreting how artists were employed in constructing Jesuit self-identity. Nowhere is this process of identity-construction more apparent than in The Church of St. Ignatius in Rome, built to celebrate both Ignatius and the active ministry of his order throughout the globe. Andrea Pozzo’s monumental ceiling fresco, The Worldwide Mission of the Society of Jesus (fig. 1), painted in the central nave of the church, exhibits a typical Baroque-era complexity. The fresco is visually opulent, filled with swirling figures, illusionist architecture, and an intricate, allegory-based iconography. The image is certainly hagiographical—Ignatius is shown ascending to heaven on a cloud, surrounded by celestial figures and beckoned by the figure Christ himself—but is it an example of coercive Jesuit propaganda or of a sincere religiosity derived from Pozzo’s close personal 2 association with the Jesuit order? Pozzo’s fresco proves that the two motives are not mutually exclusive.
