Sitting here now, writing this, I think how silly it is I’m even bothering, because it is truly impossible to tell you what inner tranquility you have given to me since I was old enough to understand what it is to be loved. You are the world to me. Everything I am, and anything I may become, I owe to you. The world you chose to give to me, the people you are, who you have become, and who you continue to be, truly leaves me flabbergasted. I have never really thought of you as anything but remarkable human beings who I enjoy spending time with. The fact that you are my parents is frankly laughable. By avoiding the study of fleas, I have instead had to navigate the deep blue waters of research into finding the causes, roots, and solutions to a social problem that has become figuratively as large as the mythical Moby Dick that my great-great uncle was in search of.

Abstract In the course of a development sociological analysis the question is asked, if violence in sports in the course of civilization process increases or decreases. The seeming contradiction between the thesis of decrease of violence in sports and the thesis of increase of violence in sports is solved by differentiating between expressive, pleasant, affective violence on one hand and instrumental, affectless, rational violence on the other. It can be seen that within long term development trends in society of increasing control of affects and monopolizing violence, ex- pressive violence in sports is more and more repressed, tamed, i.e. compared to earlier forms of sports expressive violence in sports today has decreased. On the other hand change of sports towards success orientation, increasing economical, political, and public significance of sports leads to an increase of instrumental violence in the sense of a consciously planned, aggressive rule violation in the interest of higher aims. In contrast to this an analysis of development of female sports shows - because of the change in power balance between sexes, the change of female behavior standards - that in female sports as well an increase of instrumental as of expressive violence can be noted in the sense of an ad- justment process to general social violence standards. Following the newest discussion on the problem of ’sports and vio- lence&dquo; one can distinguish between two apparent contradicting theses: 1. Aggression and violence can find a place in sports events and football games because of the social problems of the audience watching the competitions or games, which sometimes fall into the category of hooliganism. Turkey is one of the countries that should consider this problem to be a serious social problem. Even during 2014 and 2015, a relatively short period of time, there were significant hazardous acts committed by hooligans. In February 2014, one supporter was killed after a game between Liverpool and Arsenal in England; in March 2014, a game between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahce was left half-finished because of violent acts in the stadium that caused players in the pitch to believe that they could not leave stadium alive, although they finally left after a few hours; in another incident in March 2014, one supporter was killed after a game between Helsingborg and Djugarden in Sweden; in November 2014, one supporter was killed and 14 supporters were injured before the game between Atletico Madrid and Deportivo in Spain.

Well, when those adults who follow at least one sport are asked which two are the greatest sports stars of all time, basketball legend Michael Jordan comes in at number one followed by Tiger Woods at number two and the man who “built” a stadium, Babe Ruth comes in at number three. These are some of the results of The Harris Poll ® of 2,293 adults, of whom 1,494 follow at least one sport, surveyed online between October 5 and 12, 2009 by Harris Interactive ®. The man who called himself “the greatest”, boxer Mohammed Ali is number 4, while quarterback Brett Favre who has yet to stay retired is number five on the greatest sport star list. Next on the top ten are another quarterback, Joe Montana at number 6 and hockey legend, Wayne Gretzky at number 7. There is still another quarterback, Peyton Manning , tied for number 8 along with baseball’s Ted Williams. Finally, tied for number 10 are baseball’s Hank Aaron and basketball phenomenon LeBron James. This top ten list (actually 11 because of the tie for number 10) includes 3 baseball players, 3 football players and two basketball players.     FAN IDENTITY AND IDENTIFICATION DRIVERS - STOKING THE FLAMES OF THE PHOENIX By Markus Rühl A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Management Studies Victoria University of Wellington 2010 ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Fans are of highest importance for the financial success of sports clubs (van Leeuwen, Quick, & Daniel, 2002). However, the nature of fandom and the meaning that fans place upon their relationship with a sports club varies and different degrees of fandom exist (Wann & Branscombe, 1990). Whilst much research has been done on the assessment of fan identification, little work has contributed to its practical application. For example, for sport marketers to actively strengthen their fan base, more than a mere assessment of the identification level of their fans is necessary. It is suggested that knowledge about the underlying identification drivers of fans with different identification levels is needed to inform any managerial action. This research aims to enhance understanding about the relationship between the level of fan identification and the drivers of identification, and it does so, via a study of New Zealand‟s only professional football club Wellington Phoenix FC. A cross-sectional convenience sample of 517 Wellington Phoenix fans was surveyed using both online and researcher administered/respondent completed questionnaires. The Sports Spectator Identification Scale (Wann & Branscombe, 1993) was used to measure fan identification, and participants were categorized into five identification levels. Findings show that ten of 16 identification drivers are correlated with the identification level. Of particular interest are findings that indicate a mediating impact of the identification level on specific relationships.

    CHAPTER 2 Playing Center: The Triad of Violence in Men’s Sports In November 2000, newspapers reported that six high school football players in Yucca Valley, California, had been arrested on felony charges of false imprisonment, sexual battery, rape with a foreign object, and conspiracy. The crimes were allegedly perpetrated during a hazing rit- ual, when senior members of the football team “initiated” freshmen and sophomore members of the team.1 These days, we seem to hear story after story describing male athletes’ violent acts of ritualized hazing on athletic teams, acquaintance and gang rapes perpetrated against women, and verbal and physical abuse of girlfriends and spouses.2 Statements of shock and surprise routinely follow these stories. School officials and coaches, backed up by psychologists and other professionals, vow to develop better means of “weeding out the bad apples” in the future. A common working assumption in these cases is that the perpetrators of these kinds of violent acts are deviating from the norms of proper behav- ior in the school and on the athletic teams. As the Yucca Valley princi- pal put it in the wake of the charges against his students, “Some bad things are alleged to have happened. It’s unfortunate, because these things tend to eclipse all the good things we’re doing here.”3 Are male athletes more likely than nonathletes to engage in acts of violence off the field, or when some athletes assault others are we just more likely to notice it because of their high-profile public status?4 In this chapter, I will argue that we should not be surprised when we hear 27 28 – PLAYING CENTER of male athletes committing acts of off-the-field violence, whether sex- ual or otherwise.
