Michael Jordan Tops List of Greatest Sports Stars of All Time Tiger Woods and Babe Ruth Are Number 2 and 3 on List Press Contact: Alyssa Hall Harris Interactive, Inc. 212-539-9749 [email protected] Michael Jordan Tops List of Greatest Sports Stars of All Time Tiger Woods and Babe Ruth are number 2 and 3 on list New York, N.Y. — October 28, 2009 — The debates are legendary – who is the greatest baseball player of all time? Tiger versus Nicklaus? Well, when those adults who follow at least one sport are asked which two are the greatest sports stars of all time, basketball legend Michael Jordan comes in at number one followed by Tiger Woods at number two and the man who “built” a stadium, Babe Ruth comes in at number three. These are some of the results of The Harris Poll ® of 2,293 adults, of whom 1,494 follow at least one sport, surveyed online between October 5 and 12, 2009 by Harris Interactive ®. The man who called himself “the greatest”, boxer Mohammed Ali is number 4, while quarterback Brett Favre who has yet to stay retired is number five on the greatest sport star list. Next on the top ten are another quarterback, Joe Montana at number 6 and hockey legend, Wayne Gretzky at number 7. There is still another quarterback, Peyton Manning , tied for number 8 along with baseball’s Ted Williams. Finally, tied for number 10 are baseball’s Hank Aaron and basketball phenomenon LeBron James. This top ten list (actually 11 because of the tie for number 10) includes 3 baseball players, 3 football players and two basketball players. Greatest baseball player Each sport is different, so each sport has different players that are deemed the greatest. As the World Series gets underway, the New York Yankees can claim two of the top five greatest baseball players – number one, Babe Ruth and number five, Lou Gehrig. Sandwiched in between these two Yankee legends are Hank Aaron at number two, Willie Mays at number three and Ted Williams at number four. Greatest football player When it comes to greatest football player, number one on the list is someone who keeps trying to retire, but keeps staying in the game, Brett Favre. Next is running back and actor Jim Brown followed by 49ers quarterback Joe Montana at number three. Chicago Bears running back Walter “Sweetness” Peyton is number 4 on the greatest football player list and one of Joe Montana’s key receivers on the 49ers, Jerry Rice rounds out the top five. Greatest basketball player He’s number one on the overall list, so it’s no surprise that Michael Jordan is considered number one on the greatest basketball player list. The rivalry extends beyond the hard court as the Lakers star Magic Johnson and Celtics star Larry Bird come in next at number two and three respectively. Rounding out the top five greatest basketball stars are Wilt Chamberlain, who started his professional career with the Harlem Globetrotters at number 4 and Celtics’ great Bill Russell at number five. ©2009 Harris Interactive, Inc. All rights reserved. Greatest golfer For years, the debate has been Tiger Woods versus Jack Nicklaus. And, Tiger wins as he is considered the greatest golfer of all time followed by Jack at number two. The great Arnold Palmer is number three on the list followed by Phil Mickelson and then Bobby Jones at number 5. Greatest tennis player With the recent win at Wimbledon, Roger Federer became the all time Grand Slam winner with 15, beating Pete Sampras’ 14 wins. And, Federer is also considered the greatest tennis players of all time followed by Pete Sampras at number two. Jimmy Connors is number three and Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras’ greatest rival is number four on the list of greatest tennis players of all time. Rounding out the top five is Arthur Ashe. So what? While the debates may not yet be answered, these lists can begin new ones at the same time. One thing that is interesting to note is that these selections really represent players of all times, going back to the early 1900s with Babe Ruth. In fact, just four players on the overall greatest list are currently playing their respective sports. And, there are no current players on the greatest baseball player or greatest football player list. One great season can make someone “great,” so who knows what names may be added next year. Corso, Director, The Harris Poll Methodology This Harris Poll was conducted online within the United States October 5 and 12, 2009 among 2,293 adults (aged 18 and over) of whom 1,494 follow at least one sport. Figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, region and household income were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. Propensity score weighting was also used to adjust for respondents’ propensity to be online. All sample surveys and polls, whether or not they use probability sampling, are subject to multiple sources of error which are most often not possible to quantify or estimate, including sampling error, coverage error, error associated with nonresponse, error associated with question wording and response options, and post-survey weighting and adjustments. Therefore, Harris Interactive avoids the words “margin of error” as they are misleading. All that can be calculated are different possible sampling errors with different probabilities for pure, unweighted, random samples with 100% response rates. These are only theoretical because no published polls come close to this ideal. Respondents for this survey were selected from among those who have agreed to participate in Harris Interactive surveys. The data have been weighted to reflect the composition of the adult population. Because the sample is based on those who agreed to participate in the Harris Interactive panel, no estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated. These statements conform to the principles of disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls. Twenty-eight years ago Golden and Wasil (1987) presented the use of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for ranking outstanding sports records. Since then much has changed with respect to sports and sports records, the application and theory of the AHP, and the availability of the internet for accessing data. In this paper we revisit the ranking of outstanding sports records and build on past work, focusing on a comprehensive set of records from the four major American professional sports. We interviewed and corresponded with two sports experts and applied an AHP-based approach that features both the traditional pairwise comparison and the AHP rating method to elicit the necessary judgments from these experts. The most outstanding sports records are presented, discussed and compared to Golden and Wasil’s results from a quarter century earlier. • Top Sluggers and Their Home Run Breakdowns
Best of Baseball Prospectus: 1996-2011 Part 1: Offense 6 APRIL 22, 2004 : http://bbp.cx/a/2795 HANK AARON'S HOME COOKING Top Sluggers and Their Home Run Breakdowns Jay Jaffe One of the qualities that makes baseball unique is its embrace of non-standard playing surfaces. Football fields and basketball courts are always the same length, but no two outfields are created equal. As Jay Jaffe explains via a look at Barry Bonds and the all-time home run leaderboard, a player’s home park can have a significant effect on how often he goes yard. It's been a couple of weeks since the 30th anniversary of Hank Aaron's historic 715th home run and the accompanying tributes, but Barry Bonds' exploits tend to keep the top of the all-time chart in the news. With homers in seven straight games and counting at this writing, Bonds has blown past Willie Mays at number three like the Say Hey Kid was standing still, which— congratulatory road trip aside—he has been, come to think of it. Baseball Prospectus' Dayn Perry penned an affectionate tribute to Aaron last week. In reviewing Hammerin' Hank's history, he notes that Aaron's superficially declining stats in 1968 (the Year of the Pitcher, not coincidentally) led him to consider retirement, but that historian Lee Allen reminded him of the milestones which lay ahead. Two years later, Aaron became the first black player to cross the 3,000 hit threshold, two months ahead of Mays. By then he was chasing 600 homers and climbing into some rarefied air among the top power hitters of all time.

!^W.'UJtf"-V^j! _j my I'm Special i I'm special. In all the world there's nobody like me. Since the beginning of time, there has never been another person like me. Nobody has my smile. Nobody has my eyes, my nose, my hair, my voice. I'm special. No one can be found who has my handwriting. Nobody anywhere has my tastes - for food or music or art. no one sees things just as I do. In all of time there's been no one who laughs like me, no one who cries like me. And what makes me laugh and cry will never provoke identical laughter and tears from anybody else, ever. No one reacts to any situation just as I would react. I'm special. I'm the only one in all of creation who has my set of abilities. Oh, there will always be somebody who is better at one of the things I'm good at, but no one in the universe can reach the quality of my com bination of talents, ideas, abilities and feelings. Like a room full of musical instruments, some may excel alone, but none can match the symphony of sound when all are played together. I'm a symphony. Through all of eternity no one will ever look, talk, walk, think or do like me. I'm special. I'm rare. And in rarity there is great value. Because of my great rare value, I need not attempt to imitate others. I willl accept - yes, celebrate - my differences.

FAN IDENTITY AND IDENTIFICATION DRIVERS - STOKING THE FLAMES OF THE PHOENIX By Markus Rühl A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Management Studies Victoria University of Wellington 2010 ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Fans are of highest importance for the financial success of sports clubs (van Leeuwen, Quick, & Daniel, 2002). However, the nature of fandom and the meaning that fans place upon their relationship with a sports club varies and different degrees of fandom exist (Wann & Branscombe, 1990). Whilst much research has been done on the assessment of fan identification, little work has contributed to its practical application. For example, for sport marketers to actively strengthen their fan base, more than a mere assessment of the identification level of their fans is necessary. It is suggested that knowledge about the underlying identification drivers of fans with different identification levels is needed to inform any managerial action. This research aims to enhance understanding about the relationship between the level of fan identification and the drivers of identification, and it does so, via a study of New Zealand‟s only professional football club Wellington Phoenix FC. A cross-sectional convenience sample of 517 Wellington Phoenix fans was surveyed using both online and researcher administered/respondent completed questionnaires. The Sports Spectator Identification Scale (Wann & Branscombe, 1993) was used to measure fan identification, and participants were categorized into five identification levels. Findings show that ten of 16 identification drivers are correlated with the identification level. Of particular interest are findings that indicate a mediating impact of the identification level on specific relationships.

  • Tony La Russa
Tony La Russa Tony La Russa led his teams to three World Series titles (1989, 2006, and 2011) as a professional baseball manager and accumulated the third most managerial wins (2,728) in Major League Baseball history. That total is only 35 wins behind John McGraw, and 1,003 behind Connie Mack. La Russa, inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014, currently serves as Baseball Operations Special Advisor for the Los Angeles Angels. A Florida native, La Russa signed to play baseball with the Kansas City Athletics (or “A’s”) at age 17, made his Major League debut in 1960 at age 18, and and went on to play professional baseball for 16 seasons. He played with the A’s (both in Kansas City and Oakland), the Atlanta Braves, and the Chicago Cubs. Towards the end of his playing career, he earned a law degree before he was named the manager of a minor-league affiliate of the Chicago White Sox in 1978. He took over as manager of the White Sox in August of the 1979 season through June, 1986. The highlight of his White Sox tenure was a 99-win season and the Western Division Championship in 1983. It was the team’s first play-off berth in 24 years. Following his time in Chicago, he led the Oakland A’s for 10 years to their highest total wins for three straight seasons, winning the American League pennant each year (1988, 1989, and 1990). In 1989, the team defeated the San Francisco Giants to win the 1989 World Series championship.
