No great and enduring volume can ever be written on the flea, though many there be that have tried it.” Herman Melville, my ancestor and author of the classic novel Moby Dick, has passed this advice forward to myself and the world in this quote. The dynamics of the sports environment have proven to be a very worthy topic and have provided a rich amount of material that investigates the actions, thoughts, and behaviors of people as they navigate their way through a social environment that we have come to know as sport. By avoiding the study of fleas, I have instead had to navigate the deep blue waters of research into finding the causes, roots, and solutions to a social problem that has become figuratively as large as the mythical Moby Dick that my great-great uncle was in search of. -

THE MANLY SPORTS: THE PROBLEMATIC USE OF CRIMINAL LAW TO REGULATE SPORTS VIOLENCE With increasingfrequency, the criminal law has been used to punish athletes who act with excessive violence while playing inherently violent sports. This development is problematicas none of the theories that courts employ to justify this intervention adequately take into account the expectations of participantsand the interests of the ruling bodies of sports. This Essay proposes a standardfor the interaction of violent sports and criminal law that attempts to reconcile the rules of violent sports with the aims of the criminal law. JEFFREY STANDEN* I. INTRODUCTION When not on the playing field, an athlete stands in the same relation to the criminal law as does any other citizen.1 The particular requirements of the athlete's sport, where that sport includes acts of a violent nature, do not supply the athlete a special defense of "diminished capacity. -
Changes of Violence in Sport
Changes of Violence in Sport GÜNTER A. PILZ (F.R.G.) Abstract In the course of a development sociological analysis the question is asked, if violence in sports in the course of civilization process increases or decreases. The seeming contradiction between the thesis of decrease of violence in sports and the thesis of increase of violence in sports is solved by differentiating between expressive, pleasant, affective violence on one hand and instrumental, affectless, rational violence on the other. It can be seen that within long term development trends in society of increasing control of affects and monopolizing violence, ex- pressive violence in sports is more and more repressed, tamed, i.e. compared to earlier forms of sports expressive violence in sports today has decreased. On the other hand change of sports towards success orientation, increasing economical, political, and public significance of sports leads to an increase of instrumental violence in the sense of a consciously planned, aggressive rule violation in the interest of higher aims. In contrast to this an analysis of development of female sports shows - because of the change in power balance between sexes, the change of female behavior standards - that in female sports as well an increase of instrumental as of expressive violence can be noted in the sense of an ad- justment process to general social violence standards. Following the newest discussion on the problem of ’sports and vio- lence&dquo; one can distinguish between two apparent contradicting theses: 1. Within long-term social changes, the changes of control of vio- lence, the increasing control of affects and monopolizing of violence, vio- lence in sports is more and more repressed, tamed, i.e. -
Footballers with Migration Background in the German National Football Team
“It is about the flag on your chest!” Footballers with Migration Background in the German National Football Team. A matter of inclusion? An Explorative Case Study on Nationalism, Integration and National Identity. Oscar Brito Capon Master Thesis in Sociology Department of Sociology and Human Geography Faculty of Social Sciences University of Oslo June 2012 Oscar Brito Capon - Master Thesis in Sociology 2 Oscar Brito Capon - Master Thesis in Sociology Foreword Dear reader, the present research work represents, on one hand, my dearest wish to contribute to the understanding of some of the effects that the exclusionary, ethnocentric notions of nationhood and national belonging – which have characterized much of western European thinking throughout history – have had on individuals who do not fit within the preconceived frames of national unity and belonging with which most Europeans have been operating since the foundation of the nation-state approximately 140 years ago. On the other hand, this research also represents my personal journey to understand better my role as a citizen, a man, a father and a husband, while covered by a given aura of otherness, always reminding me of my permanent foreignness in the country I decided to make my home. In this sense, this has been a personal journey to learn how to cope with my new ascribed identity as an alien (my ‘labelled forehead’) without losing my essence in the process, and without forgetting who I also am and have been. This journey has been long and tough in many forms, for which I would like to thank the help I have received from those who have been accompanying my steps all along. -

I contend that while fair play guidelines prescribe universalists standards of ethical behavior for all football actors, there are multiple instances in mundane football events which result in players’, fans’ or other commentators’ variant appreciations of the ethical. Specific contingencies give birth to alternative formations of fairness leading us to consider how ethics might be a matter of constant negotiation rather than of preset verdicts. Using legal anthropology’s insights on legal pluralism and sports philosophy’s discussion of conventionalism, I focus on specific footballing instances in Turkish football and offer various social rationales in regard to how multiple ethical verdicts might be reached. In this discussion, I include how some footballing conventions in Turkey come into conversation with the written rules of football and set guidelines of fair play to show that people draw on different sets of rules (written and unwritten) in their deliberation of fair action, fair play awards and ethics. -

I would need another 10 documents this size to even begin to communicate what it is that makes you two so extraordinary. Sitting here now, writing this, I think how silly it is I’m even bothering, because it is truly impossible to tell you what inner tranquility you have given to me since I was old enough to understand what it is to be loved. -
The Criminal and Criminological Aspect of Delinquency of Rowdyism Character
PhD thesis Dr. László Tibor Nagy The criminal and criminological aspect of delinquency of rowdyism character Miskolc, 2009 I. Subject and object of the research The importance of the delinquency of rowdyism character has significantly increased for our days. Beside the progressively increasing tendency, rowdyism is definitely considered to be a delinquency category, having the highest social dangerous, dominantly influencing the sense of security of the population, most of all arousing the interest of the media, and which has become the most frequent crime of violent delinquency . While rowdyism represented merely the 15 % of the violent criminality in 1980, it was 33 % in 2008. This conception becomes clearly distinct, regarding the perpetrators, who had become notorious: between 1980 and 2008 the rate of persons accused by rowdyism, in the category of violent perpetrators had increased from 22 % to 49 %, so every second perpetrator from the revealed violent perpetrators commits rowdyism . So the crime-statistical data are unambiguously proving, that when we are talking about violent delinquency, or researching and estimating the features and shaping thereof, then actually we are mainly concerning rowdyism. While in our country many monographs had already been born in the topic of elaborating features of violent criminality, till the complex revealing of delinquency of rowdyism character is regarded as suppletory. I attempt to reveal the neglected aspects of delinquency of rowdyism character in their complexity , from the aspect of penal law and criminality in my thesis, and to perform the missing, independent monographic elaboration of the topic, at the same time realizing the completeness of the scientific analysis of the violent delinquency . -
