Football hooliganism periodically generates widespread political and public anxiety. In spite of the efforts made and resources invested over the past decades, football hooliganism is still perceived by politicians, policymakers and media as a disturbing social problem. This highly readable book provides the first systematic and empirically grounded comparison of football hooliganism in different national and local contexts. Focused around the six Western European football clubs on which the author did his research, the book shows how different clubs experience and understand football hooliganism in different ways. The development and effects of anti-hooligan policies are also assessed. The emphasis throughout is on the importance of context, social interaction and collective identity for understanding football hooliganism. This book will be essential reading for anyone interested in football culture, hooliganism and collective violence. ™xHSTAPGy294458z UNIVERSITEIT VAN AMSTERDAM Understanding Football Hooliganism The research for this book was funded by the Amsterdam School for Social Science Research (ASSR) and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). My prolonged stays in foreign countries and localities have helped me experience and appreciate the complex social, cultural and historical underpinnings of football fan cultures. It is clear to me that without the great variety of people contributing to the research project, each in their own ways, this book would never have been realized. Regretfully, not all can be personally acknowledged since many of those I have spoken to were guaranteed anonymity. I can therefore only mention some of the people who have offered me such good-natured support and assistance. First and foremost, I thank Kees Schuyt for his encouraging advice and kindness. His enthusiasm has been a driving force from the beginning. Without his efforts this study would have amounted to only a fraction of what it has become. I am grateful to Ruud Stokvis for his helpful comments on drafts of this book and for our lengthy, stimulating discussions. His expertise in the field of sports sociology was an indispensable source of inspiration to my work. I thank the Amsterdam School for Social Science Research

PHYSICAL CULTURE AND SPORT. STUDIES AND RESEARCH DOI: 10.1515/pcssr-2016-0015 The Open Sore of Football: Aggressive Violent Behavior and Hooliganism Authors’ contribution: Osman GumusgulA,C,D, Mehmet AcetB,E A) conception and design of the study B) acquisition of data Dumlupinar University, Turkey C) analysis and interpretation of data D) manuscript preparation E) obtaining funding ABSTRACT Aggression and violence have been a customary part of life that mankind has had to live with from the beginning of time; it has been accepted by society even though it expresses endless negativity. Aggression and violence can find a place in sports events and football games because of the social problems of the audience watching the competitions or games, which sometimes fall into the category of hooliganism. Turkey is one of the countries that should consider this problem to be a serious social problem. Even during 2014 and 2015, a relatively short period of time, there were significant hazardous acts committed by hooligans. In February 2014, one supporter was killed after a game between Liverpool and Arsenal in England; in March 2014, a game between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahce was left half-finished because of violent acts in the stadium that caused players in the pitch to believe that they could not leave stadium alive, although they finally left after a few hours; in another incident in March 2014, one supporter was killed after a game between Helsingborg and Djugarden in Sweden; in November 2014, one supporter was killed and 14 supporters were injured before the game between Atletico Madrid and Deportivo in Spain.

  • Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General, World Health Organization
WELCOME ADDRESSES Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General, World Health Organization Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was elected as WHO Director-General for a five-year term by WHO Member States at the Seventieth World Health Assembly in May 2017. He is the first WHO Director-General to have been elected from multiple candidates by the World Health Assembly, and is the first person from the WHO African Region to serve as WHO’s chief technical and administrative officer. Immediately after taking office on 1 July 2017 Dr Tedros outlined five key priorities for the Organization: universal health coverage; health emergencies; women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health; health impacts of climate and environmental change; and a transformed WHO. Prior to his election as WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros served as Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2012–2016. In this role he led efforts to negotiate the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, in which 193 countries committed to the financing necessary to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Dr Tedros served as Ethiopia’s Minister of Health from 2005–2012, where he led a comprehensive reform of the country’s health system. All roads lead to universal health coverage for Dr Tedros, and he has demonstrated what it takes to expand access to health care with limited resources. The transformation he led as Ethiopia’s Minister of Health improved access to health care for millions of people. Under his leadership Ethiopia invested in critical health infrastructure, expanded its health workforce, and developed innovative health financing mechanisms. Beyond Ethiopia, Dr Tedros’ global leadership on malaria, HIV/AIDS, and maternal and child health has been immensely impactful.

  • The Criminal and Criminological Aspect of Delinquency of Rowdyism Character
PhD thesis Dr. László Tibor Nagy The criminal and criminological aspect of delinquency of rowdyism character Miskolc, 2009 I. Subject and object of the research The importance of the delinquency of rowdyism character has significantly increased for our days. Beside the progressively increasing tendency, rowdyism is definitely considered to be a delinquency category, having the highest social dangerous, dominantly influencing the sense of security of the population, most of all arousing the interest of the media, and which has become the most frequent crime of violent delinquency . While rowdyism represented merely the 15 % of the violent criminality in 1980, it was 33 % in 2008. This conception becomes clearly distinct, regarding the perpetrators, who had become notorious: between 1980 and 2008 the rate of persons accused by rowdyism, in the category of violent perpetrators had increased from 22 % to 49 %, so every second perpetrator from the revealed violent perpetrators commits rowdyism . So the crime-statistical data are unambiguously proving, that when we are talking about violent delinquency, or researching and estimating the features and shaping thereof, then actually we are mainly concerning rowdyism. While in our country many monographs had already been born in the topic of elaborating features of violent criminality, till the complex revealing of delinquency of rowdyism character is regarded as suppletory. I attempt to reveal the neglected aspects of delinquency of rowdyism character in their complexity , from the aspect of penal law and criminality in my thesis, and to perform the missing, independent monographic elaboration of the topic, at the same time realizing the completeness of the scientific analysis of the violent delinquency .
