Two territories of similar extension and with historical coincidences in their development have been selected: the Okanagan Valley, Canada, and the region of Somontano, Spain. Methodologically, an analysis of the content on Twitter has been performed, collecting 1377 tweets. The conclusion is that wineries create sentimental and experiential links with the users, avoiding commercial communications. Specifically, Okanagan wineries establish a relevant conversation network on Twitter based on the high percentage of responses, which is 31.3%, but this is not so in the case of Somontano, which is 12.8%. The tourist attractions most used to create a bond are the wine landscape and the gastronomy in the case of both territories. The tourism sustainability variable remains a minor matter in the emission of messages on Twitter. Julio Iglesias
Spanish Art & Culture Julio Iglesias Julio Iglesias' Biography as found at his official website - www.julioiglesias.com Julio Iglesias was born in Madrid on 23rd September 1943 to Dr. Julio Iglesias Puga and Maria Del Rosario de la Cueva y Perignat. He shared his childhood with his brother Carlos. His father, Dr. Iglesias Puga, was born in Orense, Galicia. On his mother's side, his grandfather was Jose de la Cueva, a famous Andalusian journalist. He was a remarkable athlete, and he played goalkeeper for the junior Real Madrid soccer team. He wanted to be a professional soccer player, but he never abandoned his studies. He studied Law in the Complutense University of Madrid. On the night of 22nd September 1963, while returning from Majadahonda to Madrid about two o'clock in the morning with some friends, he suffered a very severe car accident which left him semi-paralyzed for more than a year and a half. The hope that he would walk again was very slight. To develop and increase the dexterity of his hands he started to play the guitar and write poetry. His personal will to live, and the great support of his family, especially of his father, who even abandoned his profession for more than a year to help his son's rehabilitation, produced a true miracle. After many months of very difficult recuperation Julio began to walk again. Once recovered, he resumed his studies and travelled to England to study English, first in Ramsgate and then went on to Bell's Language School in Cambridge. -

Spain's Fiesta Nacional in a Comparative Perspective Author
1 Spain’s Fiesta Nacional in a Comparative Perspective Author: Marcela García Sebastiani Associate Professor, Departamento de Historia, Teorías y Geografía políticas. Facultad de Ciencias Políticas y Sociología. Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Campus de Somosaguas. Pozuelo de Alarcón. Madrid. CP 28223. Despacho 2617. Email: [email protected] Abstract National day holidays are the key moments, ahead of any others, in the dramatic and visual presentation of identification with the past and with a shared project for the future. These dates are also a means of communicating to the world what are considered to be the qualities, essences and strengths of each nation. The political rituals deployed on such occasions help construct the myths that sustain nations. Through them states also appeal to the emotions of their citizens in order to get them to identify with the cultural references, locations and values alluded to in each case. The significance of these events differs from one country to another. Not all have the same status, nor are they staged in the same way, even though in each case they are identified with events and experiences from the respective national stories. For Spaniards, the commemoration of October 12 evokes references to the country’s influence in the Americas and nostalgia for empire as a foundational element of the national identity. Since there is no uniform model for such events, and in some instances a lack of consensus around them or tensions between them and other forms of celebration, a comparative approach is an ideal exercise for highlighting the exceptional features of Spain’s National Day holiday in an international context over the course of the twentieth century. -

The Politics of Bulls and Bullfights in Contemporary Spain
SOCIAL THOUGHT & COMMENTARY Torophies and Torphobes: The Politics of Bulls and Bullfights in Contemporary Spain Stanley Brandes University of California, Berkeley Abstract Although the bullfight as a public spectacle extends throughout southwestern Europe and much of Latin America, it attains greatest political, cultural, and symbolic salience in Spain. Yet within Spain today, the bullfight has come under serious attack, from at least three sources: (1) Catalan nationalists, (2) Spaniards who identify with the new Europe, and (3) increasingly vocal animal rights advocates. This article explores the current debate—cultural, political, and ethical—on bulls and bullfighting within the Spanish state, and explores the sources of recent controversy on this issue. [Keywords: Spain, bullfighting, Catalonia, animal rights, public spectacle, nationalism, European Union] 779 Torophies and Torphobes: The Politics of Bulls and Bullfights in Contemporary Spain s is well known, the bullfight as a public spectacle extends through- A out southwestern Europe (e.g., Campbell 1932, Colomb and Thorel 2005, Saumade 1994), particularly southern France, Portugal, and Spain. It is in Spain alone, however, that this custom has attained notable polit- ical, cultural, and symbolic salience. For many Spaniards, the bull is a quasi-sacred creature (Pérez Álvarez 2004), the bullfight a display of exceptional artistry. Tourists consider bullfights virtually synonymous with Spain and flock to these events as a source of exotic entertainment. My impression, in fact, is that bullfighting is even more closely associated with Spanish national identity than baseball is to that of the United States. Garry Marvin puts the matter well when he writes that the cultur- al significance of the bullfight is “suggested by its general popular image as something quintessentially Spanish, by the considerable attention paid to it within Spain, and because of its status as an elaborate and spectacu- lar ritual drama which is staged as an essential part of many important celebrations” (Marvin 1988:xv). -
