That was the last time one player has won both events in the same year. David Stanford, who topped Cullen Campbell in June at Winchester CC to claim the 30th VSGA Junior Match Play Championship title will look to become the fifth player to win both titles in the same year, and in the shadow of his future college home of Virginia Tech, which is about 30 minutes away from Roanoke. Junior Stroke Play field notes All but three of the 16 players who qualified for match play at the VSGA Junior Match Play championship are in the field at Roanoke, including semifinalists David Stanford, Cullen Campbell, Garrett Kuhla and Jack Hoyle. Justin Larue who participated in last week's U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Country Club of North Carolina, is in the field. Home course advantage? Five Roanoke Country Club members are competing: Ashton Harper, Owen Bright, Samir Davidov, Uzair Mirza and Slade Aliff. Everyone in the field is a teenager, save for Yorktown's Brandon Sipe, who is 12 and won't turn 13 until the fall. Sipe has won his age division in the last two VSGA Youth Championships. Vienna's Matt Moloney, who advanced to U.S. Open Final Qualifying earlier this year, participated in the prestigious Scott Robertson at Roanoke CC in May and finished tied for eighth after posting 68-74-71 for a three-day 213. Stanford and Harper tied for 15th at 215. Blacksburg's Jake Albert shot 71-74-76 for a three-day 221 to finish eighth in the 14-and-under division. Great Falls' Chase Nevins, who was the runner-up last year at James River CC, has had a solid two-year run on the AJGA circuit, racking up three victories since last July and adding three other top-15 finishes in events. Nevins was a high-school teammate at Langley of 2020 champion Kelly Chinn.
