Long Live the Revolutions: Fighting for France's Political Future in the Long Wake of the Commune, 1871-1880 Abstract The traumatic legacies of the Paris Commune and its harsh suppression in 1871 had a significant impact on the identities and voter outreach efforts of each of the chief political blocs of the 1870s. The political and cultural developments of this phenomenal decade, which is frequently mislabeled as calm and stable, established the Republic's longevity and set its character. Yet the Commune's legacies have never been comprehensively examined in a way that synthesizes their political and cultural effects. This dissertation offers a compelling perspective of the 1870s through qualitative and quantitative analyses of the influence of these legacies, using sources as diverse as parliamentary debates, visual media, and scribbled sedition on city walls, to explicate the decade's most important political and cultural moments, their origins, and their impact.

    CARL LANDAUER THE ORIGIN OF SOCIALIST REFORMISM IN FRANCE* PRELUDE: THE OPPOSITION TO MARX IN THE INTERNATIONAL Although the International Workingmen's Association is often called the Marxian International, it was at no time safely under the control of Karl Marx. The spirit of Marx, however, was the strongest single influence in the organization from its beginning, and from 1868, when the Proudhonians had suffered defeat at the Brussels Congress, to 1872, when Bakunin's opposition proved too strong to be overcome, Marx possessed more power in the organization than anyone else. Yet this power collapsed in 1872: Although formally Marx was the victor at the Hague Congress, actually in the conflict with Bakunin it became evident that Marx's position was disintegrating. What were the reasons? "Marx accused his opponent of the intention to introduce into the Association ideological disorder, the spirit of [political] abstentionism and of federalism, in the Utopian desire to create a communal organi- zation without government.     Anarchism PO53022A (Spring 2013) Prof. Carl Levy Department of Politics Goldsmiths College University of London WT 708 Office Hours Mondays 2-4 [email protected] This unit focuses on the history, politics and ideology of anarchism chiefly from its origins in the nineteenth century to 1939. There will be a discussion of anarchism in the post-1945 period but the main aim of the unit is to trace the origins and development of anarchist ideology (Godwin, Stirner, Proudhon, Bakunin, Kropotkin, Malatesta, Goldman, etc.) and the associated social and labour movements in Europe and the Americas (from the Paris Commune of 1871 to the Spanish Civil War, 1936- 1939, and the Haymarket Riot of Chicago of 1886 and the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1920 to the Russian Revolution and Civil War of 1917-1921). We will investigate anarcho-collectivism, anarcho- communism, anarcho-individualism and anarcho-syndicalism. The relationship between anarchist movements and terrorism will also be discussed, but so too will the relationship of art and education to anarchism. But these will also be a substantial time devoted to anarchist-type movements and ideas, which developed throughout the world before 1800 and as well a discussion of the ‘ism’, anarchism, its reception and interchange with thinkers, ideas and movements in Asia and Africa. Course Aims To examine the concepts and values which are central to anarchist thought.     Kropotkin's Theory of Mutual Aid in Historical Context* RUTH KINNA Summary: This paper examines the relationship between science and anarchism in Kropotkin's theory of mutual aid and analyses it in the light of his concerns about the rise of social democracy and individualism. Tracing the development of the theory from the 1890s to Kropotkin's death in 1921, it affirms the centrality of mutual aid in his work but argues, contrary to existing readings, that the theory can be seen as an attempt to inspire the revival of the anarchist movement. It concludes that there is an unresolved tension in Kropotkin's work arising from the imbalance between the idea of a "natural anarchist tendency" and anarchist propaganda.     DAVID STAFFORD PAUL BROUSSE Paul Brousse was not in the strict sense of the word a Communard. That is to say, he was not a member of the Paris Commune, nor did he, so far as is known, take part in any of the simultaneous pro- vincial uprisings. He was, however, of the Communard generation, he was politically committed to the radical movement, and was working on Guesde's Les Droits de I'Homme in Montpellier when the Commune was declared. He suffered from its consequences, and he drew con- clusions from it which bore on his own distinctive contribution to the French socialist movement. In other words, he was as affected by it as many of his generation who were more directly involved, but in a way which prevented him from falhng into the sectarianism compounded of personal and ideological issues which were characteristic of much of the Communard exile generation. These factors, plus his undoubted significance in the revival of the socialist movement in France in the late 1870's, justify his inclusion in a symposium of this kind. At the time of the Commune, Brousse, then 27, a medical student and the son of a University Professor at Montpellier, had been involved in political activities for only a short while. In 1869 he had begun to work for a radical newspaper, La Liberte, and in 1870 had been elected to the administrative committee of Jules Guesde's radical Montpellier-based newspaper Les Droits de I'Homme. This newspaper strongly defended the Commune, invoked Government repression, and Guesde was forced to take refuge in Switzerland.

    chapter �5 Revolutions, Republics and iwma in the Spanish Empire (around 1873) Jeanne Moisand In the fall of 1873, Engels published his analysis of “Cantonalist” revolutions which had just burst out in Spain, and were still partially under way. Apart from its role in the ideological struggles of the time, this polemical series of articles (entitled “Bakuninists at work”) raised a central question: how was the development of internationalism in Spain linked to different republican revolutionary movements, which broke out across its empire between 1868 and 1878? Opened by the liberal revolution of September 1868, a revolutionary cycle (the “democratic Sexenium”) led in 1873 to the unexpected establishment of the First Spanish Republic. According to Engels, a genuine social Republic was now at hand if internationalist workers supported the Government of the “republican socialist” Pi y Margall. Instead, the “false” Spanish International, with its apolitical Bakuninist façade, relied on the so-called intransigent Re- publicans, “crooks” that led workers in the irresponsible revolutionary creation of small local republics. Beyond the controversy, Engels seemed to share with his opponents the idea that internationalism was irrevocably linked in Spain to a certain type of republicanism.1 His attention to the opportunities created by the Spanish revolutionary cycle contrasted with his neglect of the imperial backstage of the Democratic Sexenium. The proclamation of an independent republic in Eastern Cuba in 1869 led Spain to heavy war efforts against the in- surgents.
