It joined the IWMA in 1869, and it numbered 400 members in 1893. While it was at the same time a friendly society and a consumption co-operative, it played an impor- tant part in the creation of the “Union de métiers”, a union which gathered the various trades in metal (1871), in the creation of the first “Maison du people” in the country (1872), and after it joined the Parti ouvrier belge (POB, 1885), of the large regional consumption co-op “Progrès de Jolimont” (1886), and then regional and national federations of the socialist friendly societies (1890). It is undoubtedly the first example of a continuity between the IWMA and the POB. It is also evidence of the lack of anarchist rooting, although it joined the federalist international. The preservation of the old banner can be accounted for by this exceptional continuity. Fayt is a hamlet in the municipality of Seneffe, which was incorporated in that of manage (1880), between Mons and Charleroi, part of the Centre Region (Hainaut), which went through an industrial boom thanks to the railroad be- tween Manage and Mons. It is an integral part of the doctrine that deals with the Messianic time, as is seen in the constantly recurring expression, “shub shebut” or heshib shebut,” used both of Israel and of Judah (Jer. xxx, 7,1; Ezek. Xxxix. 24; Lam. Ii. 14; Hos. Vi. 11; Joel iv. 1 et al.). The Dispersion was deemed merely temporal: ‘The days come … that … I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof … and I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land” (Amos ix.

For more information, please contact the GRO team: [email protected] chapter �3 The Italians and the iwma Carl Levy Introduction Italians played a significant and multi-dimensional role in the birth, evolution and death of the First International, and indeed in its multifarious afterlives: the International Working Men's Association (iwma) has also served as a milestone or foundation event for histories of Italian anarchism, syndicalism, socialism and communism.1 The Italian presence was felt simultaneously at the national, international and transnational levels from 1864 onwards. In this chapter I will first present a brief synoptic overview of the history of the iwma (in its varied forms) in Italy and abroad from 1864 to 1881. I will then exam- ine interpretations of aspects of Italian Internationalism: Mazzinian Repub- licanism and the origins of anarchism, the Italians, Bakunin and interactions with Marx and his ideas, the theory and practice of propaganda by the deed and the rise of a third-way socialism neither fully reformist nor revolutionary, neither Marxist nor anarchist.

Lida y Fernando Lida-García El Colegio de México Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas y Censos (INDEC ) n el siglo XIX , sobre todo por la influencia del romanticismo alemán, la filología, junto con la filosofía y la historia, adquirió el prestigio de una ciencia que permitiría conocer los Eorígenes y características culturales de un pueblo o comunidad lingüística y aprehender su espíritu (Volkgeist). Esta disciplina abarcaba una gama tan amplia de temas –desde el estudio de las lenguas y culturas antiguas y modernas, y la historia de sus orígenes, hasta la investiga- ción sobre el folklore y las tradiciones populares–, que el filólogo alemán Georg Curtius (1820- 1885) llegó a afirmar que la filología era a las ciencias humanas lo que la matemática a las ciencias exactas. Esta visión humanística totalizadora se fue circunscribiendo hacia finales del sigloXIX , al reconocer que como disciplina científica se debía sujetar a observaciones y examen sistemáti- cos de los cuales deducir principios y leyes generales. Desde entonces diversos enfoques teó- ricos y epistemológicos desagregaron la filología en disciplinas cada vez más especializadas. España no quedó al margen de este proceso; el desarrollo en ese país de la investigación filo- lógica moderna se debió, sobre todo, a la labor de Ramón Menéndez Pidal (1869-1968), quien sirvió de bisagra entre la tradición romántica alemana, con su búsqueda del Volkgeist en el estudio de los orígenes de la literatura castellana, y las corrientes teóricas y científicas contem- poráneas. Menéndez Pidal –junto con sus colegas y discípulos de la sección de Filología del Centro de Estudios Históricos (CEH ) de Madrid, fundado y dirigido por él en 1910– convirtió al Centro y a su Revista de Filología Española (RFE ), creada en 1914, en dos grandes impulso- res de los estudios filológicos en el mundo hispánico hasta la década de 1930.1 La Argentina recibió esta influencia después de la Primera Guerra Mundial.

UPF JOURNAL OF WORLD HISTORY Barcelona ﺍ Universitat Pompeu Fabra Número 4 (desembre 2012) www.entremons.org Neo-Malthusianism, Anarchism and Resistance: World View and the Limits of Acceptance in Barcelona (1904-1914) Daniel PARSONS Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona abstract This paper attempts to identify the barriers to the acceptance of Neo-Malthusian discourse among anarchists and sympathizers in the first years of the 20th century in Barcelona. Neo-Malthusian anarchists advocated the use and promotion of contraceptives and birth control as a way to achieve liberation while subscribing to a Malthusian perspective of nature. The revolutionary discourse was disseminated in Barcelona primarily by the journal Salud y Fuerza and its editor Lluis Bulffi from 1904-1914, at the same time sharing ideological goals with traditional anarchism while clashing with the conception of a beneficent and abundant nature which underpinned traditional anarchist thought. Given the cultural, social and political importance of anarchism to the history of Barcelona in particular and Europe in general, further investigation into Neo-Malthusianism and the response to the discourse is needed in order to understand better the generally accepted world-view among anarchists and how they responded to challenges to this vision. This is a topic not fully addressed by current historiography on Neo- Malthusian anarchism. This article is derived from my Master’s thesis in Contemporary History at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona entitled “Neomathusianismo, anarquismo y resistencias: Los límites de su aceptación en Cataluña”, which contains a further exposition of the ideas included herein, as well as a broader perspective on the topic.

Koenker Summary: This essay offers approaches to reading worker autobiographies as a genre as well as source of historical ‘‘data’’. It focuses primarily on one example of worker narrative, the autobiographical notes of Eduard M. Dune, recounting his experiences in the Russian Revolution and civil war, and argues that such texts cannot be utilized even as ‘‘data’’ without also appreciating the ways in which they were shaped and constructed. The article proposes some ways to examine the cultural constructions of such documents, to offer a preliminary typology of lower- class autobiographical statements for Russia and the Soviet Union, and to offer some suggestions for bringing together the skills of literary scholars and historians to the task of reading workers’ autobiographies. In the proliferation of the scholarly study of the autobiographical genre in the past decades, the autobiographies of ‘‘common people’’ have received insignificant attention. Autobiography, it has been argued, is a bourgeois genre, the artifact of the development of modern liberal individualism, the product of individuals with leisure and education to contemplate their selfhood in the luxury of time.1 Peasants, particularly during the time of ‘‘motionless history’’, are judged to constitute ‘‘anti-autobiographical space’’. Nunca como ahora se ha hecho sentir tanto la necesidad de la divulgación del nombre y la obra de nuestros precursores. Cuando este volumen fue escrito, en 1938, formaba parte de unas ediciones conjuntas CNT-UGT dedicadas a ilustrar a la juventud que se iba formando en plena Guerra Civil y en plena Revolución Española. Los dos primeros volúmenes fueron de- dicados, el uno a Pablo Iglesias, escrito por Julián Zugazagoi- tia, y el otro a Anselmo Lorenzo, que se encargó a Federica Montseny. De esas primeras ediciones se hicieron muchos mi- les de ejemplares. Hoy no se encuentra ninguno en España. Y hay, en cambio, otra juventud española sedienta de conocer a los grandes teóricos del sindicalismo y sobre todo del anarco- sindicalismo que constantemente nos visita y nos asedia con demandas. De ahí quen «Espoir» haya decidido la tercera edi- ción de este volumen, que, por su precio módico y su lectura fácil, será un auxiliar precioso para el conocimiento de la figura de Lorenzo y de cuanto, en el curso de su vida ejemplar, cons- tituyó el clima social, las luchas y los empeños de su existen- cia, así como la de los miles de obreros que con él los com- partieron.
