Papers on Joyce 2 (1996): 47-64 The Impact of James Joyce on the Work of Juan Ramón Jiménez MARISOL MORALES LADRÓN Universidad de Alcalá de Henares The work of the Andalusian writer Juan Ramón Jiménez probably constitutes one of the earliest indications of James Joyce's impact on Spanish literature. Born in 1881, only a year before Joyce, Juan Ramón wrote between the years of 1941 and 1954 a series of critical essays in which we find one dedicated to Joyce, and two long poems in prose entitled Espacio (Space) and Tiempo (Time), the readings of which bear some markedly Joycean traits, notably in their use of the interior monologue and their overall consideration of time and space. A more detailed exploration of Juan Ramón's work demonstrates that his knowledge of Joyce, a factor underlined by the considerable number of occasions in which he is mentioned, is far greater than one might have hoped to expect from two such close contemporaries. In this discussion I should like to offer a brief consideration of Joyce's impact on Juan Ramón's literary career. My approach will be essentially twofold: to analyze the presence of Joycean traits in Juan Ramón's work, and to consider the surprising number of parallels in their personal lives and literary careers, parallels which exerted similar degrees of influence on their intellectual evolution. Although to some extent Juan Ramón is identified in the Spanish tradition as a poet more than a writer of prose, one of the most striking aspects of his work is the fact that even though the majority of his canon was originally written in verse, at the end of his life he decided to recast it in prose form, for he no longer saw such a clear distinction between the genres. -

I Belong Only to Myself: The Life and Writings of Leda Rafanelli Excerpt from: CHAPTER VI Individualism and Futurism: Compagni in Milan ...Tracking back a few years, Leda and her beau Giuseppe Monanni had been invited to Milan in 1908 in order to take over the editorship of the newspaper The Human Protest (La Protesta Umana) by its directors, Ettore Molinari and Nella Giacomelli. The anarchist newspaper with the largest circulation at that time, The Human Protest was published from 1906–1909 and emphasized individual action and rebellion against institutions, going so far as to print articles encouraging readers to occupy the Duomo, Milan’s central cathedral.3 Hence it was no surprise that The Human Protest was subject to repeated seizures and the condemnations of its editorial managers, the latest of whom—Massimo Rocca (aka Libero Tancredi), Giovanni Gavilli, and Paolo Schicchi—were having a hard time getting along. Due to a lack of funding, editorial activity for The Human Protest was indefinitely suspended almost as soon as Leda arrived in Milan. She nevertheless became close friends with Nella Giacomelli (1873– 1949). Giacomelli had started out as a socialist activist while working as a teacher in the 1890s, but stepped back from political involvement after a failed suicide attempt in 1898, presumably over an unhappy love affair.4 She then moved to Milan where she met her partner, Ettore Molinari, and turned towards the anarchist movement. Her skepticism, or perhaps burnout, over the ability of humans to foster social change was extended to the anarchist movement, which she later claimed “creates rebels but doesn’t make anarchists.”5 Yet she continued on with her literary initiatives and support of libertarian causes all the same. -

Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Ariel Mae Lambe All rights reserved ABSTRACT Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe This dissertation shows that during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) diverse Cubans organized to support the Spanish Second Republic, overcoming differences to coalesce around a movement they defined as antifascism. Hundreds of Cuban volunteers—more than from any other Latin American country—traveled to Spain to fight for the Republic in both the International Brigades and the regular Republican forces, to provide medical care, and to serve in other support roles; children, women, and men back home worked together to raise substantial monetary and material aid for Spanish children during the war; and longstanding groups on the island including black associations, Freemasons, anarchists, and the Communist Party leveraged organizational and publishing resources to raise awareness, garner support, fund, and otherwise assist the cause. The dissertation studies Cuban antifascist individuals, campaigns, organizations, and networks operating transnationally to help the Spanish Republic, contextualizing these efforts in Cuba’s internal struggles of the 1930s. It argues that both transnational solidarity and domestic concerns defined Cuban antifascism. First, Cubans confronting crises of democracy at home and in Spain believed fascism threatened them directly. Citing examples in Ethiopia, China, Europe, and Latin America, Cuban antifascists—like many others—feared a worldwide menace posed by fascism’s spread. -

This thesis explores the norms, practices, and experiences that conditioned urban belonging in Late Medieval Barcelona. A combination of institutional, legal, intellectual and cultural analysis, the dissertation investigates how citizenship evolved and functioned on the Barcelonese stage. To this end, the thesis is structured into two parts. Part 1 includes four chapters, within which I establish the legal and institutional background of the Barcelonese citizen. Citizenship as a fiscal and individual privilege is contextualised within the negotiations that shaped the limits and prerogatives of monarchical and municipal power from the thirteenth to the late fourteenth centuries. -

Lida y Fernando Lida-García El Colegio de México Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas y Censos (INDEC ) n el siglo XIX , sobre todo por la influencia del romanticismo alemán, la filología, junto con la filosofía y la historia, adquirió el prestigio de una ciencia que permitiría conocer los Eorígenes y características culturales de un pueblo o comunidad lingüística y aprehender su espíritu (Volkgeist). Esta disciplina abarcaba una gama tan amplia de temas –desde el estudio de las lenguas y culturas antiguas y modernas, y la historia de sus orígenes, hasta la investiga- ción sobre el folklore y las tradiciones populares–, que el filólogo alemán Georg Curtius (1820- 1885) llegó a afirmar que la filología era a las ciencias humanas lo que la matemática a las ciencias exactas. Esta visión humanística totalizadora se fue circunscribiendo hacia finales del sigloXIX , al reconocer que como disciplina científica se debía sujetar a observaciones y examen sistemáti- cos de los cuales deducir principios y leyes generales. Desde entonces diversos enfoques teó- ricos y epistemológicos desagregaron la filología en disciplinas cada vez más especializadas. España no quedó al margen de este proceso; el desarrollo en ese país de la investigación filo- lógica moderna se debió, sobre todo, a la labor de Ramón Menéndez Pidal (1869-1968), quien sirvió de bisagra entre la tradición romántica alemana, con su búsqueda del Volkgeist en el estudio de los orígenes de la literatura castellana, y las corrientes teóricas y científicas contem- poráneas. Menéndez Pidal –junto con sus colegas y discípulos de la sección de Filología del Centro de Estudios Históricos (CEH ) de Madrid, fundado y dirigido por él en 1910– convirtió al Centro y a su Revista de Filología Española (RFE ), creada en 1914, en dos grandes impulso- res de los estudios filológicos en el mundo hispánico hasta la década de 1930.1 La Argentina recibió esta influencia después de la Primera Guerra Mundial. -

From 29 March to 15 July 2012 (Temporary Exhibitions Room 1) Curator: Rafael Cornudella (head of the MNAC's Department of Gothic Art), with the collaboration of Guadaira Macías and Cèsar Favà Catalonia 1400. The International Gothic Style looks at one of the most creative cycles in the history of Catalan art, which coincided with the period in western art known as the 'International Gothic Style'. This period, which began at the end of the 14th century and went on until the mid-15th century, gave us artists who played a central role in the history of European art, as in the case of Lluís Borrassà, Rafael Destorrents, Pere Joan and Bernat Martorell. During the course of the 14th century a process of dialogue and synthesis took place between the two great poles of modernity in art: on one hand Paris, the north of France and the old Netherlands, and on the other central Italy, mainly Tuscany. Around 1400 this process crystallised in a new aesthetic code which, despite having been formulated first and foremost in a French and 'Franco- Flemish' ambit, was also fed by other international contributions and immediately spread across Europe. The artistic dynamism of the Franco- Flemish area, along with the policies of patronage and prestige of the French ruling House of Valois, explain the success of a cultural model that was to captivate many other European princes and lords. -

Anarchism, the Republic and Civil War in Spain: 1931–1939 This groundbreaking new study, translated for the first time into English, is the first synthesis to relate and interpret the main evolutionary milestones of anar- chism in Spain, and is crucial to understanding the social conflict of 1930s Spain. Casanova explores the concept of anarchism as both a political ideology and a social movement during the Second Republic and the Civil War (1931–1939). Dividing the work into two parts, the author first explores anarchism’s strained relation with the republican regime. He then goes on to analyse the revolu- tionary process that broke out in the summer of 1936. This complete new study also examines possible reasons why anarcho-syndicalism did not resurface after the death of the Spanish dictator Franco, and offers a commentary on other writings on anarchism in contemporary Spain. Not only does the age- old “social question” concerning the exploitation of human labor remain unresolved, but the plundering of natural resources has reached a point where humanity is also forced to politically deal with an “ecological question.” Today, we have to make conscious choices about what direction society should take, to properly meet these challenges. At the same time, we see that our very ability to make the necessary choices are being undermined by an incessant centralization of economic and political power. Educadora libertária, escritora feminista, jornalista polêmica e oradora prestigiada, destaca-se por uma vibrante atuação nos meios políticos, culturais e literários brasileiros e sul-americanos, desde as primeiras décadas do século 20, quando se constitui o movimento operário, com a formação do mercado de trabalho livre, a industrialização e a vinda dos imigrantes europeus e de suas doutrinas políticas.1 Além dos inúmeros livros, artigos e folhetos em que denuncia as múltiplas formas da dominação burguesa, da opressão masculina e da exploração capitalista do trabalho, pesquisas recentes revelam que vários dos textos de Maria Lacerda de Moura podem ser encontrados não apenas nos periódicos brasileiros, mas também nas revistas anarquistas, publicadas na Espanha e na Argentina, entre as décadas de 1920 e 1930.
