Kole de Peralta THE NATURE OF COLONIAL BODIES: PUBLIC HEALTH IN LIMA, PERU, 1535- 1640 Abstract by Kathleen M. Kole de Peralta In 1535, Francisco Pizarro founded Lima, Peru in the middle of a coastal dessert. Its residents transformed the landscape to build a colonial capital and in the process, the landscape shaped local understandings of race, gender, social status and power. Lima’s urban environment created a public health discourse that focused on the relationship between the natural world and human welfare. These discussions emerged in response to the rapid rate of Lima’s growth and the challenges it faced, including deforestation, food supply challenges, and the concentration of waste, disease, and illness. I argue that Lima’s cabildo [municipal government], comprised of just a fraction of the population, seized on these adversities to empower themselves over the majority of the population, promote their interests, and negotiate interactions between humans and their environs. Using the discourse of colonial bodies, health, and the natural world, town councilmen endeavored to control a racially and socially diverse population that surpassed 25,000 people by 1614. Though not as widely known as the famous saga of internment and redress of Japanese Americans and Japanese Canadians, in many ways the story of the Japanese in Peru is more intriguing, as much information still lies in the shadows, and is only now coming to light. Likewise, the issues of civil liberties that underscore this story—how a powerful nation can coerce a weaker ally into handing over some of its own people for imprisonment in another country without due process, on the ground that they are potential subversives—are all too obvious in a post 9/11 world fighting a Panama Canal Zone: Japanese Peruvians en route “war on terrorism”. An Example of an Understudied Genre in Ricardo Palma, the Essay
Middle Atlantic Review of Latin American Studies, 2019 Vol. 3, No. 2, 39-57 “Sistema decimal entre los antiguos peruanos”: An Example of an Understudied Genre in Ricardo Palma, The Essay Thomas Ward Loyola University Maryland [email protected] Peruvian author Ricardo Palma gained prominence as South America’s preeminent literary figure with his tradiciones, but he also cultivated lesser-known genres such as poetry and theater, as well as the essay, the topic of the present study. This article investigates why Palma’s “Sistema decimal entre los antiguos peruanos” is an essay and not a tradición, an apparent, yet erroneous category for it, since it appeared in Peruvian Traditions. In it, Palma utilizes a philological analysis of the anonymous play Ollantay and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega’s Royal Commentaries to prove that the Inkas used the decimal system of numbers. The present article considers why this piece is an essay by comparing its constituent elements with the characteristics of the essay as José Luis Gómez Martínez outlines them, including discursivity, lack of a rigid structure, incitement to reflection, digression, and vagueness in quoting practices. If Palma completes a philological commentary on Ollantay and the Royal Commentaries, the present article accomplishes a philological analysis of Palma’s “Sistema decimal,” which reveals qualities properly belonging to the essay. The selected set of traditions is based on historical reference ranging from 1820 to 1885. The research is organized into four chapters. The first chapter is an introduction with special emphasis on the theoretical framework, the state of the question, and the civic, aesthetic and ideological reasons that led Ricardo Palma to write the chosen corpus. The second chapter looks to the traditions that elude to the presence of the Argentine general Don José de San Martín and the Venezuelan liberator Simón Bolívar at different moments from the early years before the and after the emancipation process in Peru, ranging from 1820 to 1827. The third chapter refers to the literary version of what history has called the First Peruvian Militarism (1827-1883) and which Palma rewrites with all the tones of anarchy, anecdote, festivity and political apprenticeship that led to the construction of the nineteenth-century Peruvian Republic. -
