The approach emphasizes two cultural phenomena: how the indigenous peo ple related to the Conquistadors in forging a new society, as well as how im migration, particularly to Lima, has shaped contemporary Peru. This contribu tion also aims at providing a bibliographical resource to those who would like to conduct research on Peru. -
"Patria É Intereses": Reflections on the Origins and Changing Meanings of Ilustrado

Through an analysis of the historical origins and changing meanings of “ilustrado” in Philippine literary and nationalist discourse, this article looks at the politics of reading and writing that have shaped international and domestic reception of the novel. While the novel seeks to resignify the hitherto class- bound concept of “ilustrado” to include Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), historical and contemporary usages of the term present conceptual and practical difficulties and challenges that require a new intellectual paradigm for understanding Philippine society. Keywords: rizal • novel • ofw • ilustrado • nationalism PHILIPPINE STUDIES 59, NO. 1 (2011) 3–54 © Ateneo de Manila University iguel Syjuco’s Ilustrado (2010) is arguably the first contemporary novel by a Filipino to have a global presence and impact (fig. 1). Published in America by Farrar, Straus and Giroux and in Great Britain by Picador, the novel has garnered rave reviews across Mthe Atlantic and received press coverage in the Commonwealth nations of Australia and Canada (where Syjuco is currently based). -

Between 1703 and 1708, the Grand Alliance secured for the Austrian Habsburg archduke Charles –“Charles III” to his supporters in the succession struggle triggered by the death of the last Spanish Habsburg– a substantial chunk of the European Spanish Habsburg empire or Monarchy: Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia and Gibraltar inside Spain, Spanish Flanders, the duchy of Milan, the Balearic Islands and Sardinia, and the kingdom of Naples outside Spain. In fact, Aragon and Valencia were already by 1708 being reconquered by the troops of Philip V following his victory at Almansa, but the other territories represented a substantial composite monarchy which Charles must seek to turn into a viable polity; his –broadly successful– efforts to create an effective central executive for that territorial ensemble between 1706 and 1714, by which time Charles had succeeded (1711) his elder brother Joseph as Holy Roman Emperor, and had removed his Court from Barcelona to Vienna, are the subject of Roberto Quirós’ book. In fact, Quirós focuses on Charles’ efforts to make his rule effective in Milan and Naples. This decision is well judged, since Italy has been relatively neglected by the historiography of the War of the Spanish Succession, as Quirós’s initial historiographical survey demonstrates. In addition, following the loss of Aragon and Valencia, with Flanders effectively occupied by his English and Dutch allies and with war pressing Catalonia hard, the Balearic Islands and Sardinia could not sustain Charles’s war effort. -

LAH 6934: Colonial Spanish America Ida Altman T 8-10 (3-6 p.m.), Keene-Flint 13 Office: Grinter Rm. 339 Email: [email protected] Hours: Th 10-12 The objective of the seminar is to become familiar with trends and topics in the history and historiography of early Spanish America. The field has grown rapidly in recent years, and earlier pioneering work has not been superseded. Our approach will take into account the development of the scholarship and changing emphases in topics, sources and methodology. For each session there are readings for discussion, listed under the weekly topic. These are mostly journal articles or book chapters. You will write short (2-3 pages) response papers on assigned readings as well as introducing them and suggesting questions for discussion. For each week’s topic a number of books are listed. You should become familiar with most of this literature if colonial Spanish America is a field for your qualifying exams. Each student will write two book reviews during the semester, to be chosen from among the books on the syllabus (or you may suggest one). The final paper (12-15 pages in length) is due on the last day of class. If you write a historiographical paper it should focus on the most important work on the topic rather than being bibliographic. You are encouraged to read in Spanish as well as English. For a fairly recent example of a historiographical essay, see R. Douglas Cope, “Indigenous Agency in Colonial Spanish America,” Latin American Research Review 45:1 (2010). You also may write a research paper. -

The former tells me he has been obliged to exchange the beautiful Hanover for the ugly Dortmund, nevertheless in the former place, or rather in Leinhausen, he was but second in command, in Dortmund he is chief of the Royal Locomotive Department. Limpricht’s letter as usual contains much news of interest. He tells me that he is agent for von Soden, at present Governor of Kamerun on the West Coast of Africa, for whom he has many purchases to make, upon which he charges a small commission. Von Soden, it will be remembered, was German Minister in Perú, and rented some apartments in our house at the time Limpricht also resided in Lima. He further tells me that he has been present at the wedding of his niece Martha with Mr. Moeller, Private Teacher of Botany at the University of Greifswald; not less than fifty persons had sat down to the banquet. He also speaks of the abund[_] of money; Hamburg had contracted a loan of 18 million marks without difficulty at 3 per cent annual interest, and the interest on Prussian Consuls had been reduced from 4% to 3 1/2%, in which I much fear I am also interested. He says, finally, a few words regarding the will of the late Daniel Schutte, but, as he only speaks from hearsay, I prefer giving the details which we have learned from Mr. -

This period of epistemic rupture in Spain and her colonies, commonly referred to as the Enlightenment, not only presented new ways of knowing, but inspired impassioned debates among leading intellectuals about the epistemology and philosophy that continued throughout the century.
