The focus will be centered on how it is used in different ways in the different kingdoms (Castile, Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia, Portugal and the Basque Provinces and Navarre) and what the authors are trying to achieve through this. Results show that while Castilian authors try to prove Spanish antiquity with the Tubal settlement, in other kingdom, especially in Catalonia, Portugal and Navarre there is a more regional use of the myth. Most of these authors try to prove that their own kingdom is the territory where Tubal settled, which would give a pre-eminence of antiquity to it in comparison to the other Iberian territories. Introduction Myths have always played an outstanding part in human history and they are without any doubt much older than science. This is also valid for chronicles or historiographical works. Christian historians in particular broke up the division between myth and history, which had been established by classical historiography.1 Only pagan stories remained myths, while the Bible gained the recognition of true history.2 Early Modern chronicles from the Iberian Peninsula are no exception to this phenomenon. -

Michael Torres 1 It is unlikely that any American elementary school student could forget the importance of the year 1492, as it immediately brings to mind explorer Christopher Columbus, his three tiny sailing ships and the daring voyage of discovery to the New World. Of no less importance was what historian Teofilo Ruiz of UCLA has called the Other 1492, the completion of the Reconquista (Reconquest) of the Moorish kingdoms in Iberia, and the expulsion of the Jews from Spain by the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragón, and Queen Isabella of Castile.1 These seemingly unconnected events influenced the history and economy of Spain and Europe, setting in motion the exploration, immigration, and colonization of the Americas which gave rise to Spain‟s Golden Age. -

Christopher Columbus, Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon. • When? By Columbus. sometime before 1485, by Isabella and Ferdinand in April 1492. • Where? In the Alcázar castle, Córdoba. Seeking a sea-road to Asia • Why? • To find a new Route to China and Japan. • The Silk Road had become too dangerous so a new sea route, was needed. Silk Road closed • With the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks in 1453, the land route to Asia became much more difficult and dangerous. • Portuguese navigators tried to find a sea-way to Asia. Columbus was not the first to suggest sailing westward • In 1470, the Florentine astronomer Paolo dal Pozzo Toscanelli suggested to King Alfonso V of Portugal that sailing west would be a quicker way to reach the Spice Islands (East Indies), Cathay (China) and Cipangu (Japan) than finding a way around Africa. • Alfonso rejected his proposal. Inspired by a legend? • As a young seaman, Columbus travelled extensively on the maritime trade routes in the Mediterranean Sea and possibly to Iceland. • Some historians suggest that while there he heard about Leif Erikson. • There are myths that the Viking established a colony, called Vinland, on the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, 500years earlier. • Statue of Leif near the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul. Approach to King João of Portugal • In 1485, Columbus presented his plans to João(John) II, King of Portugal. • He proposed that the king equip three sturdy ships and grant Columbus one year's time to sail out into the Atlantic, search for a western route to the Orient, and return. -

Golden Age Spain Second edition By Henry Kamen  Chapter 2 Absolute Monarchy Was there an ‘absolute’ monarchy in Early Modern Spain? What were the ‘crown’, the ‘monarchy’ and the ‘state’? How did the crown enforce its authority? Modifying state power: provincial and urban authority. How did the crown pay its way? Was there opposition to and popular protest against the government? 1 Between 1450 and 1714 Spain underwent a more extensive political evolution than probably any other west European state of its time. In the late fifteenth century the Spanish realms (one of them Muslim) were a confused collection of jurisdictions with wholly separate identities; by the early eighteenth century there remained only one authority, the crown of ‘Spain’. Though the transformation appeared to be fundamental, it left untouched basic elements of society, culture and religion that continued to preserve their character without much change over subsequent centuries. Was there an ‘absolute’ monarchy in Early Modern Spain? Traditionally, historians pointed to the growth of royal authority as the most notable political fact, but later studies have looked more closely at what this really involved [9]. After the anarchy of the civil wars in Castile and Catalonia in the late fifteenth century, the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella (1474–1516) seemed to initiate the birth of a modern state. The rulers presided over the union of their crowns, the defeat of the Muslims of Granada, the expulsion of the Jews, the discovery of the New World, and the beginnings of Spanish power in southern Italy, the North African coast and the Atlantic (the Canary Islands). -

1492 RECONSIDERED: RELIGIOUS AND SOCIAL CHANGE IN FIFTEENTH CENTURY ÁVILA by Carolyn Salomons A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland May 2014 © 2014 Carolyn Salomons All Rights Reserved Abstract This dissertation is an assessment of the impact of the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 on the city of Ávila, in northwestern Castile. The expulsion was the culmination of a series of policies set forth by Isabel I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon regarding Jewish-Christian relations. The monarchs invoked these policies in order to bolster the faith and religious praxis of Catholics in the kingdoms, especially those Catholics newly converted from Judaism. My work shows how the implementation of these strategies began to fracture the heretofore relatively convivial relations between the confessional groups residing in Ávila. A key component of the Crown’s policies was the creation of a Jewish quarter in the city, where previously, Jews had lived wherever they chose. This transformation of a previously shared civic place to one demarcated clearly by religious affiliation, i.e. the creation of both Jewish and Christian space, had a visceral impact on how Christians related to their former neighbors, and hostilities between the two communities increased in the closing decades of the fifteenth century. Yet at the same time, Jewish appeals to the Crown for assistance in the face of harassment and persecution were almost always answered positively, with the Crown intervening several times on behalf of their Jewish subjects. This seemingly incongruous attitude reveals a key component in the relationship between the Crown and Jews: the “royal alliance.” My work also details how invoking that alliance came at the expense of the horizontal alliances between Abulense Jews and Christians, and only fostered antagonism between the confessional groups. -

Between 1703 and 1708, the Grand Alliance secured for the Austrian Habsburg archduke Charles –“Charles III” to his supporters in the succession struggle triggered by the death of the last Spanish Habsburg– a substantial chunk of the European Spanish Habsburg empire or Monarchy: Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia and Gibraltar inside Spain, Spanish Flanders, the duchy of Milan, the Balearic Islands and Sardinia, and the kingdom of Naples outside Spain. In fact, Aragon and Valencia were already by 1708 being reconquered by the troops of Philip V following his victory at Almansa, but the other territories represented a substantial composite monarchy which Charles must seek to turn into a viable polity; his –broadly successful– efforts to create an effective central executive for that territorial ensemble between 1706 and 1714, by which time Charles had succeeded (1711) his elder brother Joseph as Holy Roman Emperor, and had removed his Court from Barcelona to Vienna, are the subject of Roberto Quirós’ book. In fact, Quirós focuses on Charles’ efforts to make his rule effective in Milan and Naples. This decision is well judged, since Italy has been relatively neglected by the historiography of the War of the Spanish Succession, as Quirós’s initial historiographical survey demonstrates. In addition, following the loss of Aragon and Valencia, with Flanders effectively occupied by his English and Dutch allies and with war pressing Catalonia hard, the Balearic Islands and Sardinia could not sustain Charles’s war effort. -

2018 V From Her Head to Her Toes: Gender-Bending Regalia in the Tomb of Constance of Aragon, Queen of Hungary and Sicily Christopher Mielke Article: From Her Head to Her Toes: Gender-Bending Regalia in the Tomb of Constance of Aragon, Queen of Hungary and Sicily From Her Head to Her Toes: Gender-Bending Regalia in the Tomb of Constance of Aragon, Queen of Hungary and Sicily Christopher Mielke INDEPENDENT SCHOLAR Abstract: This article re-examines József Deér’s claim that the crown uncovered in the tomb of Constance of Aragon (d. 1222) was originally her husband’s. His argument is based entirely on the shape of the crown itself, and ignores the context of her burial and the other idiosyncrasies of Frederick II’s burial provisions at Palermo Cathedral. By examining the contents of the grave of Constance, and by discussing patterns related to the size of medieval crowns recovered from archaeological context, the evidence indicates that this crown would have originally adorned the buried queen’s head. Rather than identifying it as a ‘male’ crown that found its way into the queen’s sarcophagus as a gift from her husband, this article argues that Constance’s crown is evidence that as a category of analysis, gender is not as simple as it may appear. In fact, medieval crowns often had multiple owners and sometimes a crown could be owned, or even worn, by someone who had a different gender than the original owner. This fact demonstrates the need for a more complex, nuanced interpretation of regalia found in an archaeological context. -

Palenzuela Relations between Portugal and Castile Relations between Portugal and Castile in the Late Middle Ages – 16th centuries Vicente Ángel Álvarez Palenzuela Relations between the Portuguese monarchy and the monarchies of Leon or Castile (the Kingdom of Castile was the historical continuation of the Kingdom of Leon) after the unification of the latter two kingdoms show a profundity, intensity and continuity not to be found among any of the other peninsular kingdoms during the Middle Ages, even though these were also very close. The bond between the two went far beyond merely diplomatic relations. The matrimonial unions between the two were so strong and frequent that it is possible to claim that both kingdoms were ruled by a single dynasty during the entire Middle Ages.1 Despite this, any attempt by one or the other to unify both kingdoms was destined to failure, and more often than not, to harsh confrontation leading to prolonged resentment and suspicions which were difficult to overcome.2 The very close relations are, in my opinion, the result of a common historical, cultural, and mental 1 This claim may seem to be exaggerated. Five of the nine kings of the first Portuguese dynasty had Castilian wives: Alfonso II, Sancho II, Alfonso III, Alfonso IV, and Pedro I (and to some degree the same could be said of Fernando I). Leonor, wife of Duarte, was also Castilian, even if she was considered to be “Aragonese”, and so were the three successive wives of Manuel I. -
