I Think We Should Have a Group Discussion About It
Nyckelord Eurovision Song Contest, Sverige, svenskhet, föreställd gemenskap, lekfull nationalism. Recalling Urban Nature
Recalling Urban Nature - linking city people to ecosystem services Stephan Barthel 1 “During the course on interdisciplinary research methods, the professor went for a walk by the lake with her students. She stopped on a meadow in front of a large Aspen, and asked them-what do you observe? One student quickly responded - leaves are moving. Another one, who tried to outsmart the first, said- wind is moving. The third student long gazed at the tree in silence. Then he talked. -Mind is [co-] moving.” (Modified Zen-story) To Leo and Rosa-Linn 2 Abstract People, society and ecosystems are embedded in social-ecological systems, and societal development ultimately is dependent on the generation of ecosystem services (ES) to sustain it. Many ES are degrading however, reflected for instance in the world wide crisis in the pollinator service. Related to this urgent issue, the objective of this thesis is to investigate how actors and actor groups, as well as their governance context, shape the generation of ES. Focusing on social-ecological features behind management practice, the empirical basis are a number of case studies in Stockholm, Sweden, including allotment areas, cemeteries, city parks, as well as a large urban national park. The thesis uses a theoretical lens of complex adaptive systems theory and resilience thinking for the interdisciplinary approach. Methods include ecological inventories of birds and bees and studies of maps, field observations, questionnaires, deep interviews, literature analysis, as well as synthesis writing. It consists of four papers, where results suggest new issues explored in subsequent papers. Paper I shows that the urban landscape owes it’s current flow of ES to co-evolutionary processes and that green governance with the aim of sustaining such ES must take into account historical property and management rights and the involvement of a diversity of actor groups, as well as ecological processes of the larger landscape. -

This volume fills this gap through an in-depth comparative analysis of Pride Parades that uncovers the polyvocal manifestations of LGBT communities in different countries and periods. A brilliant contribution! Donatella della Porta, Director of Centre of Social Movements Studies, Scuola Normale Superiore, Italy Pride parades emerged across the globe as routine performances of LGBT collective identity. This book draws on survey and qualitative data to exam- ine parades in seven European countries and Mexico. By exploring who participates and why, how participants are mobilized, and how the parades vary depending on political context, the authors argue that Pride parades are more than celebratory performances. Rather, they are highly political, challenging not only gender and cultural norms but also larger political conditions. RYSSLAND Klar
Peaceful Or Remilitarizing? a Discourse Analysis of National Identity in Japanese Civics Textbooks from an International Relations Perspective Abstract
Peaceful or Remilitarizing? A Discourse Analysis of National Identity in Japanese Civics Textbooks from an International Relations Perspective Abstract Textbooks used in Japanese schools have long been a controversial issue. This has been the case partly because of a fear that narratives about Japan’s past that whitewash its wartime crimes may enable a remilitarization of the country. Plenty of scholarship has been devoted to the examination of Japanese history textbooks; textbooks teaching civics have not received as much academic scrutiny. While common historical memory is important for common identities, these narratives exist in civics textbooks as well. Furthermore, and perhaps more importantly, not just history, but also civics education has been the focus of debate in Japan, making it as important a research area as history education. While the field is not completely new, most studies done on civics textbooks have focused on the curriculum itself rather than on the national identities or discourses that they produce and reproduce. Furthermore, those that have focused on identities have tended to use quantitative analysis and stopped short of discussing what the discovered identity constructions mean for Japan’s international relations. In this study, using discourse analysis I aim to understand how Japanese identity has been constructed in civics textbooks used in Japanese junior high schools that were released in 1990, and in 2012 respectively. Furthermore, my theoretical framework being a version of International Relations (IR) -
