Contest Page 2 of 82 Foreword Jerusalem 1979 – My first Eurovision memory. Aged just 8 what sticks most in my mind were the postcards. Each featured 4 Israeli mime artists performing scenes representing national imagery of the participating countries. Surreal but strangely memorable. I also remember Milk & Honey winning the title in front of the home audience (they weren’t a 'crowd' in those days). Then I remember victories for Johnny Logan, Bucks Fizz and Nicole. I was transfixed by the voting and songs performed in foreign languages. Unwittingly I had become a ‘fan’. Malmo will be 9 th Eurovision I’ve attended with BBC. I’ve been part of a few UK highs (Jessica Garlick’s 3 rd place in Tallinn, and Jade Ewen’s 5 th place in Moscow). I’ve also witnessed a fair few UK lows. I’m confident this year will be another high. Certainly Bonnie has embraced Eurovision with gusto. She has promoted her song throughout Europe, and has taken to the competition with an infectious energy and a determination to do well. For our part the BBC is supporting her with 4 accomplished backing singers and a team with huge staging, vocal and styling expertise. As ever the UK fans will be out in force giving much welcome support for Bonnie. That support is very much appreciated. For me being UK’s head of delegation is a privilege and an honour. I have the best job in BBC. So whether you’re in Malmo or just watching from home, I hope you enjoy ESC 2013 and ‘Believe in Bonnie’ ! Andrew Cartmell Head of UK delegation ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ESC Insight – Unofficial Guide to the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest Page 3 of 82 Editors Introduction Ewan’s word... Every ten or fifteen years, the Eurovision Song Contest manages to reinvent itself. This process of renewal has kept the show fresh, exciting, and on the cutting edge of entertainment. This year's Eurovision feels like one of those years. Changes have been made at a number of levels, drawing both support from the fans of the Contest, but also raising concerns over the impact they have on the Contest. There's no doubt that a Song Contest approaching its sixtieth birthday will have fans who look back at rosier times, but the length of time in the public conscious doesn't give this year's production team cart blanche to change the Contest beyond recognition. The goal is to leave it in better health than it was when you got it, and you can be sure that everyone involved, from the fans and the TV stations, to the production team and the European Broadcasting Union, will be looking very carefully at the reaction to the changes. In all of this, let's not forget that we do have something very important to do. We have to take thirty-nine songs, put them in a musical arena, and find out which one will be left standing at the end of Saturday night on May 18th. Questions about commercial success to rival Loreen's from last year can wait, trying to work out if the change in the voting system has had an impact will be left to the spreadsheets of June, and working out why Bonnie Tyler performed as she did can be left for the UK tabloids. We've got thirty nine little flawed diamonds, and after all the intense inspection, interviews, and interrogation, we're going to choose just one of them, just as we have done since 1956. I can't wait. Sharleen’s word... It seems that as the years go on, that Eurovision

  • BULLETIN of the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station
BULLETIN OF THE Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station NuMBER 280 DECEMBER, 1914 SOME IMPORTANT ANIMAL PARASITES AFFECTING OHIO LIVE STOCK DON C. MOTE INTRODUCTION Parasites that infest farm animals cause enormous losses to the livestock interests of Ohio. The exact, or even approximate, ex~ tent of these losses is not known and probably never will be deter~ mmed. However, sufficient information is at hand to show that the damage done by the more common parasites, external and internal, is of great economic consequence as well as of much scientific in~ terest. While the study of this subj ~t at this Station has only begun, it has already shown that the field is an important one, and it is be~ lieved that Ohio stockmen will be interested in acquainting them selves with some facts concerning the more common and im portant parasites that infest Ohio livestock. All who know of the existence of parasites in their flocks and herds are requested to send specimens and complete information concerning them to the Experi ment Station, to aid in this study. This publication is not issued 3JS an exhaustive treatise, but rather, as an introduction to the subject, callmg attention to some of the parasites that are prevalent in the state and suggesting some measures to be taken in combating them. DESIRABILITY OF A KNOWLEDGE OF DISTRIBUTION The importance of a knowledge of the distribution of an animal parasite throughout the state is not generally appreciated. A re view of the history of the hook worm in man, of sheep scab, and of Texas fever in cattle-three of the most widely known diseases due to animal 'Parasites, will indicate how absolutely essenti~ are (23) 24 OHIO EXPERIMENT STATION: BULLETIN 280 the records of distribution.

Celebrating Years of Music A Serenade to Music “We are the music-makers And we are the dreamers of dreams…” (Arthur William Edgar O’Shaughnessy, Ode) The story of BBC Northern Ireland’s involvement in nurturing and broadcasting local musical talent is still in the making. This exhibition provides a revealing glimpse of work in progress at the BBC’s Community Archive in documenting the programmes and personalities who have brought music in all its different forms to life, and looks at how today’s broadcasters are responding to the musical styles and opportunities of a new century. It celebrates BBC NI’s role in supporting musical diversity and creative excellence and reflects changes in fashion, technology and society across 80 years of local broadcasting. “ Let us celebrate the way we were and the way we live now. Much has been achieved since 2BE’s first faltering (and scarcely heard) musical broadcast in 1924. POWER OF MUSIC V The past month in Jewish history and in our calendar has been momentous. We experienced Israel’s 70th anniversary, celebrated in several excellent events in our community, the 51st anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem, and the relocation of the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. In the midst of all this euphoria, what might have escaped your attention is Israel’s winning the prestigious Eurovision song contest on May 12th 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal. That night in our Jewish calendar - the 28th of Iyar, commemorates the reunification of Jerusalem during the Six Day War of 1967. This is the fourth time Israel has won Eurovision, one of the world’s most famous international song contests. The winning song “Toy”, a pop anthem about female independence, was performed by 25 year old Netta Barzilai, accompanied by her signature “chicken dance.” Netta had placed third by the official judges, but won thanks to tele-voters from around the world catapulting her to victory. Hours before the victory, Israeli superstar film actress Gal Gadot had urged her twenty million Instagram followers to vote for Israel’s entry. Including words like “I’m not your toy you stupid boy...,” it was influenced by the #MeToo movement. The Eurovision contest has often been embroiled in political and religious controversies, although politically tinged songs are unofficially disallowed.
