Love is just like a merry-go-round with all the fun of a fair. One day I'm feeling down on the ground then I'm up in the air. Are you leading me on? Tomorrow will you be gone? I wonder if one day that, you'll say that, you care, If you say you love me madly, I'll gladly, be there, Like a puppet on a string. I may win on the roundabout, then I lose on the swings. In or out, there is never a doubt just who's pulling the strings. I'm all tied up in you, but where's it leading me to? I wonder if one day that, you'll say that, you care, If you say you love me madly, I'll gladly, be there, Like a puppet on a string. Like a puppet on a..... string! Save Your Kisses for Me Though it hurts to go away, it's impossible to stay, But there's one thing I must say before I go. I love you, (I love you) you know. I'll be thinking of you in most everything I do Now the time is movin’ on and I really should be gone, But you keep me hangin’ on for one more smile I love you (I love you) all the while, With your cute little wave will you promise that you'll save your Kisses for me, save all your kisses for me. Bye bye baby bye bye, don't cry honey don't cry. Gonna walk out the door but I'll soon be back for more Kisses for me, save all your kisses for me. So long honey so long, hang on baby hang on. Don't you dare me to stay ‘cos you know I'll have to say- That I've got to work each day and that's why I go away, But I count the seconds till I'm home with you. I love you (I love you) it's true. You're so cute honey, gee, won't you save them up for me? Your Kisses for me, save all your kisses for me. Bye bye baby bye bye, don't cry honey don't cry. Gonna walk out the door but I'll soon be back for more Kisses for me, save all your kisses for me. So long honey so long, hang on baby hang on. Don't you dare me to stay ‘cause you know you’ve got to save your- Kisses for me, save all your kisses for me. Bye bye baby bye bye, don't cry honey don't cry. Won't you save them for me, even though you're only three... Love Shine a Light - Katrina and the Waves Love shine a light in ev’ry corner of my heart, Let the love light carry, let the love light carry. Light up the magic in ev’ry little part, Let our love shine a light in ev’ry corner of our hearts. Love shine a light in every corner of my dreams, Let the love light carry, let the love light carry. Like the mighty river flowing from a stream Let our love shine a light in ev’ry corner of my dreams. And we're all gonna shine a light together. All shine a light to light the way. Brothers and sisters in every little part, Let our love shine a light in ev’ry corner of our hearts. Love shine a light in ev’ry corner of the world, Let the love light carry, let the love light carry. Light up the magic for ev’ry boy and girl, Let our love shine a light in every corner of the world And we're all gonna shine a light together. All shine a light to light the way. Brothers and sisters in every little part, Let our love shine a light in ev’ry corner of our hearts. And we're all gonna shine a light together. All shine a light to light the way. Brothers and sisters in every little part, Let our love shine a light in ev’ry corner of our hearts. (Slower) Shine a light in ev’ry corner of our hearts. Looking High, High, High I once had a love, and oh I loved her very dearly, She told me she loved me so, I thought she spoke sincerely But one day, away, I found that she had flown So off to find that love of mine I set alone. Looking high, high, high, looking low, low, low. Wondering: "Why, why, why did she go, go, go?" For if I, I, I don't find my love, I know I shall die, die, die 'cos I love her so. I journeyed across the sea, I sought her with devotion. Though, where she could really be I'd not the slightest notion. But so bright the light of love within me shone. I knew full well, what e’er befell I must go on Looking high, high, high, looking low, low, low. Wondering: "Why, why, why did she go, go, go?" For if I, I, I don't find my love, I know I shall die, die, die 'cos I love her so. To east over desert sands, to west where grass is greener. I asked in a dozen lands, but none had ever seen her. It was clear, I fear my quest was all in vain. So I departed, sad at heart for home again. Looking high, high, high, looking low, low, low. Wondering: "Why, why, why did she go, go, go?" For if I, I, I don't find my love, I know I shall die, die, die 'cos I love her so. But when I arrived back home all tanned by wind and weather, You sure could have knocked me down with the proverbial feather. She stood there, so fair and sweetly she confessed That she'd been wrong, and all along she'd loved me best. I looked high, high, high, I looked low, low, low. Wondering: "Why, why, why did she go, go, go?" Now that I, I, I have found my love, I know ‘Till I die, die, die I will love her so. Jack in the Box Stop - don't say you'll put me down. Love - don't go away. Drop my feet back on the ground. Open your arms, let me stay. Hold me like you know you should. Don't leave me on the shelf. Like a doll you throw away. So sad and lonely all by myself. I'm just your Jack-in-the-Box you know whenever love knocks I'm gonna bounce up and down on my spring. A toy you start when it stops, I'm just your Jack-in-the-Box, Because for your love I'd do anything. Who just keeps my heart around? Loves to pull the strings? You - and when it's upside down, look at the way that it swings. I can't help the way I feel. It's you and no one else Calls the tune, but all too soon I'm just a doll put back on the shelf. I'm just your Jack-in-the-Box you know whenever love knocks I'm gonna bounce up and down on my spring. A toy you start when it stops, I'm just your Jack-in-the-Box, Because for your love I'd do anything. La la la la la la la... La la la la la la la... La la la la la la la la la la... La la la la la la la... La la la la la la la... La la la la la la la la la la... Hey, hear what I say. You'll find someday that I’ve walked away from you So say I've got to stay. And from today it's love that's gonna break through. I'm just your Jack-in-the-Box you know whenever love knocks I'm gonna bounce up and down on my spring.

Celebrating Years of Music A Serenade to Music “We are the music-makers And we are the dreamers of dreams…” (Arthur William Edgar O’Shaughnessy, Ode) The story of BBC Northern Ireland’s involvement in nurturing and broadcasting local musical talent is still in the making. This exhibition provides a revealing glimpse of work in progress at the BBC’s Community Archive in documenting the programmes and personalities who have brought music in all its different forms to life, and looks at how today’s broadcasters are responding to the musical styles and opportunities of a new century. It celebrates BBC NI’s role in supporting musical diversity and creative excellence and reflects changes in fashion, technology and society across 80 years of local broadcasting. “ Let us celebrate the way we were and the way we live now. Much has been achieved since 2BE’s first faltering (and scarcely heard) musical broadcast in 1924. Innovation has Let us celebrate the ways we will be... been a defining feature of every decade from early radio concerts in regional towns and country halls to the pioneering work of Sean O’Boyle in recording traditional music and Sam Hanna Bell’s 1950s programmes of Belfast’s Let us count the ways to celebrate. street songs. The broadcasts of the BBC Wireless Orchestra and its successors find their contemporary echo in the world-class performances of the Ulster Orchestra and BBC NI’s radio and television schedules continue to Let us celebrate.” reverberate to the diverse sounds of local jazz, traditional and country music, religious services, brass bands, choirs, (Roger McGough - Poems of Celebration) contemporary rock, pop and dance music.

  • Dana Rosemary Scallon. by Philip O’ Callaghan
Dana Rosemary Scallon. By Philip O’ Callaghan. Dana Rosemary Scallon (born Rosemary Brown on 30 August 1951) is better known simply as Dana, an Irish singer and former politician. Her career began when, as an A-level student, she won the 1970 Eurovision Song Contest with \"All Kinds of Everything\", a subsequent worldwide million-seller. Over thirty singles and thirty albums later, Dana's career continues, now also as a leading songwriter and performer of Catholic music – like \"The Rosary\" album, another worldwide million- seller. The singer became a popular pantomime princess – her portrayal of Snow White was so successful it lasted fourteen years, including an extended season in the West End of London. Her talent for charming the children was recognised when she was chosen to star in three Children's Royal Variety Shows. Within two years this surprising newcomer to politics had become an MEP – Connaught-Ulster's first female member of the European Parliament. DUBLIN -- Former Eurovision Song Contest winner Dana Rosemary Scallon has announced she's running to be Ireland's next president. Scallon joins a crowded field of candidates to become Ireland's ceremonial head of state in the Oct. 27 election. Others in the race include former government arts minister Michael D. Higgins and former IRA commander Martin McGuinness. The 60-year-old Scallon is known universally in Ireland by her stage name, Dana, following her 1970 Eurovision win for the ballad "All Kinds of Everything." Scallon is a Catholic conservative and a critic of European Union integration. She ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in 1997, finishing third.

  • Eurovision Song Contest: the Story by Nathaly Schwarm-Bronson
Back Eurovision Song Contest: the Story by Nathaly Schwarm-Bronson In the mid-1950s the members of the European Broadcasting Union set up an ad hoc committee to investigate ways of rallying the countries of Europe round a light entertainment programme. At Monaco in late January 1955 this committee, chaired by Marcel Bezençon, Director General of Swiss Television, came up with the idea of creating a song contest, inspired by the very popular San Remo Festival. The idea was approved by the EBU General Assembly in Rome on 19 October 1955 and it was decided that the first “Eurovision Grand Prix” – so baptized, incidentally, by a British journalist – would take place in spring 1956 at Lugano, Switzerland. The next step was to put together a set of rules to be followed by the participants, of which there were originally ten, although only seven countries were eventually allowed to take part: Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland and West Germany. The other three countries – Austria, Denmark and United Kingdom – registered after the official deadline and were thus disqualified from entering the contest. The rules of the first contest allowed the participants to enter a maximum of two songs each, and it was strongly recommended that the songs be selected at a national final involving the participation of the public, to render the contest as popular as possible. There was no rule on language, each participant being entitled to choose the language in which they wished to perform. There was, however, a rule on the amount of time allowed: three and a half minutes was the maximum for each performance.

Fifty-four years after Germany played host to the second ever Eurovision Song Contest, the musical jamboree comes to Düsseldorf this May. It’s a very different world since ARD staged the show in 1957 with just 10 nations in a small TV studio in Frankfurt. This year, a record 43 countries will take part in the three shows, with a potential audience of 35,000 live in the Esprit Arena. All 10 nations from 1957 will be on show in Germany, but only two of their languages survive. The creaky phone lines that provided the results from the 100 judges have been superseded by state of the art, pan-continental technology that involves all the 125 million viewers watching at home. It’s a very different show indeed. Back in 1957, Lys Assia attempted to defend her Eurovision crown and this year Germany’s Lena will become the third artist taking a crack at the same challenge.

  • The Eurovision Years
THE EUROVISION YEARS The North West’s love affair with the Eurovision Song Contest began in Vienna, Austria, in 1967 when Phil Coulter, with his writing partner Scot Bill Martin, composed Puppet on a String for Sandy Shaw. The song won and the local connection with the contest began. The following year they nearly completed the double when, at the Royal Albert Hall in London, Cliff Richard performed their latest composition Congratulations. Unfortunately, the song came second, but both songs went on to sell millions of records worldwide. In Amsterdam in 1970, a local girl called Rosemary Brown, better known as Dana, won the Eurovision with All Kinds of Everything. The Phil Coulter song was arranged by Phil Coulter and went on to be a number one hit all over Europe. Charlie Sherrard and Josef Locke were two great Irish tenors of their era. Charlie was born and raised in William Street, Sandi Shaw a stone’s throw from Thundering Down, the street where Josef Locke was born and raised as Joseph McLaughlin. Charlie’s son, Sean Sherrard, followed in his father’s footsteps. Sean took the stage name Johnny Logan and in 1980 composer Shay Healey wrote What’s Another Year which Johnny performed in The Hague in the Netherlands. The song went on to win and launched Johnny Logan onto the international music scene. The following year the contest was held in Dublin and the group Sheeba represented Ireland. Local girl Frances Campbell was a member of the all- girl trio. Sheeba came fifth that year, finishing behind Bucks Fizz who won Dana with Making Your Mind Up.

  • Linguistic and Cultural Changes Throughout the History of the Eurovision Song Contest
Linguistic and cultural changes throughout the history of the Eurovision Song Contest Trabajo de Fin de Grado Lenguas Modernas y Traducción Facultad de Filosofía y Letras Written by: Sergio Lucas Rojo Tutored by: Irina Ursachi July 2020 Abstract This paper aims to clarify some of the linguistic problems that have arisen in recent years at the Eurovision Song Contest, one of the most important music events in the world. Through an exhaustive bibliographic review and the individual analysis of a large number of entries, it is concluded that linguistic diversity, an identifying feature of the show in the past, has been reduced by establishing a rule that does not oblige artists to sing in the language of the country they represent. English has taken over the reins of this annual competition, although there is still room for the traditional and the ethnic. The research that has been carried out is intended to serve as a reference for all Eurovision followers who wish to expand their knowledge. It also attempts to clarify concepts such as “linguistic diversity”, “identity” and “culture”, which can be extrapolated to other fields of knowledge. It must be noted that not only have linguistic issues been dealt with, but there are references to all the factors involved in the contest. However, it is those phenomena related to languages that form the backbone of the work. Key words: Eurovision Song Contest, languages, culture, identity, Europe, music. Resumen Este trabajo responde a la necesidad de aclarar algunos problemas lingüísticos que han surgido en los últimos años en el Festival de Eurovisión, uno de los eventos musicales más importantes del mundo.
