Disidencias De Deseo Femenino En Representaciones Literarias Y Culturales Del México Contemporáneo (1989-2015)
DISIDENCIAS DE DESEO FEMENINO EN REPRESENTACIONES LITERARIAS Y CULTURALES DEL MÉXICO CONTEMPORÁNEO (1989-2015) Alejandra Márquez A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy in the Department of Romance Studies (Spanish). Chapel Hill 2018 Approved by: Oswaldo Estrada Rosa Perelmuter Juan Carlos González-Espitia Samuel Amago Robert McKee Irwin © 2018 Alejandra Márquez ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Alejandra Márquez: Disidencia de deseo femenino en representaciones literarias y culturales del México contemporáneo (1989-2015) (Under the direction of Oswaldo Estrada) This study focuses on works depicting same-sex desire among women written after the publication of Amora (1989), considered to be the first lesbian novel in Mexico, in order to examine developments since its publication. By analyzing works by authors such as Artemisa Téllez, Cristina Rivera Garza, Valeria Luiselli, Mónica Lavín, and Criseida Santos Guevara, among others, I unpack how these works challenge the heteronormative, patriarchal society of contemporary Mexico. In the four chapters of this dissertation, I explore topics often overlooked when discussing lesbianism in Mexico’s literary and cultural productions, such as female masculinity, race, class, and social engagement. My theoretical framework draws from a variety of theorists and critics based in Mexico and the U.S., including Jack Halberstam, Walter Mignolo, Gloria Anzaldúa, Marta Lamas, and Francesca Gargallo. This transnational scholarly perspective facilitates a productive discussion that helps to understand the ways in which late 20th and early 21st-century experiences and ideas circulate beyond the boundaries of the nation state. -

Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Rosa Perelmuter Juan Carlos González Espitia Emilio del Valle Escalante Irene Gómez Castellano John Charles Chasteen © 2016 Emily Joy Clark ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Emily Joy Clark: Gambling in the Mid-Nineteenth-Century Latin American Social Imaginary (Under the direction of Rosa Perelmuter) Economic themes appear in many nineteenth-century Latin American narratives, but the representation of gambling and other forms of speculative capitalist commerce, such as investment, trade, and mining, is a largely unexplored area of critical literary analysis. This dissertation examines the depiction of gambling and other games of chance, as well as financially-speculative endeavors, in eight texts from the mid-nineteenth century throughout Hispanic America, including José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi’s El Periquillo Sarniento (1816), Eduardo Gutiérrez’s Juan Moreira (1879), Rosario Orrego’s Alberto el jugador (1860), Teresa González de Fanning’s Regina (1886), Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda’s Sab (1841), Alberto Blest Gana’s Martín Rivas (1862), José Ramón de Betancourt’s Una feria de la caridad en 183… (1841, 1858), and José Milla’s Los Nazarenos (1867). In the four chapters of the dissertation, I analyze four different perspectives on gambling and its repercussions in society as it applies to gender (Chapters 1 and 2), social class (Chapter 3), and the role of the citizen in post-independence Latin American nation states (Chapter 4). -

Rydlówka 24, Kraków Introduction Between 1963 and 1970, as part of its series Elementa ad Fontiun Editiones, the Polish Historical Institute in Rome issued Documenta polonica ex Archivo Generali Hispaniae in Simancas, seven volumes of documents pertinent to the history of Poland edited by Rev. Walerian Meysztowicz.1 The collections in Simancas are not only important for understanding Polish-Spanish relations, but also very effectively illustrate Poland’s foreign policy in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the role the country played in the international arena. In this respect, the Spanish holdings are second only to the Vatican archives. In terms of the quality and quantity of information, not even the holdings of the Vienna archives illuminate Poland’s European politics on such a scale. Meysztowicz was well aware of this, opening his introduction (Introductio) to the first part of the publication with the sentence: “Res gestae Christianitatis sine Archivo Septimacensi cognosci vix possunt.”2 1 Elementa ad Fontium Editiones, vol. -
Ambassadors in Golden-Age Madrid the Court of Philip IV Through Foreign Eyes
Ambassadors in Golden-Age Madrid The Court of Philip IV through Foreign Eyes edited by Jorge Fernández-Santos and José Luis Colomer prologue by John H. Elliott epilogue by Miguel-Ángel Ochoa Brun Nationalism and Transnationalism in the Court of Spain | 13 Prologue: Nationalism and Transnationalism in the Court of Spain John H. Elliott In the summer of 1963 Lord Hailsham, at that time the British Minister for Science, came back from Moscow, where he had been sent as the emissary of the Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan, to take part in negotiations being conducted with the Russians for partial nuclear disarmament. He returned to London with presents for Macmillan from his opposite number, Nikita Kruschev, the Premier of the Soviet Union. These consisted of caviar, crab meat and wine. Macmillan reciprocated with a vase and some Stilton cheese.1 It was one further, and rather banal, episode in the long story of diplomatic gift-giving that is a central theme of this book. Madrid, the seat of the Spanish court since 1561, was a great, and perhaps the greatest, European centre for the exchange of diplomatic gifts during the later sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Effectively the capital of a world- wide monarchy, the Monarquía española, Madrid exercised a gravitational pull over the representatives of the other states of Europe, whether they were en- emies or rivals, allies or satellites of the Spanish crown. At least until the 1640s and 1650s, when Spain’s European hegemony ceased to be taken for granted, the Spanish Habsburg monarchs, Philip II, Philip III and Philip IV, enjoyed a commanding position on the international stage. -

Tack för allt Marie, The Daily Roxette å tusentals beundrares vägnar. A A. Sarper Erokay from Ankara/ Türkiye: How beautiful your heart was, how beautiful your songs were. It is beyond the words to describe my sorrow, yet it was pleasant to share life on world with you in the same time frame. Many of Roxette songs inspired me through life, so many memories both sad and pleasant. May angels brighten your way through joining the universe, rest in peace. Roxette music will echo forever wihtin the hearts, world and in eternity. And you’ll be remembered! A.Frank from Germany: Liebe Marie, dein Tod hat mich zu tiefst traurig gemacht. Ich werde deine Musik immer wieder hören. -

Authorship at the fogones: Gastronomy and the Artist in Post-Transition Spain Alison Heather Atkins Brick, New Jersey Bachelor of Arts, Spanish and Mathematics, Wake Forest University, 2005 Master of Arts, Spanish Literature, University of Virginia, 2007 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Spanish, Italian & Portuguese University of Virginia August, 2013 Randolph Pope David T. Gies Gustavo Pellón Herbert Braun ii © Copyright by Alison Heather Atkins All Rights Reserved August 2013 iii Abstract This dissertation analyzes the representation of food in Spanish novels and cookbooks from the 1980s and 90s, a period in which Spanish cuisine gained an unprecedented level of international visibility and prominence. Using both cookbooks and novels published during the period, my project examines the tension between everyday and stylized food practices in order to explore how each text engages with questions of authorship and artistic creation. The first two chapters focus on cookbooks authored by alta cocina chefs as well as by gastronomic critics who have compiled signature recipes by the chefs. I consider how these texts engage with contemporary theories of authorship and creativity, establishing a complex relationship with the modern notion of author as individual, autonomous, and unique, a kind of genius figure. In Chapter 1, I analyze the ways in which the prologue writers and compilers of two cookbooks of the early 1980s, Carlos Delgado’s Cien recetas magistrales (1981) and the 1982 Grandes maestros de la nueva cocina vasca present the featured chefs as unique and autonomous creators as part of a process of establishing culinary art as a legitimate art form. -
