Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Rosa Perelmuter Juan Carlos González Espitia Emilio del Valle Escalante Irene Gómez Castellano John Charles Chasteen © 2016 Emily Joy Clark ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Emily Joy Clark: Gambling in the Mid-Nineteenth-Century Latin American Social Imaginary (Under the direction of Rosa Perelmuter) Economic themes appear in many nineteenth-century Latin American narratives, but the representation of gambling and other forms of speculative capitalist commerce, such as investment, trade, and mining, is a largely unexplored area of critical literary analysis. This dissertation examines the depiction of gambling and other games of chance, as well as financially-speculative endeavors, in eight texts from the mid-nineteenth century throughout Hispanic America, including José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi’s El Periquillo Sarniento (1816), Eduardo Gutiérrez’s Juan Moreira (1879), Rosario Orrego’s Alberto el jugador (1860), Teresa González de Fanning’s Regina (1886), Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda’s Sab (1841), Alberto Blest Gana’s Martín Rivas (1862), José Ramón de Betancourt’s Una feria de la caridad en 183… (1841, 1858), and José Milla’s Los Nazarenos (1867). In the four chapters of the dissertation, I analyze four different perspectives on gambling and its repercussions in society as it applies to gender (Chapters 1 and 2), social class (Chapter 3), and the role of the citizen in post-independence Latin American nation states (Chapter 4). The fictional portrayal of the gambler and the description of gambling as either a positive or a negative activity for individuals, families, and the general populace tell the reader not only about game-playing and popular culture, but also about gambling’s deeper significance for writers of the nineteenth century with respect to their societies. By examining how gambling and social roles dialogue with one another, I conclude that focusing on the depiction of this chance-based iii activity allows us to confront several aspects of the social imaginary of the time: social inequalities, women’s participation and activism, class mobility through risky economic practices, and the construction of the citizen in nation-building narratives. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Writing a dissertation is a challenging, but rewarding experience, and I was fortunate to receive the support of many colleagues, family members, and friends over the years. Of course, in order for social reformers to take interest in the topic of gambling, it had to be relevant and prevalent in their societies, and indeed it was. Gambling was a pastime that had long been popular in Latin America,

By analyzing works by authors such as Artemisa Téllez, Cristina Rivera Garza, Valeria Luiselli, Mónica Lavín, and Criseida Santos Guevara, among others, I unpack how these works challenge the heteronormative, patriarchal society of contemporary Mexico. In the four chapters of this dissertation, I explore topics often overlooked when discussing lesbianism in Mexico’s literary and cultural productions, such as female masculinity, race, class, and social engagement. My theoretical framework draws from a variety of theorists and critics based in Mexico and the U.S., including Jack Halberstam, Walter Mignolo, Gloria Anzaldúa, Marta Lamas, and Francesca Gargallo. This transnational scholarly perspective facilitates a productive discussion that helps to understand the ways in which late 20th and early 21st-century experiences and ideas circulate beyond the boundaries of the nation state.

Experiences of anti-corruption authorities show that there is a strong need for more operationally-oriented training opportunities.     Clotario Blest (1899-1990), Catholic labour leader in Chile Clotario Blest (1899-1990) (Marcelo Montecino, 1988) Blest, Clotario (1899-1990), Catholic labour leader in Chile, was born on 17 November 1899 at 48 Brasil Street in Santiago de Chile. He was the second of three children of Ricardo Blest Ugarte, an army officer, and Leopoldina Riffo Bustos (d. 1958), a school teacher. Ricardo Blest Ugarte was a first cousin of the writer Alberto Blest Gana, and grandson of the Sligo-born physician William Cunningham Blest (1800-1884), who arrived in Chile in 1823 and founded the first school of medicine in the country. As a child, Clotario Blest, together with his mother, brother and sister, had to survive a difficult life, exacerbated by his father committing suicide at a relatively young age. His eldest brother died in Punta Arenas at the age of twenty-five while on service in the army, and his sister, a nun with the Buen Pastor order, died of tuberculosis in Santiago. The penury of Blest's infancy would strongly influence his life and ideas in the future. Clotario Blest was sent to study at the public school in Almirante Barroso Street and then, with the aid of a scholarship, he entered the Catholic seminary of Los Angeles Custodios in Santiago. This was followed by studies of theology, law and chemistry at the university, together with systematic athletic activity. In 1918, Blest received the first of the minor orders and the following year he was transferred to the seminary of Concepción. However, problems arose with the director, who supported, and demanded his students to support, the political campaigns of the Conservative Party.

La primera publicación de esta obra fué ordenada también por la Universi­ dad de Chile, en un abultado volumen, en 191 i. Con esto queda dicho que la edición que tiene ahora el lector cu sus memos ha sido reducida y simplificada; más aún: ha sido j efundida, para dar a la redacción el nuevo estilo que le corresponde por haberse suprimido cu su mayor parte los docu­ mentos anexos y complementarios que se incluyeron en la ante­ rior para justificar los asertos del autor en todas aquellas mate­ rias que se tocaban por primera vez o que se presentaban en­ ferma diferente a la tradicional. Las reducciones pretenden, todas, en conjunto, aligerar la lectura; el material suprimido puede, sin embargo, ser consultado en la primera edición, que se halla por cierto en todas las bibliotecas públicas.
