The Rise of a Superpower, Foundation of the Russian Empire
Russian History: The Rise of a Superpower, Foundation of the Russian Empire Part II. From the Reinforcement of Tsardom to the Congress of Vienna By Julien Paolantoni Region: Russia and FSU Global Research, March 08, 2018 Theme: History 15 December 2012 Relevant article selected from the GR archive, first published on GR in December 2012 Introduction Part 1 of this series Russian History: From the Early East Slavs to the Grand Duchy of Moscow was aimed at explaining the foundation of the Russian state, by discussing its early influences in the cultural and political fields. As the subject of the present part is to provide insight on how Russia reached the status of superpower, it is necessary to briefly get back to the reign of Ivan III. Although the reign of the tsars started officially with Ivan IV, Ivan III (“Ivan the Great”) played a critical role in the centralization of the Russian state, after having defeated the Mongol army in 1480. Meanwhile, the extension of the Russian land was eased by the death of Casimir IV, the king of Poland, in 1492 and the fact that Casimir’s son, Alexander, was willing to cooperate with the Russians, so he wedded Ivan’s daughter Helena soon after accessing the throne of Lithuania, as an attempt to avoid open conflict with his powerful neighbor. Unfortunately for him, Ivan III’s clear determination to appropriate as much of Lithuania as possible, finally obliged Alexander to wage war against his father-in-law in 1499. It was a complete disaster for Lithuania and in 1503 Alexander eventually purchased peace by ceding to Ivan III Novgorod-Seversky, Chernigov and seventeen other cities. -

161 Chapter VI Incentives for War and the Law of War (1618 – 1648/59) The Holy Roman Empire and the European States System Since the middle of the fifteenth century, the ruling kin group of the Habsburgs had transformed itself into the unofficial imperial dynasty. As a rule, the Electors chose a member of this dynasty when they had to decide about a new emperor, and they had done so since the accession of Frederick III in 1440. Not always was the imperial election an easy and straightforward process, as several rulers might announce their candidacies seeking to win the Electors’ favour. Upon the death of Emperor Maximilian I in 1519, King Francis I of France, King Henry VIII of England and Elector Frederick the Wise of Saxony decided to run against each other and Maximilian’s heir and presumptive successor Charles, who had become King of Aragón in 1516. All candidates were heavyweights. But Charles won the election as had been expected, the Habsburgs solidified their position and gained in prestige with this and each subsequent election that turned one of their members into the imperial office. They succeeded in drawing ever more central competences of the imperial administration into the residential capital of Vienna. In fulfillment of Maximilian’s court orders of 13 December 1497 and 13 February 1498, Vienna was already the home of the Imperial Aulic Council as an adjudicative and arbitrative institution,1 and since 1556, the Imperial War Council was in operation as the highest decision-making institution on military matters for the Empire as a whole.2 Since 1482, the year of the death of Maximilian’s first wife Mary, the Habsburgs ruled over Burgundy, since 1516 over Aragón in the north of the Iberian Peninsula and since 1555 over the united Kingdom of Spain. -

513 the Rise of Michael the Archangel – the Time of Troubles, Part 2, Timelines of Russian History Show the Prominence of the Time of Troubles
#513 The Rise of Michael the Archangel – The Time of Troubles, part 2, Timelines of Russian History show the prominence of The Time of Troubles The period of 1598-1613 is very specifically known as The Time of Troubles. [Some sources might use 1605 as the beginning year of The Time of Troubles, attaching it to the death of Tsar Boris Godunov, rather than the 1598 death of Tsar Theodore I, Ivan the Terrible’s feeble-minded son, and last heir of the Rurik Dynasty.] Before we get to the story of The Time of Troubles, let’s first look at Timelines of Russian History as a comment on the prominence attached by history to The Time of Troubles. Here are #513–Doc 1 and #513–Doc 2, which are general Timelines of Russian History. The specific purpose in drawing our attention to such general timelines is to show that The Time of Troubles was not an obscure event in Russian history, but rather was such a definitive and dramatic period of time that it is usually included in even the most general of Russian timelines, whereas other momentous events might be excluded. Click here for #513–Doc 1 Click here for the Original Source of #513–Doc 1 Click here for #513–Doc 2 Click here for the Original Source of #513–Doc 2 Key Understanding: The Time of Troubles in Russia in the early 1600’s was a part of the fulfillment of Daniel 12:1. The Time of Troubles ended in 1613 with the advent of Mikhail Romanov to the throne of Russia, which birthed the Romanov Dynasty that ended in 1917.
