The departure has also been announced of James Lee (who took over the Commercial Manager’s duties from Angie Payne on 2 July, prior to Angie’s departure from the Club in the first week of September), and this role is now being undertaken by an external consultant, Anthony Williams. Mahrez Bettache is now clear of his suspension, although is intending to scale back his playing involvement to concentrate on team management.

Mahrez has also made several new signings, so we wel- come to the Club Zaid Al-Hussaini, Rúben Martins Dantas Carvalho, Joel Flavien Howard (who briefly played under Cristian Colás last pre-season), and Adam Toubal, as well as adding Youth ‘keeper Armando ‘Mundi’ Shkoza to the senior squad. We will introduce all the newcomers more fully in a future edition, but for now we wish all our new recruits, on and off the field, every success at STFC.

In case you were wondering where our skipper JOEY TAYLOR was for the past couple of games, he was away on international duty! He was in the Montserrat side who contested two CONCACAF Nations League fixtures, alongside two others who’ve played for us in the past, Adrian Clifton and Corrin Brooks-Meade. (Joey’s brother Lyle, himself an ex-Swan, was also in the team for their two games last month, but was not involved this time). On Sunday they went down 2-0 at home to El Salvador, but on Wednesday they gained a hugely creditable 0-0 draw in the Dominican Republic, to virtually ensure they won’t be relegated to League C next time. For a nation of just 5200 people, that’s a remarkable achievement against countries with 6½ and 10½ MILLION inhabitants respectively. We wish them luck in the remaining games on 16 & 19 November.

As mentioned in the last edition, we welcomed Catherine Horne and her daughter Emma to the game on Saturday, to carry out a small act of remembrance for her late father, Jim, who passed away in June. Catherine has asked me to extend her thanks to all at STFC for their support in this difficult year. Jim was our Secretary from 1982-9, and a Life member for the last 30 years of his life. Sad to say, Catherine had to advise us that her mother Avice, had passed away in hospital in Gosport just 12 weeks after her husband, and once again we extend our sympathies to the family. AVICE C. HORNE (1 April 1937 – 8 October 2019): Mrs Horne first got involved in the Club through helping in the boardroom from 1982/3, and the teabar from Sept ’83 until 1987/8. She also helped with the Juniors, and in particular doing registration for the innovative STFC Mini-League, working alongside founder Mick Clarke and his son Bob. She joined the STFC Committee in 1988, serving in 1988/9 as our Reserve Team Secretary (a post which made her one of the first women to enter the Sutton United FC boardroom, for a Suburban League AGM!) Following the resignation of her husband, took over the Secretary’s job in February ’89, serving until summer 1990, and again from 9 Mar to 15 Jul 1991. She was also Match Secretary for season 1990/1. After leaving Staines, she had spells as Secretary at both Hampton FC and Ruislip Manor FC. She assisted Jim with his Middlesex FA duties, but also became Registrations Secretary of the County League in her own right for season

1993/4; after that she was made a Vice-President, which was uplifted to a Life Vice-Presidency thereafter. Avice’s funeral takes place at 1pm on Wednesday 6th November at Christ Church, Stoke Road, Gosport.

TODAYS PROGRAMME

There are now THREE ways in which you can enjoy the STFC official matchday programme! The first is of course the traditional paper copy, which has been thoroughly redesigned by our new consultant Sam ‘Berni’ Bernard, and is printed by Tony Vella at Print Direct Solutions of Langley [www.print-direct. net]. The physical programme is sponsored and promoted by the Staines Town FC Supporters’ Club, so please do your bit to support the Club by purchasing one (a snip at £2) and also by providing any feedback to David Norris, Christine Harberd, or John Blair in the Shop. Meanwhile, Clive Stevens and Jaki Green of JustBeThere.com provide an online version which you can access by visiting and registering at www.justbethere.app, or by pointing your smartphone camera at this (new) QR code to gain immediate access, and/or to download it free of charge. The JBT edition includes additional interactive content, quizzes, Club shop, enhanced graphics, and several other experimental and innovative features (including an audio version for the visually impaired or simply to listen to in bed), and we are proud to be the initial partners of what we hope will become a major player in the world of “e-programmes”. This version is extensively reformatted by Clive, and is optimised for reading on a smartphone or tablet computer while at the game, but works just as well on a PC or tablet. JBT have also uploaded a back catalogue of old programmes, including those previously produced in hard copy, for you to enjoy free of charge. Lastly, STFC’s own online portals allow you to view and download, completely free of charge, an exact replica of the physical edition, which once downloaded, you are authorised to print copies for your use in colour, black & white, or with colour only on the cover sheets as with the physical edition. Don’t forget that in addition to the programme you are looking at right now, which we term “Part 1”, we also have a “Part 2”, available only as a physical document from the Club Shop. This 80 page Handbook is split in two for production reasons, each volume costing £3, of both together for £5. Volume I mainly deals with historical data—a Club history, honours board, past and present names, grounds, managers, and Life Members, and full stats of last season (senior and Academy). Volume II concentrates on the current season, with addresses, fixtures, cup draws, who’s who, statutory info and more. Today’s edition is number 9 – because number 8 was produced (and kindly printed by Dan Norris / Hemisphere Freight) for last Monday’s U18 game v Bracknell which was rained off.

HERTFORD.indd 8 18/10/2019 15:37:26 SWANS TODAYS VISITORS HERTFORD LOCATION AND FORMATION Hertford is the county town of Hertfordshire, with a present population of around 28,000. Three rivers join the Lea at this point, and it flows into the Thames at Bow. It has a small castle (which housed the English Parliament for a while when London was beset by plague in 1563). Notable residents have included musicians Deep Purple and George Ezra, ‘Biggles’ author WE Johns, and Jane Wenham, one of the last convicted witches in England. Eager to avoid being detained, she opted to undergo ‘trials’, but fluffed her recital of The Lord’s Prayer, and was found to have a bottle of ‘magic potion’ under her pillow; however, when accused of flying, the judge pointed out that this was not actually against the law! Although sentenced to death, she was not in fact executed. The club was established in 1901 as Port Vale Rovers, were quickly renamed Hertford FC, and then merged with Hertford United FC to become Hertford Town FC. Two other local sides, Blue Cross FC and Horns FC, were absorbed in 1908. GROUND The original club played at Hartham Park, but in 1908 they moved to the Hertingfordbury Park ground of one of the merging teams, Blue Cross. The original covered terrace dates to 1950, but parts of it were later demolished and rebuilt. The original seated area burnt down in 1946 but was replaced by a 200-seat structure in 1959. Floodlights were added in 1956, and the current capacity is 6500, with 1500 under cover. LEAGUES The Club joined the new Herts County League (Eastern Division) in 1908, and were runners-up in the first season. They remained in this division (with a break for WW1) until 1920, albeit that in 1919/10 it was called the Central Division, finishing 2 nd again in 1914. In the same period, they also played in the east Herts League, winning it in 1913 and ’14. After one season in the Middlesex League, they switched to the in 1921, initially in Division 1. Subse- quent reorganisations saw them as members of Division 1 East in 1928/9, and of a new Division 1 a year later. Their runners-up spot in 1939 saw them elevated to the Premier Division, but that next season was abandoned through war, and they were placed in the Central Division for the resumption in 1945/6, finishing bottom. They were however placed in the next season’s Premier Division, but again finished bottom, and resigned from the league for a season while exiled from their fire-ravaged ground in 1947, before making a return in Division 1 East. This they won in 1950, returning to the Premier, where they were runners-up un 1956 and ’57. In 1959 they joined the Delphian League, and enjoyed immediate success, finishing as runners-up at the first attempt, and champions in each of the next two seasons. They had made a very strong start to the next season, 1962/3, but the league was abandoned due to the big freeze, and replaced by an ‘emergency competition’, in which Hertford were win- ners of the Eastern Division, only to lose a play- off against Western table-toppers Edmonton. They also won the League Cup that year. The next season, Delphian League clubs en masse formed a new Athenian League 2 nd Division (renamed Division 1 a year later), and Hertford consistently finished in the top 7 throughout their nine years of membership, winning exactly 60% of their 268 games, and winning the League Memorial Shield in 1968. They then spent the 1972/3 season in the Eastern Counties League, finishing 3 rd and winning the League Cup, and immediately switched to the new Division 2, along with Staines Town. Although coming 3 rd in their first campaign, they struggled for the next three seasons, after which it was renamed Division 1 and Hertford’s fortuned improved … until coming bottom in 1985 and dropping to Division 2 North. The 1981 reorganisation saw them placed in Division 3, from which they were promoted as runners-up in 1998, only to suffer relegation a year later. They would also appear in Division 1 North for one season (2002/3) following another restructure, but were again relegated after one campaign. In 2006 they moved to the Spartan , spending a total of 10 years in the Premier Division, with the best being the first two and the last two: a runners-up spot in 2017 saw them return to the Isthmian fold, for the first season in Division 1 North and the second and third – rather surprisingly in Div 1 South Central. NATIONAL CUPS Hertford Town first entered the FA Cup in beating Luton amateur in their inaugural tie. Their best run was in 1973/4 when they lost 2-1 at Hillingdon Borough in the 4 th Qualifying Round. Their best FA Trophy showing was to make Round 2 in 1979/80, and they have reached the 3 rd Round of the FA Vase four times. Hertford’s FA Vase involvement dates right back to a 1909 defeat by St Albans City. After falling at the last qualifying round in 1924/5, ‘25/6, ‘33/4, and ‘50/1, they finally reached the 1 st Proper in 1955/6, after eliminating Crown & Manor, Epping T, Tufnell Park Edmonton, Bish- op’s Stortford, and Aylesbury United. They went on to beat Eastbourne Utd before going down 3-0 to Kingstonian in the 2 nd Proper in front of 5000 fans at home. Further 1 st Round appearances came in 1960/1 (v Corinthian-Casuals), and ‘68/9 when they lost to Wealdstone in a FOURTH replay! They reached the last 32 again in ‘73/4, equalling their best run, but lost 1-0 at Highgate United (Birmingham). REGIONAL CUPS A successful 1962/3 season saw them lift the East Anglian Cup, with 3000 people seeing them defeat Boston United 1-0 in the final at home. They have also won the Hertfordshire Charity Shield (1920, ’21, ’36, ’50, ’60, 2015), Herts Senior Cup (1967, ’90), and Herts Charity Cup (1973)

Staines Town’s 15 year wait for a home Trophy victory goes on, after they were eliminated by high-flying Isthmian North opponents Heybridge, in their first match under Mahrez Bettache. Wheatsheaf Park coped well with the wet weather, but it left the surface rather slippery, and both teams deserve credit for some creative football. Staines more than held their own in the first quarter of the game, although Harri- son Chatting went close for the visitors, and Louis Dixon was called upon to save Jack Adlington-Pile’s deflected free kick. At the other end, Malaki Coker almost lit the game up by running onto his own clever flick but could not control his intended volley. Dixon’s fingertips again denied Chatting, and with Dara Dada-Anité firing just wide for Staines, the half ended scoreless.

Adlington-Pile broke the deadlock on 50 minutes, powerfully heading in a cross from the right, and in a dominant spell by the visitors, Odei Martin shot against the upright, and Dixon did well to keep out Elliott Ronto’s effort. A well-worked quick free-kick led to Swifts’ decisive second goal on 79 minutes, Adlington-Pile firing into the far bot- tom corner. Dada-Anité continued to be Staines most dangerous player, but his two late efforts were fractionally off target, as were shots by Scott Walker and Heybridge’s Alex Teniola.
